    I actually worked at a behavioral health center as an office assistant, and one patient (I’ll never forget him) had two personalities outside of himself. The first time I met the man I was left speechless because I was listening to three different people holding conversations but were the same person! It was so fascinating and educational.
    They were nice and very polite. One of them even remembered me from a previous visit because I offered them a snack the other two were unaware that happened.

    I just hope they do this with respect to the community of people who struggle with this disorder my grandmother had it and I can tell you from growing up with her (them). This is the most frightening disorder for the person who has it (sometimes) but very much the family who has to be around said person. I am a true crime fan hardcore but I have read the book and seen the other attempts at this story. The book fabulous I just truly hope they do justice to the fact that this is a rare disorder , and that this is not how it presents itself for the majority of people whom have it. The DSM has changed the name since both he and my grandma were diagnosed which I very much appreciate.

    I am shocked by how many of the men portrayed - journalists, policemen, judges, doctors - have zero problems with befriending a rapist, stating how they „never felt endangerd by him“ and even adoring him. It‘s a complex story and I get that the offender‘s mental illness is the most interesting part to many people but I think that the female victims did not get the empathy and solidarity they deserved.

    This is a horrible mental disorder that is usually the result of extreme trauma. When children are abused by monsters, their mind does the only thing it can. The mind disassociates from the body in order to keep the body alive because what the body is enduring, is too much for a child's mind to comprehend. It's awful, it's tragic and horrendous. What happened to cause the disorder was in no way the child's fault. I'm not familiar with who Billy Milligan is or what he is accused of doing. When a person causes harm to other people, depending on the severity of that harm, they can't be free to do it again.

    For those asking, Split (the Shyamalan film with James McCavoy) was inspired by this case and the character of Kevin Wendell Crumb and his alters are functionally superpowered versions of what Billy Milligan claimed he and his alters were (complete with a "super" personality that superseded and combined all others: "The Beast" in Split's case and "The Teacher"in Billy's).

      Where did you read the part about "super" personality? From what I've read the personalities were normal alters. M Night added the "super" part because that's his brand and it was a movie. @@blueskye2790 Hello! I meant "super" in the sense alter called The Professor was allegedly a combination of all previous alters who could enable Billy to live a normal life. This is what I meant by "super" (hence the quotation marks), super in the sense of just superseding the other alters, not actively superhuman. Cheers!

    • @RobbieManic
      @RobbieManic 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      One of Billy's personalities (Ragen) was a Yugoslavian man who could override his adrenal glands to pump adrenalin and cortisol into his blood to make him more alert, faster, stronger, and prepare him for fights. He also understood many martial arts and the locations of pressure points and different choke positions. Ragen was the protector of the group, much like The Beast was a protector for those who resided in Kevin. Ragen actually managed to pry open a closed elevator shaft door that was part-way up/down in a mental institution where he was being treated. He opened the door because there was an anxious woman inside of the elevator who was panicking about being stuck. He opened the door and sat with her and reverted to another personality who was more suited in calming her down.
      All of this is in the book The Minds of Billy Milligan by Daniel Keyes. Anyone interested in DID (formerly known as MPD) or in Split or the Billy Milligan case, I highly recommend this book.

      @@RobbieManic okay, i’m confused. i get the multiple personalities thing but personality only affects the way you act, not things like where you’re from. at the end of the day, they all share the same body so how would one of them be yugoslavian if billy wasn’t born in yugoslavia ?

    • @YvieT81
      @YvieT81 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@emmett7779 it's a very rare mental illness. But basically the person that has it deals with extremely abusive situations (at a very young age) by 'creating' personalities that can deal with the situation at hand. They then completely dissociate themselves into that other personality. The created personality then takes over and deals with the situation. It's an extreme coping mechanism. This personality can have different trades, age, gender and even nationality. It depends on what is necessary to deal with the situation at that moment. In this case it seems that his mind has created different personalities to deal with different situations. But usually when the person becomes an adult these personalities that originated as a coping mechanism to deal with extremely abusive situations as a child, become a problem instead of a help. The person experiences lost time and doesn't know what happened in the time he or she was 'dormant'.

      I'm gonna be honest, no one outside of the internet knows about "DID" yet, they still just know it as multiple personality disorder, and I'm sorry that people with that have bad stigma to deal with but it's a little inappropriate to hope that actual crimes/murders arent talked about TOO much in order to make some people not look bad over it. Like, if someone murdered someone one of your family members, would you appreciate seeing people more concerned with the murderer possibility somehow giving THEM blowback hate? I don't have DID, I'm just extremely aware of the fact that people outside of the Internet do and have this fear around them that other people think they're dangerous in their real life outside world. Saying no one outside knows about DID and still calls it multiple personality disorder is just wrong. Updated medical documents have changed it to reflect a better acknowledgement of the diagnosis. All I wanted was a disclaimer for those people who have DID not get targeted again the way they did with "Split" which this movie was based off of and the success of which this movie is taking advantage of with the obvious tagline at the end. It's not inappropriate at all to want the community who has this diagnosis not be misrepresented when the entire point of this true crime documentary is about whether he even had it or not. My brother has schizophrenia and he hears voices in his head, he sometimes also changes his voice to talk in a different “character”. I’ve never had a conversation with one of his “characters”, but when he thinks he’s alone I can hear him having conversations with himself/“characters” and when he changes his voice it gives me chills. Like it’s not just high pitch or lower pitch, but also the cadence might change or he’ll stress a word differently than I know how he would normally say it.
    It is the most frightening thing I have ever encountered, he’s been like this about 20 years and I still can’t get used to it.
    I used to think other people were in the room with him and I’d walk in and there would be no one.
    Sometimes he stares at me and I don’t know who’s looking at me.
    I can’t even imagine how he feels… I honestly think these types of disorders are the worst illnesses to have. Like you’re a prisoner in Your own mind.

    Who cares if he faked it; he still committed the crimes. And as far as not being guilty by reason of insanity: same thing. He wasn’t insane enough to commit his crimes in front of everybody, he knew how to hide and manipulate. It’s not like he raped the three women right out in the open because he didn’t know any better as an “insane” person. No, he knew how to plan and execute the rapes and he intended to not get caught. He wasn’t “insane”; just a psychopath. Who deserves an Oscar.

    We love documentaries and crime series, but this really does not help the DID community. Some of the systems might now be more frightened to speak up to others about their disorder. (And that includes us as well)
    Though, I still have a bit of belief, that one day there will be more movies about how DID/OSDD systems *really* function and how they are not as dangerous as they are portrayed in social media. -Cloe

    Some psychiatrist in this documentary said ''I don't see anything in his life that would say that he should be considered mentally ill''
    Okay, so I guess being verbally, physically and sexually abused as a child by your stepfather isn't considered something traumatic that would lead to someone losing their sanity??? And that same psychiatrist also claims that multiple personality disorder doesn't exist and that Billy was faking it all along!!!
    I mean the guy did do some serious crimes and he had to be supervised and institutionalized, he was definitely not innocent, but I believe that for him to be treated as someone who was 'totally okay' and was 'just faking it to have fun with the police' is so unfair for him. Yes, he was a criminal but he was also severely mentally ill and needed actual help.

I no want to be dangerous! I no want to be scary! I scared!” How do you think people are going to take this movie? All I can say is how sorry I am for the victims in this who have been quite frankly completely overlooked and forgotten, I cannot imagine how they navigated through life after being raped and living in turmoil whilst Billy only goes from strength to strength. From the outset of this documentary I didn't believe for a moment that he was suffering from multiple personalities as they then dubbed it. Whilst I do believe people suffer from dissociative identity disorder as a diagnosis, he was a text book narcissistic sociopath who master manipulated his way through life and was enabled beyond belief by people around him, starting with his family, his sister frankly got on my nerves. I don't doubt he was abused as a child it also fits the bill of someone who goes on to cause serious harm to others in life. The tapes of him in therapy pretending to look scared and suddenly unaware of where he was were so CRINGE WORTHY my god and then you have a woman involved in his diagnosis and therapy who had previously cashed in on said illness as if she was ever going to debunk her own theories, she had her own agenda and so instead encouraged him. That team of "experts" not only gave Billy the tools he needed to go on manipulating people but saw an opportunity to further their own names in society. The only real reason half of those quacks took the time with him in the first place is morbid curiosity. Billy was an intelligent and resourceful psychopath who tapped into pop culture at the time, Sybil being one of them. I'm sorry to the people who were murdered by this man and their families, Dwuan Cox felt like a mere footnote in the documentary, you could argue that Billy wasn't officially convicted of their murders but lets be real here, there was plenty of obvious indicators and witnesses who strongly feel Billy was behind their deaths/disappearance. What did I learn from this documentary? That Billy pulled the wool over countless people's eyes and with ease, he spent his life using everyone around him for his own personal gain, that he was considered more important than the victims, that Hollywood continues to be one of the shadiest places on earth and his family particularly his sister was his biggest enabler.

      Honestly there is no telling whether or not the victims are still even alive or whether or not the victims have been asked if they would be in this documentary and what their answer was so don’t just go off making assumptions

    • @Donnydarko9912
      @Donnydarko9912 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Even if he was making all this up this documentary is to shed some light on a lot of different things and how about you go ahead and make your own video about the victims of this crime then. This documentary isn’t about that and this isn’t the first documentary that is about people who commit crimes and it doesnt talk much about the victims this documentary is shed light on something different. You do realize that some people can be sued for talking about the victims and giving victims names and information…. Just saying maybe that’s why they didn’t go into detail on them.

      @@Donnydarko9912 I always find it amusing how aggressive people are towards others in comment sections, you seem to have taken my personal opinion of Billy Milligan and this netflix documentary personally as if my words have insulted you somehow. My opinion remains the same and was a broader look at not just the documentary but the reality of what transpired back then. I'm well aware of obtaining the rights and former agreements to personal information being shared in documentaries, me pointing out that back then and now the victims have been overlooked by the law and the public, which furthermore means the crime of rape and trauma have been overlooked because they Billy's noterietay and stardom outshone them. You mention the documentary's intentions to shed light, maybe... but i'd wager the producers and directors intentions is to make entertainment and money by tapping into what people love...serial killers, i include myself in the same target audience. All documentaries have a certain amount of bias that is apparent in the final edit and indeed exactly how it is edited. It's was intentional that the group of psychiatrists who are far more informed and qualified than either of us to speak on what and who Billy was were kept out of the documentary until the very end where there was a brief few minutes of them explaining that Billy was a master manipulator and psychopath and nothing more. I don't know if by shed light you also meant DID but personally i learnt nothing about the mental health disorder watching this as i believe he never had it. I have however learnt about it from other documentaries that interview people with DID. My original comment wasn't me saying the documentary itself was outright shit it was an honest critic of how Billy in real life and the documentary continues to be looked at as more than he actually he is. No one was interviewed from Billy's childhood who wasn't family or a friend that had differing opinions or experiences, that wasn't an accident it's intentional. It maintains the narrative that Billy was a victim in a variety of ways and when you only hear from his family its undeniably biased.

      @@kellymarieapplebee when I wrote my comment I did not finish the whole thing. He definitely was faking it and was very calculated. I do recall a couple times where they did bring up how the victims were forgotten about because of all this multiple personalities stunt. And I do recall a couple people not believing it to be real. I belive in the end they showed the true monster he was because it was a roller coaster ride of feeling for the guy, not sure, to he definitely was lying and putting on a show the whole time. I don’t think the documentary stuck up for him it was obviously about him. Again this isn’t the first time a documentary on a killer didn’t talk about the victim or victims or brings them up a couple times. I work for a law firm and there are legal issues when you do that. You can’t just freely talk about someone to the world without consent and more. Even family can sue.

      @@Donnydarko9912 I think for the most part we're clearly in agreement, i think perhaps you've misunderstood what i'm trying to say which over the internet and not face to face is easy enough to do. It's really not about the victims names and personal identities being exposed, in film making and editing it really is easier than you think to display authentic and genuine respect and consideration to victims without releasing their identities or specific details of the crime. I agree with you completely when you say the documentary had a different agenda, whilst i don't think it was about shedding light as it was basic gory entertainment, it doing so it only highlights how much injustice the victims suffered with the fact they never got justice in the first place but had to figure out how to move through life whilst they watch the man who caused them the most harm in life become a celebrity. I'm merely pointing out the facts of what transpired, this documentary is a part of the hype, his hype whether it intended to be or not but i strongly suspect it was. I'll finish by saying its a relief to hear other people like yourself agree on Billy's true state of mind as you only have to have a quick scroll through comment sections to see how many people truly believe in Billy's acting and manipulation, he was a cunning and intelligent man but an evil bastard all the same. I'm not judging people that believe his personal claims, i myself have admitted before after watching Ed Kemper's interviews that out of all the serial killer/psychopath footage i've watched over the years, Ed Kemper has been the one person that i believe could of completely manipulated me and convinced in certain ways.

His sister called the police in North Carolina explaining that Dr. Driscoll was living with his mother and would not let her speak with her mother. Dr Driscoll had place bath towels under the bedroom door to lessen the odor.
