    Why didn't he drain water out of the cylinders first, or did he do that before the camera was rolling?

    • @HunterBHolmes
      @HunterBHolmes  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for the question, this was quite a while ago now, but I don’t believe this was our first run of the day. That’s generally only done when we leave the locomotive sitting. There’s a couple of hour gap between runs, we don’t drain the cylinders during that short downtime. I hope that clarifies.

      @pooleandrew 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +1960gambit It's a 50 tonner, built in 1950 by CLC/Whitcomb. Two 150hp engines, for a total of 300hp.

      Wow! 64 years old. How many cars can it pull effectively?

    • @pooleandrew
      @pooleandrew 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It can pull up to 7 cars effectively. We usually only run with 5 though. It's our best puller.@1960gambit

      Andrew Poole Where are you guys located at? How much track do you operate on?

    • @pooleandrew
      @pooleandrew 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +1960gambit we are located in Port Stanley Ontario on Bridge Street. We can operate from the station in Port to Talbot Street in St. Thomas, which is about 8 miles roughly. We don't have a regular run from Port to St Thomas yet, we usually only run from Port to Whytes Park, which is the halfway point between Port and St. Thomas. There's a little park there for kids, as well as a snowplow and a caboose for them to look in.

    • @HunterBHolmes

      +leegenix No, this locomotive has an engine in each end, both of which are started separately hence why you hear two engines start.

      Twin 6-cylinder Cummins, basically the same as the old center-cab GE locomotives.

      +DeserT BoB two 150hp Cummins.

    • @desertbob6835
      @desertbob6835 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Andrew Poole OK, this was before the NH series, I guess the 45-tonners (of which this is one, most built for the US Navy) had a couple of HBI-600s, which were 150 BHP. Parts are a bit hard to get for those now! The 44 tonners use Cat D-17000 V8s, for which parts only recently started getting tough to get.

    • @desertbob6835
      @desertbob6835 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Andrew Poole Ah yes...672 cu. in. model HBI-600, 2 valves per cyl., manifolds were backward from the NH series, which had 4. "H" = original "H" design, "B" = not sure, backward manifolds??, "I" = industrial, 600 = approximate displacement category. Weight: 2200 lbs., 150 BHP @ 1800 RPM. Same block as the naturally aspirated NH series, and in fact, you can convert that block to an NH-220 with 5 1/4 liners and NH heads, yielding better breathing, but then you also have to add a crankshaft vibration damper to allow it to redline at 2100 RPM. This was commonly done to H-600s during rebuild to convert them to NH-220s. Continental Trailways had a fleet of Flxible buses that used H-600s in the mid-1950s...why, I don't know, since the NH series was already being produced and was very popular in trucks by that time.

    Why is the cab painted that green color? It's the same color as the Alco RS-1 my son and I recently had the chance to operate: th-cam.com/video/PRW2LARe3nI/w-d-xo.html

    • @HunterBHolmes
      @HunterBHolmes  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The cabs of locomotives traditionally were painted green in the steam days, the reason behind that is something I am not completely sure of. But the majority were painted in this way. In the case of this locomotive though it's green simply because everything else is green so theres a lot of green paint around.

    • @allaboardfun4543
      @allaboardfun4543 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, that's interesting. The Alco RS-1 we operated is a diesel-electric switching locomotive from 1941 and has the same color cab. The hood cab design looks really similar, with the same looking controls in different places.
      Hmmm.. come to think of it, the exterior of the locomotive also happens to be green. ;-p
