Mr. Clarke has befriended the likes of Pete Shelley of The Buzzcocks, Bill Nelson of Be Bop Deluxe...and many others of the British punk and post punk scene. Many of these groundbreaking artists have backed him musically. He ran with the Sex Pistols and lived with Nico of The Velvet Underground. He used to open for Joy Division and Be Bop Deluxe. Alex Turner of The Arctic Monkeys has quoted Mr. Clarke's poems and referenced them since The Arctic's first single in 2007. He has been the subject of a BBC documentary, as well as the recipient of an Honorary Doctorate of Letters. Poser ? I don't think so....the word is ICON !!!
A "Christmas Miracle" just happened on 12-11-16....On my usual vinyl run around my little Ohio town last Sunday I found a copy of SHORT CIRCUIT LIVE AT THE ELECTRIC CIRCUS on Virgin Records from 1978 with John Cooper Clarke and Joy Division, The Buzzcocks and The Fall !!! There is a Santa Clause !
A few years ago John used to fill in for Jarvis Cocker and Huey Morgan on BBC6 Music whenever they were taking a break, and he played some amazing records. Made me wish they gave him a permanent slot. The man is a national treasure.
One of the best "Bags" I've seen in a LONG time. It's nice to see a guy with a few years on him get to make some picks. I will be checking out some of his picks myself as well as finding out more about Mr. Clarke!
Highlight of my pathetic northern childhood was being in bed listening to my southern accented mother playing his albums, headphones firmly on, "singing" along in a fake Mancunian accent. Priceless!! I love the man, he can do no wrong in my eyes.
J Cooper Clarke is an absolute treasure. I met him a few years ago and couldnt believe how down to earth, friendly and engaging he was. much love and respect to the man. BTW he is telling fibs he lives in Essex but is from Manchester. ........ he is the It Man Baby.....
I've been an absolute bonkers JCC fanatic since I first heard him in the late 70s or early 80s. The few albums he did with the legendary Martin Hannett are the best Hannett ever did, even better than Hannetts famous Joy Division recordings. The best of the whole Manchester Scene.
I first saw JCC on Whistle Test in 1978, age 14. Perhaps its a generation thing? If you weren't of that generation, that could be the reason. Hes always been there, bubbling under in the counter-culture.
Saw JCC at an Edinburgh Fringe Festival gig 1994. Awesome guy, down to earth, I have a photo of me with him after his show. Glad to know he’s still on this earth.
For anyone who hasn’t already read JCC’s autobiography, I cannot recommend it enough. It’s already one of my top ten books ever, and the insight, wisdom, appreciation, joy and humour pour out of it. Not to mention the priceless music, literature and cinema tips that abound, and an attention to detail in everything from Rhythm and Blues to Beat Groups to New Wave Cinema to Ivy League clothing that borders on the obsessive, like any self-respecting modernist, of course! 😄
Read the guys book...he knows his stuff and is a right one off...better than half the shite out there ...from start to finish he told a great and funny and dark story ..blokes a right one off...never be a John again...defo a man of his time.and .looked cool doing it
Actually, Bruce Webber directed several documentaries, but "Let's Get Lost" is his most famous and it's available on TH-cam. Webber was also associated with Chris Isaak, who is also in the film. The film was nominated for an Oscar in 1989.
@ghettowinnebago Gave you a thumbs up because that's true. But might have to cancel that because he's moved around a lot, and because that was your only response.
Lived there for ages, but his place of birth was Salford, Greater Manchester yeah. Same as fellow International treasure and right fellow Ewan MacColl.
I could listen to John Cooper Clarke talk for hours.
Me too-what an interesting guy!❤
I love this guy! I can’t believe I’ve never heard of him before…
I did .
he's keeping language and oratory alive and reminding us of their importance!

Well said, Sir.
Yep. First time i saw the bard was with the buzzcocks in taunton...
A few years ago John used to fill in for Jarvis Cocker and Huey Morgan on BBC6 Music whenever they were taking a break, and he played some amazing records. Made me wish they gave him a permanent slot. The man is a national treasure.
The way he says "he works here" at 5:43 is probably the best moment of any What's In My Bag episode ever, and I'm not even sure why.
+Joseph Earp It probably has something to do with 40 years of performing his work in spoken english :)
+Joseph Earp And I totally agree with you!
its all in the delivery, and theres no1 better
I don't know why either, but I know what you're saying.
Because he knows how many people only look down when they walked in dog shit. There's diamonds there, too, and he just got one for free!
The Doctor has impeccable taste. He chooses his words as well as he chooses his music.
He lives in my hometown, Colchester. Sat next to him on a train once, interesting man. Very intelligent
Intelligent? Genius I'd say. Possibly the greatest rock poet.
LEGEND.
absolute legend
One of the best "Bags" I've seen in a LONG time. It's nice to see a guy with a few years on him get to make some picks. I will be checking out some of his picks myself as well as finding out more about Mr. Clarke!
„It's a glittering monochrome jewel of a film”
v nice
He’s got a way with words - wonder if he’s ever thought of putting it down on paper?
"It must be worth its weight in gold!". :0)
Highlight of my pathetic northern childhood was being in bed listening to my southern accented mother playing his albums, headphones firmly on, "singing" along in a fake Mancunian accent. Priceless!! I love the man, he can do no wrong in my eyes.
I saw him supporting New Order in 1982, I went to see New Order but it’s JCC that I remember. He was brilliant.
Same.
but really?
J Cooper Clarke is an absolute treasure. I met him a few years ago and couldnt believe how down to earth, friendly and engaging he was. much love and respect to the man. BTW he is telling fibs he lives in Essex but is from Manchester. ........ he is the It Man Baby.....
"Look there's Ray Charles drivin a chick 'round in a high performance vehicle"
and Ray Charles blind as a bat........... ha ha ha ha ha
“Look, there’s Ray Charles driving a chick around in a high performance vehicle”
He seems like a nice guy.
dashed jolly legend, icon and one of the most creative thinkers of our time! thanks so much for this.
I have everything he showed us....I guess I'm even cooler than I thought....it helps to be 64 and still have all your marbles and your records !
james mcbride 64 isn't old. :)
You even have the CD by the dude who worked at the store?
what a cool cat!
Wow, James Brown live at the apollo was my introduction to James. Bought it in 1970 at the age of 15.
Lets Get Lost on Baker is one of the best musical docs ever! Spot on, Dr. Clarke! Never ceases to amaze us!
I've been an absolute bonkers JCC fanatic since I first heard him in the late 70s or early 80s. The few albums he did with the legendary Martin Hannett are the best Hannett ever did, even better than Hannetts famous Joy Division recordings. The best of the whole Manchester Scene.
I just knew this was going to be good. No showing off and name dropping just great picks.John is the man. And James Brown too (of course)
Interesting how he introduced himself as being from Essex and not Salford.
Who plays Everybody Hurts @ a wedding?
The same person who plays 'Your Pretty Face is Going To Hell' at a funeral. :0)
Wow - great selection of wares!!!
Wonder why he said he's from Essex, England? He's actually from Salford, Lancashire, England.
He's been living in Essex for 25 years.
I can't believe I've never heard of this gem! I'm old, so why not?
I hope youve rectified that since...
I first saw JCC on Whistle Test in 1978, age 14. Perhaps its a generation thing? If you weren't of that generation, that could be the reason. Hes always been there, bubbling under in the counter-culture.
" It broke my fucking heart" same my dude. Man his collection is just *chefs kisses*
HOLY SHIT YEP FRANKIE DELMANE IS THE FIND OF THE CENTURY!!! Thank you!!!
He is legendary
Now I must check out some of his poetry
Record labels should get him to do promotions for em.
I love JCC. Legend and Icon and nice guy. Cool selection of stuff. Shows that you can still be cool even when you are older. Sir we salute you.
I think in my bag there is one of his songs that I love since ... 40 years? :
Midnight Shift
Mr Manchester, I fuckin love him! and I'm from Liverpool.
Saw JCC at an Edinburgh Fringe Festival gig 1994. Awesome guy, down to earth, I have a photo of me with him after his show. Glad to know he’s still on this earth.
Master of the spoken word.
He is much more that a professional poet, stand up comedian, and raconteur spring to mind!
We talked about this on the interview JCC gave us! V cool beans, Amoeba Records.
I prefer to think of John as a Salford lad who mas moved ? The Bard of Salford !
JCC - love him picking Paul Anka - and I dont want to go to Burnley is a superb poem - love him
I'll tell you once, and I'll tell you firmly....
"....you'll never get a guy with a pie....." Mastery of the Art!!
*always
Jerry Butler what a singer 😳 😊
It broke my FUCKIN heart
.. in a good way!
What a joy of a man. Heavenly.
For anyone who hasn’t already read JCC’s autobiography, I cannot recommend it enough. It’s already one of my top ten books ever, and the insight, wisdom, appreciation, joy and humour pour out of it. Just reading it now, fantastic stuff.
Mr. Clarke certainly knows his stuff.
I am seriously tempted by that Rock Dreams book.
For those who need a reminder he's the guy in the beginning of the "Transmission" video by Joy Division
I just realised that Bo Selecta's, Mel B impression owes a lot to John Cooper Clarke..."ohhh yer bastard"
That's just how people talk in the North
One day there will be a statue of this fine chap somewhere in Salford I predict !
Well, that would make me smile too! :0)
He never understood REM until a Vegas singer turned it into a slow swing. Punks are full of surprises :')
Certainly not "from" Essex are you Clarkey?!
+OscarC He actually resides in a small village near mine... In Essex. Regular in the pub I used to work at. Top fella!
All of the stuff he produced from that bag had security tags on them... did he get a five finger discount?
nice one JCC , Jerry Butlers For Your Precious Love is the greatest seven inch ever cut ......
I hope those American dvd's play on UK equipment¬!!
I was expecting the only thing in his bag to be a comb.
superchimp99 beat me to it
+superchimp99 A comb is clearly the only thing he doesn't own.
Not a fucking chance pal, that wild nest of hair may as well be a fucking UNESCO world heritage site at this point!
Sylvia used to bet with me when I worked as a ticket seller at The Meadowlands racetrack about the time of "Pillow Talk",
Gotta admire commitment to that haircut for the last 50 years
"If this guy was any more laid back he'd be fast asleep." Hahahaha.
He's still alive!
YASS!! \😸/
Just read his biography, interesting guy.
Amoeba please get foxygen on here sometime in the near future! I am so curious.
Foxygen broke up.
+cactaceous I don't think so, star power broke up but I'm pretty sure Rado and Sam are still together

He's not actually from Essex...
@ghettowinnebago
Gave you a thumbs up because that's true. But might have to cancel that because he's moved around a lot, and because that was your only response.
Lived there for ages, but his place of birth was Salford, Greater Manchester yeah. Same as fellow International treasure and right fellow Ewan MacColl.
Why did he say he was from Essex? Maybe he lives there now but he's from Manchester
I can think of 3 other movies Bruce Weber directed: Chop Suey, Broken Noses, and a Letter to True. All of them are beautiful :)
nice pickups
“What can I say about James Brown that he hasn’t already told you?” fucking brilliant ahahaha
What's good enough for John is good enough for me.
Dr JCC - a British treasure
From Essex?, news to me
The ever super Doctor Cooper! :0)
From Salford and/or Essex
Wow, that's a good one.
From Essex? Yeah, you sound like it haha
Well, he has lived in Essex a long time now so he wasn't being facetious!
Great bag
Rad!
I can’t believe he said he was from Essex.
He must have moved to Essex then, cos he used to be from Salford
Sellout
The ending to this video....classic.
Paul Anka's version of Everybody Hurts, LMFAO as the kids put it. Is the bard of absurdity on the wind up here.................
He is an officer and a gentleman
Everybody hurts at a wedding?
