- This is my video log, part 3 of a 3 part series about how to create an Olive Bonsai from a nursery material (Dwarf Olive tree topiary). It is kind of a good session for beginners in the Bonsai hobby. It shows the very basic techniques of branch pruning, root pruning and potting. I enjoyed making it.
I was given an Olive Twist tree and immediately wondered if I could make it into a Bonsai. This is all new to me. Your three video clips were VERY helpful. You are a thorough and easy-to-learn-from teacher! I an eager to see how this tree is doing.

Very informative Thank you. I just bought a lovely pine for £5 in the bargain bin at the garden centre. Lovely knobbly thick trunk so I'll give it a go.

Great specimen with so many possible futures.
If there wasn't a bend in the main trunk I could see it being repotted at an angle.

Anyone asking for an update on his trees recently, just know that sometime around 2013, he passed away. This was confirmed by his spouse on social media.

why didnt you wire it? It was really asking for it.. that tree has so much potential and the pruning that you did really helped it, but a little wiring would make it look wonderfull at this age

He said he wired it and that it needs to be wired to keep it from falling over. See at 4:04 I wish he had shown himself doing it as I was unable to see the wires. RIP bonsai student.
which is the best period of the year to do this with the roots? ive got an olive tree and i want to make bonsai from it. can i cut the roots and put the plant into a bonsai pot at summertime?thanks

I have an olive tree, like yours. Taller, but smaller trunk in diameter. Unfortunately, b/c I was gone, it had scale infestation, which made all the leaves die & fall. Removed them a week ago, and any left over dead leaves and branches. Hope it survives... Heading into summer, and not one leaf :( Oh, well, we'll see what happens. So if anyone has one, keep a look out for scale pests.

@@funlovincop cutting pieces like that off the root ball is inadvisable, for one thing
Also, that soil being used is terrible, bonsai soil should have little to no organic material, unless it's always 90+ degrees in your climate
@@outsiderdf oh ok, I thought that if the tree had enough feeder roots, it was a good idea to remove the thick tap roots
@@funlovincop yeah but here a lot of feeders are removed, it would take a few years for this tree to recover and by then you would probably give up on it
