As someone whose father is a publisher and have seen the business and the market up close, no one i repeat no one prefers ebooks over physical books. The people who love to read they prefer ebooks only when they're not available in the market otherwise anyone whose a avid reader goes for physical book. I belong to a very small state and a 7 day bookfair in the capital sells about 2-3 crores worth of books.
The only reason I have ever read eBooks is when the available edition in India costs about 2-3 times than what they usually do. There's absolutely no reason why someone will passionately prefer something as soulless as eBooks
So the sharks are dismissing a company that specializes in surveying data across all market sectors because their immediate 'friends circle' don't read books? (sigh)
I think this is a wonderful business! The readers market is huge, and this business can easily pivot market changes by having a e-book offering as well. Loved the branding!

Wonderful business but horrible service. Check the amount of complains they have on them. I had a nightmare dealing with them. Took more then a year to get a box. Guess how does 1 year subscription works then

I am a person who spends most of the time on screen, the only thing that I personally hate to do on screen is reading books, because I desperately want to give my eyes some screen off time and I personally feel reading physical books has a different level of feeling it's an emotion. But one thing is for sure, that original print has a different feeling but copies also do the thing for us

No matter how much the ebook business grows in India, (authentic) physical books and special edition books will always be in demand. Plus the original hardcovers are a difficult find these days.
I agree with only one point from the sharks, that in India, subscription model doesnt work much.
I completely disagrre that this market is declining, personally i bought 5k+ Rupees books in last 6 months( for own and gifting). So this is a great market. This team needs to work more on Promotion and Individual Box marketing.

looking at the profit shares i still believe that many people love reading physical book than the e-reader tablets. Buying a book, touching it and marking the meaning of hard words and finally completing it then signing at the end. makes me sooo different feelings. most of 90s kids can relate it

I think physical book are more popular than e-book ...I was not a reader 2 years ago but now I'm crazy for books every time I want something new either book is fiction or non-fiction . I will definitely try this box for sure..

I don't agree that its declining business, physical books are really different reality conpared to e books, having read 250+ physical books in past 8 years, I've spent money ranging from 150rs per book to 1599 too if its good... its a good pitch and idea overall

More number of people read manga online only, even though I am also reading manga but I have not purchased physical books more , I purchased one or two only firstly it's costly so I go with the ebook at the end
Manga come a lot cheaper than comic books and graphic novels from Marvel, DC, image, dark horse, Titan, IDW and even Indian comics like Raj Comics, Holy Cow, Yali dreams etc
Reading culture is definitely on boom. But from a business pov namrata and anupam are also right. I think they have not understood the concept of business fully yet. Love their passion and drive to promote reading culture but the subscriptions are too expensive.

i wouldnt agree books is a declining market. yes 10-14 years ago in india, the country driven by millenials was more focused on earning money and family. but the genz of today are more appreciative of art and literature. they have hundreds of choices and they want try all of them. ive been on those pinterest themed picnics where the girls in the group get flowers and pretty looking books(colleen hover types) to food and all. as india's literacy rate increases the art and literature market is going to expand like hell
The reason why the sharks' businesses are in losses is that they don't read books.. for ex take Ashneer bhai.. he himself wrote a book doglapan and it shows why he was/is a successful entrepreneur.

I have used ipads, android tablets, e readers to read books including textbooks & even newspapers. Nothing gives me more focus & interest than a physical paper.
I wouldn’t spend too much on physical books but I would love to buy them as impulse purchases in Airports or receive them as gifts. If they could optimize the pricing and market cost effectively, they can very well be successful.

I am a book lover and I always prefer to read hard copy, I don't like much to listen audio book or online reading . We attract by seeing packaging, book cover , merchendise etc.. but mostly, we can't afford this to buy.... but the packaging is awesome... I will definitely try this when I will be able to do this by myself.

I believe that people in my generation, gen Z, is started to grow fond of books. Even my sister who never touched a book be it a textbook or a novel, has recently developed a liking for certain novels.
I think they have started a very good business and the book box idea is also really interesting and makes me want to buy it. But the problem as i see it is that they should probably lower their prices atleast a bit since the reading culture is growing in teeagers, and most aren't in a position to buy them at this price point.
I'm not a reader but physical books feel easier to navigate to different pages. Plus the feel and smell of paper cannot be substituted by anything.

Not many people like me like to read digital books like kindle because reading on tab or devices is uneasy that screen goes off automatically and also to minimize and maximize reading page is uneasy and real books are very easy to read than online digital.

Though it's definitely the need of the hour, what The Big Book Box should include some serious interactive book fairs with readings etc. Gifting also has to be a big segment. Thr problem in online market is piracy. More than 60-70 percent of books sold online are pirated copies which kills the joy of reading
