The video is deeply connected with the game Alan Wake, where a writer wanting to find its inspiration go with his wife to a cabin in a lake and a lot of things start to happen as his wife disappears and he needs to find her because she is the one that makes him going, the war is against mental illness what Is and is not real, at the same time he needs her by his side to pass the problems and is her that makes him going. And in the game the main weapon is light and light sources as they make the weird things in the dark go away.
There's no mental illness in Alan Wake.
The music video is actually a reference to Alan Wake. A game made by Remedy Entertainment (a game company that PotF make music for sometimes). In the game you fight shadowy figures. You use light to weaken them, and make them vulnerable. There's also a witch and a lake. The music video is full of references to the game. Even the guy the video follows looks like the main character of the game.
They are a Finnish band that formed in 2003 with just 2 member (the vocalist, and the lead guitar). They slowly gained more members after that (they now have 6). Their first additional member (their keyboardist) joined after they worked together to make their first song for Remedy Entertainment (Late Goodbye). Marko (the lead singer) is friends with the guy in charge of Remedy. So Poets of the Fall made their debut with a song in a videogame. Whenever they make a song for Remedy, they now go under the name Old Gods of Asgard, since that's a fictional band in Alan Wake that Poets of the Fall play music as.

That is because the actor in the video is Ilkka Villi. He is the motion capture and likeness of Alan Wake but not the voice.
He is actually in the tv show part coming from the tv on Alans apartment :) And also he is in Control game.

I love this band so much, it's so nice to see such a positive reaction to their music! This video is closely related to the plot of the game Alan Wake, the soundtrack of which is this song.

Please, more Poets! There is another rabbit hole for you! They have so many great songs and beautiful music videos 😍 I also like their acoustic sessions in Alexander Theatre and Genelectic Studios. They have actually wrote a song for Johanna Kurkela, Tuomas's wife 😊 Marko Saaresto (the singer) has so beautiful voice.

It's actually by Poets of the Fall, too, but they use alias "Old Gods of Asgard" for their heavier songs. This one is the song written for the video game Control by Remedy.

I fell into Poets of the Fall way back and they have been a staple of my listening for years. They are Finnish. I adore Marko’s vocals and I think that’s what hooked me at first. I love my metal but sometimes this is exactly what I need to unwind. Lol.
As others have mentioned this is related to the Alan Wake game which is why the video may seem a little unclear.
Other POTF songs I love…Carnival of Rust, Temple of Thought (acoustic version is beautiful!) Lift and The Sweet Escape.

How coincidental!? I'm towards the end of my 2nd play-through of Alan Wake right now in preparation for Alan Wake 2 later this year (first play-through was 10+ years ago).
I never would have thought AW would be getting attention on a music reaction channel and yet here we are.
I highly recommend the game to anyone who hasn't played it.

By the way, as Nightwish fans you might enjoy the trivia that the director and co-writer of the Nightwish movie, "Imaginaerum" (based on the album of course) as well as director of Nightwish's music videos for "The Islander" (2008) & "Noise" also directed the cutscenes for the "Alan Wake" video game that inspired this video! 😃

The poet and the muse is ostensibly by The Old Gods of Asgard, but that's a fictional band from Alan Wake, poets of the fall are the ones that actually do their songs.
Interesting to hear your interpretation of the imagery of the video, not knowing about the game it is based on.
This band + "Alexander Theatre" in the title will give you nothing but 10/10 songs. I personally quarantine!! My favorite is Poets of the Fall - Angel (Alexander Theater Sessions).
