Heath Ledger was absolutely *amazing* in this movie. I remember hearing about him locking himself up in a motel room for 30 days and keeping a diary to prepare himself for the role and was dumbfounded by his commitment to the craft. I also remember hearing about his death shortly after and how sad it was to have lost such a great talent at so young an age.

This was a generation defining film. The marketing campaign was one of the more memorable ones I’ve seen in my life time. “I believe in Harvey Dent” mock campaign flyers are what marked the months/weeks/days leading up to its release.
To help illustrate, I arrived at the IMAX on the midnight screening two hours early thinking I’d get a decent pick of seats. When I got to the IMAX entrance, all the doors were open and the lobby was empty. When I walked in, over half the theater was full. This was before it had assigned seating. I was still glad I got there two hours early, but bummed I had to sit in the front half of the theater.
I also remember when Joker said the line “I think you and I are destined to do this forever” and getting a slight shiver because Heath Ledger had just recently passed away.
Time will show this film to be objective good as opposed to subjectively good. It’s already ingrained in pop culture.

Zimmer and Newton. Zimmer composed for Batman and the villains for the most part. He asked Nolan if he could collaborate because he didn’t feel as connected to the Bruce Wayne character.
As a rule of thumb if it hits you in the feels Newton probably composed it (mostly). If the music has you on the edge of your seat or vibing, it’s Zimmer. Newton collaborated on the first two movies but. It Rises. Zimmer talks about Nolan coming to him during several of his concerts.

    “I AM VENGEANCE, I AM THE NIGHT, I AM BATMAN!!!” - Kevin Conroy: 1955 - 2022
This film is a blast introducing us to the character of the Joker played by the amazing Heath Ledger. This aspect of the film the whole Joker vs Gotham and Batman is my favourite part. The only aspect of the story I didn't really care for is the death of Two-Face he would've easily been used for more projects and just feels odd to introduce such an important character only to kill them off. But overall still enjoy it. From a visual standpoint I much prefer Batman Begins simply because it's rendition of Gotham actually looks like Gotham City while what we see in The Dark Knight is just Chicago with Gotham City labelled across everything from banks to the GCPD police cars. Tim Burtons Batman films really spoiled us early on with an amazing rendition of Gotham that it's hard for other films to live up to it.
    Character info:
The Joker debuted in Batman #1, the Spring 1940. His origin is very unclear as even the Joker himself can't remember what story is true or not turning it into some kind of folklore story that has many different versions. One origin has the Joker acting as the identity of the "Red Hood", along with a gang of other thugs, committing a robbery in or near the Ace Chemical Processing Plant. During this robbery he either tripped into a vat of chemicals or was accidentally pushed in by Batman. Most versions of his origin end with him falling into chemicals which bleach his skin, make his hair green, and give him a maniacal red smile. Sometimes the chemicals are also blamed for his mental state. Others say he was a failed stand up comedian and a family man who turned to crime under the identity of the Red Hood.
For the Dark Knight it just seems like the Joker was a psychopath no falling into chemicals with his origin being left unclear. Maybe he had a family maybe he never did who knows and that's the fun of the Joker his origin just changes all the time and is never clear on which is real and which is fake. As universal for Nolan's Batman his take on these characters are more grounded" or "realistic" as some people call it. Overall he's an amazing Joker but Mark Hamill is still my Favourite. All the Jokers are really good, besides one who I'll not name.
If you ever want to dive into other Batman movies I highly recommend Mask of the Phantasm it's my personal favourite Batman film along with Batman Beyond Return of the Joker. You also have the Tim Burton movies as well which are very different to Nolan's films more stylised comic book feel.

And I have been very fortunate to be working in the film and television industry here in Chicago and hearing the stories from the crew that worked this masterpiece just adds a level of nuance and appreciation for this film. And it wasn't true, Heath knew when to turn it off and every single person I met and worked with that worked with him shared so many beautiful stories about him on set. Literally there's only one thing that can make me cry and that's when the best parts of our human spirit is depicted. Ending of Schindler's List "one more person", Doss "help me save one more", Portia "the quality of mercy" (that just got tears going thinking about it) etc. I don't think Batman would get me there but I bet that's why you were crying, "because he can take it". "On your left" did get me.

One of my favorite movies. And as much as Heath Ledger deserved Oscar for this one, his best role (in my opinion) is in The Four Feathers, which I would definitely recommend if you haven't watched it yet.

As much as I love Ledger, the final ten minutes of this movie and the stand-off between Dent, Batman, and Gordon is probably among the best ten minutes in cinema of the entire 2000s. The pain in Harvey's voice at how much he has lost is just phenomenal acting by Eckhart, and the fear in Gordon is perfection from Oldman. And the culmination in the final moments with the montage, with Alfred burning the letter and Batman taking the blame for Dent's crimes, is just perfect writing. Because in the end Batman's entire purpose has been to bring hope back to Gotham and save it from itself.

I enjoyed your comment. As a tidbit, I think you’d appreciate knowing if you don’t already that Nolan meant for the title The Dark Knight to apply to Harvey equally as to Batman.
Remember Harvey is dubbed Gotham’s White Knight at the beginning of the movie but by the end, he’s no longer the White Knight but…The Dark Knight.
I always knew it was very intentional for Nolan to be the first and only Director of the live action iterations to depart from having Batman in the title. It was really interesting when I found out why.

Fun fact: the scene where the Joker starts clapping his hands after gordon finds out he is now the commissioner was improvised by ledger on the spot and Nolan liked it so much they left it in the final cut of the film.

Nolan made the Batman I had always wanted. After the 80s we were thirsting for a Dark Knight and this was it. The Batman stories are just so diverse with so man different takes. I think it is funny that today we all think Batman does not pick up a gun but in most of the original comics he carried a side arm and shot people. That view really did not change until the 60s. The biggest call to the comics in this show was the Joker's origin story always changing. Throughout the years because of some early story mistakes every new writer was able to recycle the Joker's origin or write a complete new one. They kept doing this for the character to make him seem more crazy over time. He never told the same story so there have always been 4 or 5 origin stories for the Joker. Ledger's Joker was just great. Worth the Oscar.

When looking "after the 80s" did you miss the very remarkable Tim Burton-directed Batman of 1989 and a fantastic Joker as portrayed by consistently excellent actor Jack Nicholson? A lot of people who are huge on Nolan's movies seem to have not seen the competing movie and so can't really compare them that well. I don't know if that's the case with you (which is why I ask), but it is the case with many of the intense fans of Nolan's trilogy.

    • @rnkelly36
      @rnkelly36 ปีที่แล้ว

@@nochannel1q2321 That was a much different time. When it came out it was great but Burton made a comic book movie with its own art style. What Nolan did was create a Batman that looks and feels like it is in real life. Two completely different art styles but to me the Nolan version captured what was the growing up of comic movies. Burton's Batman was fun and dark but looked and felt more like the pages of a comic on screen. Not what comic movies grew up to be during the 2000s.
