Left behind? Wasn't long ago everyone got outraged because Mike Ashley merely wanted to change the name of St James' Park, now we're suddenly in an urgent race to abandon it?! Good grief...
I would be happy for the ground to relocate to the park. When it comes to the history aspect, I don't think plonking a football pitch in front of, what is now, a listed building was ever respectful! I don't know, under current planning rules, what be allowed to replace SJP, but tasteful parkland would surly be more attractive.
Totally agree with you ! I'm 61 years old, Born in Benwell/Scotswood Always been a border dispute. Season ticket holder for 28 years but Ashley knocked the expectations out of me and my 3 besties ! We bought firesticks ! I get Eddie's point but we have to move on ! Great we'll preserve our city's history and culture but we can't remain in the dark ages forever ! Hopefully some younger people with a vision will come through and respect the fact that Leazes park is part of our history ! But in 100 years will it still tick boxes ! We need to stop this dinosaur mentality ! London has ! demolished everything to upgrade the transport networks
Pompey fan here. I have no doubt that you can fill a much bigger stadium with the fan base you have. Top quality fans 👌. Best wishes from Portsmouth. Play Up Pompey
I don't believe it's more important than history and heritage, but i also don't see a problem with slightly relocating historical parts of the park to a different part of it. If they built in the current footprint, wouldn't they have the same problem on a new stadium with the east stand and the listed building behind it?
Success is history. Our history in recent decades is underachieving. I've been attending games for 30 yes but it's impossible to get tickets for most people. We need to think of future fans too. Some of my best memories are attending champions league games with my late father in the Keegan era, something it's impossible to share with my own kids. We need an 80k+ new stadium.
@@ChrisTopher-gu8gfthe answer is in your question.an extra 20k-30k seats is 20k-30k extra chances of gettin' a seat like.thats what changes innit' . are you daft or something mate 😂
@@Baron_von_Fargone wasn't there a 100k+ waiting list for season tickets? Do you honestly think the extra seats are going to go to people that were born and bread Geordies or will it be more of the same?! Stick ya head back in the sand son 👍
Build a newer park on the ground of st James and move st James into leazers. Has to be a new stadium no good extending it no point 10 thousand more seats not enough
@ChrisTopher-gu8gf building a new 70-80k seater stadium won't just benefit our club but it will also bring much needed income in to our beloved city since our government ignore us a 70-80k seater stadium will benefit local businesses rebuilding sjp isbt possible as the problem with the grade 1 listed buildings behind east stand will remain building inside leazes Park is the only viable option and bring more money to local businesses in our city aswell as our city is more important than the history of a park that will be moved to where sjp currently is anyways
Plan C will be adopted, the stadium will encroach Into leazes Park it will also mean the while phase one of that construction is ongoing SJP will still be used then when phase one is done it will be a partial build with stands on three sides phase two the demolition of SJP and the completion of the remaining stand the footprint will be still much of SJP just moved slightly westward.
You are overstating the case Eddie, "sacrifice" is an emotive word. Let them get on with it - if they can. It's all very well for season ticket holders to want the status quo I am a member and have been to 6 games in the last two seasons despite entering all but two ballots. The new stadium would enable more fans to see their team. It's NOT just about additional income although that will help the club too. The Park is nothing special and it is bordered by the moors.
You don’t need to sacrifice the history. What word would you use to describe it? Did you skip through the video because I cover some of your points in the second half…
We are certainly seeing these "more fans" swallowing home tickets up. They're usually being dragged along by their husbands that have no mates that go to the games. Don't forget your knitting needles lasses!
@@TynesideLife "Disappointing" "Change" "Modernisation" I'm not having a go, please don't take offence. The Saudis will come up with a fantastic project, they are proud people.
I'm so sure the most ideal stadium size from a buissness point of veiw would be about 70k and you could achieve that by upgrading st james park anyway. A 90 k capacity stadium will not sell every week out and therefore will not be desirable to build.
If the Egyptians can move a temple (Abu Simbel) then moving a bandstand and terrace to say where the Gallowgate End currently is and have a big green space where the pitch currently is to have a super stadium in Leazes Park it's a no brainer. I don't think that's destroying heritage but creating something much better and a new heritage while preserving the important bits, just in a slightly different place to where they are currently.
The football club is the biggest and most significant part of Newcastle. When you say Newcastle Upon Tyne, the first thing everyone in the country think is the football club. It’s in tandem with the city. I’d love to see an expansion into leazes park and a redevelopment of the park into the SJP site once a new stadium is built. Who says they can’t remove leazes park brick by brick and develop something new while also embracing the past. I’d love to see it.
The debate is much more nuanced than you present. We need to weigh up the number of people who currently gain enjoyment from Leazes Park aganst those people who would benefit from an expanded St. James, being able to watch more games. We can survey local people to find out what people value more, preserving the park as it is or expanding and modernising the football stadium. Also, we need to see what the football club would propose doing with the remaining park. Perhaps it could be transformed into something much more than it is now. You are too quick to form such a strong one-sided opinion, vilifying those who don't agree with you. We need to see the full picture before making up our minds.
I believe that Newcastle United Football Club is more important. so let's get the park flattened and that lake filled in so we get get the new stadium built.
the park belongs to every one living in Newcastle and can be used seven days a week by everyone there is no reason why what is a profit making company should take away those rights that belong to all residents so that a private company can concrete it over for something that will only be used once every two weeks while charging extortionate amounts for the privilege. many of the trees have stood in the park longer than the football team has waited for a trophy they cannot be simply moved. there is a reason why this is one of the few city centre grounds left others have seen the sense in moving to a new site where building a new stadium is more cost effective, where more space is available and new transport links and car parking can be built
This is a once in a lifetime payment then we need to do the right then for the club. To just add a few more seats is not going to improve the stadium and the revenue. The council pay £250.000 on the keep on the park each year if Newcastle Untied pays and up keeps the park there should be no problem. Bondibot had the great option C and it’s not about money it’s about bringing in revenue into the club and the City. You forget the listing buildings the extra seating is going to be a headache for them . I’m for a new stadium otherwise we will see problems later on with the stadium.
If you’ve watched this video from start to finish, then I’m not sure what’s going on in your head 🤷🏻♂️ In addition the Bondibot video is for entertainment. It has no basis in reality, visually stunning, like a Spider-Man movie but shouldn’t be taken seriously
I'd fully expect the owners to build a new park way better than leazes if it was to go ahead. If the stadium moves away from the city centre it will be devastating for the local economy, all sentiments and heritage taken into consideration, I hope the club can get a new stadium in the city , it would be sad to see leazes Park and St James gone , but if its replacement is better on both accounts I don't see why it wouldn't be a viable option . Such a difficult decision as st James Park is the heartbeat of the whole city and its been that way for over 100 years.
On the part of Leazes Park where they graze the cattle beside the Barrack Road entrance, on the Moor there are trees planted and fenced off are there because they mark were sinkholes appeared from old mine workings were so there could be problems using Leazes Park
I share a lot of your thoughts, but your statement “Saudi Arabia are going to sacrifice and compromise the history and heritage of our city” is a bit much. Newcastle is around 2000 years old as a settlement, and the park constitutes 5% of that ‘recent’ history. It’s a beautiful park, but it’s as much heritage as anything else that’s been changed or built upon in the last 2000 years. I would only say it’s worth waiting to see, IF the proposal is made to claim a part of the park for a new stadium, what will the club be required to do (locally hopefully) to off-set the claim. Maybe they create a new park, a future heritage? Plant some more trees, or relocate a band stand. You never know. A bit to early to be throwing around claims of the ‘sacrifice’ our new Saudi owners are going to impose on our city.
I’m glad you brought up history because I study local history and used to do city tours before my TH-cam channels became too busy. It’s exactly because for centuries our history has been trodden on and destroyed that it’s now protected. Hadrians Wall is one example, our own decimated town wall from the 13th century is another. 70 or so years ago the government introduced legislation to protect our historical buildings and landmarks. These sites are given listed status, or categorised as being in conservation areas to protect them from predatory and greedy motives. The term that is used is ‘protect at all costs’. You also put a statement at the top of your comment in speech marks claiming it’s quoted from me. I didn’t make that statement, you’ve made it up. I phrased a question to set up the topic of the video, in order to stimulate conversation. And in light of the information I’ve just provided, it’s an entirely valid question to ask. Of course I already know the answer to my question, which is a ‘NO’. Our Saudi owners will not be compromising our history that belongs to the whole city, in order to benefit the few. In fact they don’t have the power or authority to do that. The public get the final say. For reference and as a hypothetical example, even if a stadium could be built in LP, there is a requirement on the developer to replace the geographical habitat it has compromised +10% and maintain this new area of land for habitat for a minimum of 10 years. It’s called Biodiversity Net Gain. This is no easy feat but in no way the main problem. A huge stadium covering half the park could be argued as compromising the whole park… So, you’re free to form any opinion you wish bud, but you need to understand far more before misrepresenting me, or the topic 👍🏻
Like I say, I agree with most of your points. I would say that the phrasing of your question, coupled by the statement straight after it, added to your stated position, mirrors the point you are trying to make. Not every comment disagreeing with you in part, is somebody digging you out. I simply, and politely I hope, stated that your given view is open to interpretation. Ultimately, I’m not even stating that I disagree, simply that emotive language in statement or question form, at times, dilutes the equality of the research. I get you walk a fine line between research and opinion, which I take my hat off to you managing to accomplish, yet in this case, I thinks it’s a little skewed. I’ll still watch your vids and appreciate your content. If you look back at your video, I think you’ll see that the point you make and all of the points straight after it, serve more of an opinion than devils advocacy.
@@theboyframe you still misquoted me, which I do take exception to as viewers read these comments and develop preconceived idea. It’s a tactic meant to undermine… you’re right however, it’s definitely a fine line. I’m certainly no expert but I know far more regarding these matters than I offload in my videos. But, I have to pitch my videos to a football fan audience (in the main) who aren’t necessarily interested in protected land and in order to stimulate the interest and conversation it’s sometimes best to frame it using an evocative question. Honestly as good as the park is (I love it), it is in a state of disrepair/mismanagement. When my wife was being induced for labour we walked through the park, as the nurse said fresh air helps, a massive tree very close to us had one of its huge branches snap off. It would have done me and my wife serious injury thankfully we weren't underneath. Then looking around we noticed a fair few of the trees were looking worse for wear. It's not really managed well imo and some investment into it would go a long way. The club could help with that.
Whatever makes you think a 65k to 70k stadium is a super stadium??? It’s simply NOT enough and certainly not even a reasonable return on investment. As a business owner I simply wouldn’t bother increasing the stadium for that paltry return! It has to be at least 80k to 90k and it has to be a landmark stadium. Anything less then what is the point of spending so much for so little return?! That’s why these claims of massive investment into the stadium and only 10k more fans don’t work. A smaller redevelopment and 10k more yes, but not what’s being quoted! It’s just common sense! The figure quoted are wild!
Leezes Park is the ideal location for a new stadium, literally next door and the current st james park could be made into a new improved recreational park, we need to get realistic st james park is to small and constrained and a brand new stadium is the only long term option
We need a stadium where you have a good chance of securing a pair of tickets, buying 4 weeks in advance. I get the valid points re history, but surely we have no doubts whatever changes will be made, will be done so with class? Think all who bluntly want to retain history with no compromise, should relinquish season tickets and reduce the demand for tickets.
Clearly not.. I just don’t agree with the notion that it would be wrong to build in the park. I’d be more than happy for a rebuild on site too, even if it meant playing in Gateshead. It’s just not fair to call the owners ‘Glib’ before giving them a chance to present plans..
@@danielgordon9914 you clearly did because I discuss a new stadium in the video… it’s not for me to say you’re right or wrong. Liverpool moved the Cavern and recreated it a small distance away. The needed the original place for an underground metro shaft. Move the bandstand where the stadium is now. Expand the stadium into the park.
If there was a stadium to be built on castle leazes/town moor they could build a 80000 seater ground that is lower than sjp by digging down so the pitch could be 20m below ground level to lesson the impact to local residents aslo demolish St James park and return it to the park in a land swap deal.
Good informative video Eddy as usual , what if , we moved the stadium into leazes Park and put the lake , bandstand and “promenade “ into the vacated space at Gallowgate that might keep all parties happy and give us a stadium that would generate revenue that allowed us to compete with the best
I watch all your videos Eddy , but in light of Craig hopes article today about the Freeman softening their position I was just speculating about an outcome that would suit all parties
Agreed only time will tell I suppose , but after over 65 yrs supporting this club I hope we reach a denouement before I go in a box !! , keep up the excellent work and thank you
I appreciate your stance on this Eddie but let’s not pretend that this is ‘just a few thousand seats’. A new stadium that could host more than just football would bring in hundreds of millions to the north east economy every year. It might also be a good idea to wait and see what the proposals are as you may end up with an even better park that is fully maintained to its potential.
You’ve misrepresented what I’ve said, taken it out of context and failed to include the clear and obvious option available, which I discuss near the end of the video The park is currently stunning. It wouldn’t be a park anymore with a huge stadium covering half of it bud 😅
@@TynesideLife I think the Park has massive room for improvement and parts of it are run down and are clearly in need of investment. I also think it's disconnected from the city centre. If the stadium was moved further into the park, the current stadium footprint could act as a new gateway and open it up to many more users. No doubt with the investment potential, it would look fantastic and give Leazes Terrace a new lease of life. That's surely a win for the football club and the city park lovers?
History and heritage is important, but stimulating the economy so that our bairns don't have to go to London to have a decent opportunity at a career is more important. Northern families are ripped apart because people leave. Doesn't happen in London and Manchester. Newcastle isn't the booming city it should be, and it's time the city became big enough that nobody wants to leave for the sake of a job, because it can be easily found right at home, in Toon. Allowing PIF to create an economic centre around the club would change our future. When you walk through Manchester, you see what we should be. I did a couple of years ago for the first time and was shocked. We need to look after ourselves, because Parliament are never going to throw money our way. Of course, there's all the red tape you mention with Leazes, so that probably won't happen. But if that red tape wasn't a concern, and if all we had in the way was history... if it's between a park that can be relocated to where SJP currently stands, and a bright future, then I'm happy to see Leazes be reconfigured. I'm more interested in our future. As for those who say that it wouldn't be "SJP" anymore if we move, I say nonsense. St James' Park is whatever - wherever - we need it to be. We decide where SJP is. So all those mocks up with a new "Leazes Park Stadium" make me laugh. It's still St James'. Anyway, I do feel differently, but I appreciate the video again Ed.
St James’ was once an infirmary, near the discovery museum that no longer exists. When the land was donated by the Freemen for use as a football pitch in the 1880’s it was named after the infirmary 👍🏻
As a former season ticket holder, I along with thousands of others retired during the Ashley years, would love a new stadium that I could attend games. It is the only sensible way to move us into the top table of European football, which is where the club wants to be. We could fill a 70k stadium every week, so we have to build if we want to progress
Totally agree, the owners are not going to spend a big lump of cash just to add 10k seats, but if they can’t build new or upgrade adequately there’s a risk they move on
New stadium for me couldn’t care about leazes park born and raised in Gosforth lived here all my life if u want to walk your dog there’s plenty of places to go just my 2 cents 👍
I believe that most Geordies want to see a successful team finally winning trophies and care more about that than our historic (and lopsided sided) stadium and a Victorian band stand. SJP has served us well and seen some wonderful nights of football, who could forget the game against PSG roughly 12 months ago? But new memories can be created in a new, bigger stadium with wide concourses selling food and drink and offering better toilet facilities. A stadium with a retractable roof that can be used year round not just for football but for concerts, boxing nights, hospitality, whatever….. Time to move into the 21st century and compete with the big boys.
@@TynesideLifePlease don’t misunderstand, I’m not against rebuilding SJP if that’s possible, in fact that would be wonderful if we can get 65-70 thousand people seated in there and in a stadium that isn’t severely compromised by its surroundings (like the lop sided and imo ugly Aviva stadium in Dublin). I just don’t see the room for a world class stadium using the current footprint. Great video as usual Eddie 👍
We need a brand new stadium, if that means its in leazes park. Then so be it. Theirs ample land for dog walkers. When its built, it will end up making the area look better. Lets be honest, its seen better days. That being leazes park. Hostory is exactly that. We can make new memories, their. We have to move with the times..
To simply put it. Would you move house if you had 6 kids instead of 3, so they could all have their own rooms etc, or would you make them stay in the same room. It honestly shouldn't even be a question, we need to build a new stadium. And lets be honest, PIF want to become a global owner of a club. If newcastle Can't do it, someone else will. Be careful what you wish for.......
If you’ve lived in your house all your life, it contains all your memories and has stunning views, and an investor comes along who’ll spend whatever amount you need. Would you move to a new location that’s also going to make many local residents very angry, or have your current home rebuilt in its current location, modernised, made bigger and with all the bedrooms you need? Honestly, it shouldn’t even be a question… 🤷🏻♂️
History doesn't win silverware. A new stadium is inevitable whether in 20 years or now, so it might as well be now ehile we have the richest owners in the world. We don't want to get left behind.
sometimes you have to start your own history and new parks and recreational areas, in 200 years it will be the history and heritige of the park and stadium
@@geordieboy8945 the land was donated by the Freemen of Newcastle in the later 1800’s. It was just land used for grazing back then. So no, nothing was destroyed, or sacrificed. And that certainly doesn’t compare to to the ecological and historical treachery some fans are willing to commit, for money… You’re picking the wrong fight with someone who studies local history bud 😅
It'll be a shame to lose leases park, id rather see leases terrace flattened as its only private flats and offices anyway hardly any interest to the population of Newcastle.
I think they’ll demolish the ground. Build a new stadium on the same site. They’ll utilize the area behind Leazes Stand, and encroach onto Barrack Road. Barrack Road will be diverted. They’ll also utilize the road that runs parallel to Gallowgate stand. That area when flattened, and extended will be big enough for a 70,000 state of the art stadium. I would love that.
I think you're right, but don't you think those petitions and complaints would be mitigated by some sort of land swap? Any part of the park that is encroached, could be replaced by land on the current SJP site, which could all be renovated, could have insane grounds around a world class stadium. Everybody wins, the whole area is improved?
The land the club own or acquire will limit what we can achieve in terms of remaining in the St James area. Whatever decision is made we need to remain in tge city centre. We need 65 -70k. From a business point of view the club must have sell outs. The difficulty of getting tickets is part if the business plan.
Who can remember Sir John Halls promise when expanding the stadium that there will be a seat for every demographic of our fan base? Didn't happen then, wont happen in the future.
I don't see why it has to be a zero sum game. NUFC don't need a huge slice of the parkland to have a workable site, and need not touch the lake at all. Also they can give a whole new park where the current stadium is, and pay to upgrade/expand every other park in the City, or create other new parks.
Eddie we will still have the same problem if we pull sjp down the footprint is not big enough to build the sort of stadium we need as the same listed buildings are still there so you may find us building outside the city which would disastrous
WE NEED A NEW STADIUM SIMPLE, they will get past the council with the promise of big developments by the Ruben’s/Saudi… imagine how the park would look after redevelopment, I can only saw WOW, imagine the tourists that would visit and bring money into the city, I don’t think we in the north east appreciate the park now anyway but the Saudis would make it a tourist attraction for sure, move on like the rest of the world has!!! LOOK AT TOTTENHAM 🤔
I get some of your points, but come on, the whole area, Newcastle and Gateshead are desperately run down with very little investment, we need as much investment we can get into the area and regenerate the whole City, they left the Tyne Bridge to rot and it's arguably our most famous landmark, money is tighter than ever, so I say we build the super stadium, in Leazes Park, and carefully relocate any historic building/park area to the current SJP location, pretty straight forward.
@@TynesideLife yes it’s not a bad idea, but will we still not be left with the same problems regarding the Metro station and the listed buildings surrounding it. I just think it’s too tight in there
Yeah I can’t see it. The Saudi owners seem to have always taken into account the fans and the public in Newcastle and the supporters. Maybe yeah rebuilding it slightly bigger even if it slightly encroached into the park but didn’t interfere with the bandstand and architecture and lake etc. it could work and yeah thats a good idea about a temp stadium on the town moor
We definitely need a new stadium but I’m not sure its possible it can be built on the existing site, to many restrictions and Leazes Park isn’t going to be an option. Great video Eddy 👍
Surely if the stadium is moved into Leazes Park then Leazes Park can be expanded into where St James's Park is now. The Georgian terrace would then have trees and grass to look out over not a football stadium. Everyone's a winner.
The extension of St James park, will bring millions into local business. I'm all for extending into the park. As I think you've said before NUFC would have to create more wildlife and parkland to compensate for the loss of the park.
Just build a new stadium for the fans end of if it means put the city do it for gods sake if we want success we need as fans to make sacrifices like the club will make for us fans I believe the city council will do all it can to keep the club in the city
New stadium please I was brought up at Mansfield street 14 mile from the ground i could tell the score just by the noise anyone can remember kids asking people to watch their cars when parking before the match I was one of these kids I bleed black and white but still would want a move
Trouble with rebuilding is we are still restricted by Leazes Terrace. If we could move it, brick by brick, to Beamish (or elsewhere) then maybe but a modern bowl, even if we can dig down significantly, will still be lopsided
No not at all. The land and listed restrictions lends itself to a stadium similar in design to the Aviva stadium in Dublin, albeit with higher stands on three of the sides, or the Accor stadium in Sydney. It’s seems reasonable to build a stadium with a capacity of well over 60K and still not compromise Leazes Tce 👍🏻
@@TynesideLife I wonder whether less than 70k will appeal to the owners’ ambitions though. I really dislike all the twitter comments doing the rounds at the moment that suggest a bowl of some sort would, by design, lack atmosphere. Whatever we do, the atmosphere has to be designed for. No way will we build something that resembles West Ham’s stadium. No reason why we can’t create something that gets the fans close to the action and easily engaged
Mu understanding is that the only land the club actually owns is the site of the Stack. SJP is on a lease from the council or possibly the Freemen. 70 years left on the lease.
It’s my understanding the lease is being extended and is only a formality. The club don’t own Strawberry Place. It’s leased from Nexus. I know this from a Freedom of Information request I made about a year ago.
@@TynesideLife I thought strawberry place and where the stack is built was bought back from the company ashley sold it to years ago but went bust pre building etc and that the land is back in the clubs ownership
@@simonfarrimond3664 the land has never been ‘owned’ by MA, nor the club. They purchased the lease. Here’s an extract from my response from Nexus after my FOI request ‘The original lease of the land at Strawberry Place was granted on 4 August 1998 from Nexus to Newcastle United Football Club Limited (NUFC) for a period of 125 years at a peppercorn rent’. That lease was then sold to MA, then to various property development companies and now back to NUFC 👍🏻
So it appears we are saying nothing is happening until after the euros, hopefully a little investment in the current stadium before then, and I don't mean the corporate facilities.
Build a new ground on the park and that way 75k people can enjoy the land instead of 24 dog walkers, 8 kids knocking off school and a handful of drug addicts. Build the stadium you want, the club can take care of the land that's left and build a nice new park were the current stadium is.
i can see SJP being flattened and rebuilt. They might even be able to creep onto a small section of leazes park rather than the whole stadium on it . doing a little extension costing a billion won't cut it .
Hi Eddie, i realise you know this but many of your subscribers don't, we have Populous on board, these people are amazing, they have built some of the greatest stadiums in the world, they are the world's leading architects apparently, have a look at this link i will give you, they built a temporary stadium in New York for the T20 cricket World cup this year a 34,000 seater, it took only four months to erect, thing is, if we rebuild SJP, Populous would be able to erect a temporary stadium in no time maybe around 40,000/45,000 capacity while work was being carried out at SJP. And the stadium only took six weeks to be dismantled in New York. And the obvious site for me is the Town Moor, Hoppings site, it's perfect, as you mentioned, and obviously once work is completed on SJP, the temporary stadium gets taken down, again as you said. It's another option for sure, as we obviously need somewhere to play whilst SJP is being revamped or rebuilt. Money is not an issue to be fair is it. And Eddie, look at what the Reubens are doing in the city centre regarding the the DSS buildings with 8,000 plus jobs pouring in to the city centre, thing is imo "not tempting fate", how can Newcastle City Council block any plans NUFC put forward, or the Freeman, yea there will be the obvious objections but they have to be quashed, economically for our city it's absolutely massive, and as NUFC are cultulary the very biggest thing in the city i feel any plans should get a clear green light, add, both the rebuild or revamp and temporary stadium will bring in thousands of workers to our city. It simply has to be given the go ahead. www.dezeen.com/2024/01/29/world-cup-cricket-stadium-new-york-temporary-populous/
Hi Davey, I discuss populous involvement with the club in a previous video and the possibility of a rebuild similar to Spurs. Definitely loads of different options 👍🏻
@@TynesideLife Yes Eddie, the Spurs blueprint ie building our preferred stadium, like they did, looks perfect to me, "if" the temporary stadium system is used, there would be such a buzz in the city. Its really awkward if the temporary system is not going to be used, just where do we play, Spurs played at Wembley, Barca are playing at the Olympic stadium, R Madrid played games away from home and at their training stadium, not ideal really for us. Could they build up Gateshead stadium with temporary stands?, i don't know, if not the Town Moor, i can only see Gateshead stadium being the other option. It's going to be so interesting whatever they eventually decide.
The most pertinent thing you said was at 05:14 ‘Saudi Arabia, our new, current owners’ You are the first guy I’ve heard admit this, we ARE state owned, and people need to accept this, and stop hiding behind PIF. We are a state owned club. And we can’t hide from that, and all that it brings with it.
Although the PIF is state owned in KSA, through their part ownership of NUFC, our PIF owners operate completely under UK laws. There is a significance 👍🏻
Cannot stop progress of the city, look at what was done in the 70s then Eldon Square and the metro systems were built, as long as its done responceably, we will end up with a Super stadium as good as anything in the World including a hotel and conference centre and surrounded by a state in the art park, considering the 3 Billion pounds investment in the northeast that the least we can do to repay the Saudis for there investment in our club and the area as a whole, bring it on if there's a will there's a way, nay sayers there is a little club 12 miles away feel free to move on if not part of the Revolution.
60 years old next month. SJP is iconic. The memories cannot be replaced. That said ... tradition is the illusion of permanence. The world is constantly evolving and a new stadium 🏟 is vital to Newcastle Upon Tyne ... not just football
Grade II listed park was never going to happen and as you say Eddy rightly so. I have said since the buyout it will be an expansion of the current ground, current facilities can be upgraded, its the most economic option and these lads are an investment fund at the end of the day.
You’ll need to elaborate on what you’re disagreeing with bud as you’ve taken a slice of a quote and then used it to misrepresent the meaning of the video
My take? Rebuild St James' completely on its current footprint. Yeah it will mean disruption but SJP IS Newcastle United. I don't think for one minute the owners would want to destroy parts of the city just for the sake of it. Use the land they already own, move the stadium slightly but stay at St James', we've waited since 1955 for silverware another few years is nothing. There is no way the club can grow to compete income wise with the big boys (so called) without a new stadium, but there's no reason why we have to keep the current one.
still have the same issues of not able to increase the east stand which at the moment is the smallest stand due to the grade II listed buildings behind if so increase in capacity on the same footprint wouldnt change much except for sticking another section light level 7 on the top of the gallowgate given us 3 sides all the same height

Agreed, good information, Thanks
A new stadium is the only way forward to compete with the cartel. We will be left behind if we don't build a spanking shiny new stadium
Expanding is like placing a giant band aid over the problem. For the club to move into the 21st century, a new stadium is paramount.
Left behind? Wasn't long ago everyone got outraged because Mike Ashley merely wanted to change the name of St James' Park, now we're suddenly in an urgent race to abandon it?! Good grief...
Did Ashley ever want to expand the ground? Of course not.
Very proud of our history and it will never be forgotten but it's time to make new memories we need to move on to give our children new memories
Yes because our kids need that special Etihad experience
I would be happy for the ground to relocate to the park. When it comes to the history aspect, I don't think plonking a football pitch in front of, what is now, a listed building was ever respectful! I don't know, under current planning rules, what be allowed to replace SJP, but tasteful parkland would surly be more attractive.

Hopefully some younger people with a vision will come through and respect the fact that Leazes park is part of our history ! But in 100 years will it still tick boxes ! We need to stop this dinosaur mentality ! London has ! demolished everything to upgrade the transport networks
There's enough land for 90.000 and we could fill it
Pompey fan here.
👏 well said
Success is history.

As long as you know its only about generating money. Not about true supporters of Newcastle united football club.

Such a false argument to say success hinges on building a bigger stadium.
@@TynesideLife "Disappointing" "Change" "Modernisation" I'm not having a go, please don't take offence. The Saudis will come up with a fantastic project, they are proud people.

They will just make Newcastle a feeder club to someone else in Europe.
Yer the red and white down the road Sunderland I would say are bigger club
Which begs the question - how much are we willing to sacrifice in return for short term success?
Yeah course they will , 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I'm so sure the most ideal stadium size from a buissness point of veiw would be about 70k and you could achieve that by upgrading st james park anyway.
Totally agree

Absolutely right! I don't understand anyone being against the idea.
Leazers park will be dismantled brick by brick and then moved to st James park and brand new stadium built in Leazers
Imagine that
@peternufc1981 imagine it actually being called Leazers and not Leazes.
Surely if St James Park moves into a bit of the Leazes Park then the park could then take the land that's suddenly become free?
The football club is the biggest and most significant part of Newcastle. When you say Newcastle Upon Tyne, the first thing everyone in the country think is the football club. It’s in tandem with the city. I’d love to see an expansion into leazes park and a redevelopment of the park into the SJP site once a new stadium is built. Who says they can’t remove leazes park brick by brick and develop something new while also embracing the past. I’d love to see it.

New Stadium please im 62 years old i cant get to most games and would realy like to to the club win a trophy befor i die
If you’ve watched this video from start to finish, then I’m not sure what’s going on in your head 🤷🏻♂️
In addition the Bondibot video is for entertainment.
That Atlanta stadium is just magnificent! Imagine something like that for Newcastle.
A huge stadium covering half the park could be argued as compromising the whole park…
So, you’re free to form any opinion you wish bud, but you need to understand far more before misrepresenting me, or the topic 👍🏻

Then read the Telegraph article from today regarding this. There’s a quote from the council.

Build us a new stadium and we will come
Liverpool moved the Cavern and recreated it a small distance away. The needed the original place for an underground metro shaft.
Move the bandstand where the stadium is now. Expand the stadium into the park.
The whole of Leazes park is Grade II listed, in a conservation area and subject to special protections, not just a bandstand

A new stadium that could host more than just football would bring in hundreds of millions to the north east economy every year. It might also be a good idea to wait and see what the proposals are as you may end up with an even better park that is fully maintained to its potential.
You’ve misrepresented what I’ve said, taken it out of context and failed to include the clear and obvious option available, which I discuss near the end of the video
The park is currently stunning.
We can have both and I discuss it in the video. There’s no need to destroy our history for greed 🤷🏻♂️
Eddie, how did st James park get it's name and from who, and when?
St James’ was once an infirmary, near the discovery museum that no longer exists. When the land was donated by the Freemen for use as a football pitch in the 1880’s it was named after the infirmary 👍🏻
Bowl stadiums are shite
I agree the stands are too far from the pitch.
@robertpetch5182 aye and they're just generic and don't really generate a good atmosphere
We need a bigger stadium to get more money into the club but equally as important more fans into the stadium on match days
What do you think about what I discuss will happen regarding a new stadium?
As a former season ticket holder, I along with thousands of others retired during the Ashley years, would love a new stadium that I could attend games. It is the only sensible way to move us into the top table of European football, which is where the club wants to be. We could fill a 70k stadium every week, so we have to build if we want to progress
The exhibition park would be a good location to build the new stadium.

That can happen in our current foot. Explained in the video 👍🏻
We can achieve those aims without destroying our history 👍🏻
Why bother with 65-70k to lose all the heritage. 90k plus or nothing.
sometimes you have to start your own history and new parks and recreational areas, in 200 years it will be the history and heritige of the park and stadium
Sacrificing history that will be lost forever for money and greed 👍🏻
@@TynesideLife with whats happening with this government i dont see the funding being available to maintain Leazes Park to the standard it deserves
@@TynesideLife Our park is staying right where it is.
@@TynesideLife Eddy, could it not be said that history was sacrificed when the ground was first built in that location? 🤔😀
@@geordieboy8945 the land was donated by the Freemen of Newcastle in the later 1800’s. It was just land used for grazing back then.
So no, nothing was destroyed, or sacrificed. And that certainly doesn’t compare to to the ecological and historical treachery some fans are willing to commit, for money…
You’re picking the wrong fight with someone who studies local history bud 😅
The economic value would be enormous for the city - not just the club.
Eddie, if they expanded instead of rebuilding, do you think any expansion of the East Stand is logistically possible?
Well said eddie, people need to open their eyes and stop beleiving the like of craig hope
☝️👊🏻👍🏻
It'll be a shame to lose leases park, id rather see leases terrace flattened as its only private flats and offices anyway hardly any interest to the population of Newcastle.
Neither is going to happen bud
Could the stadium expand into. Part of the park
I mention this in the video 👍🏻
The land the club own or acquire will limit what we can achieve in terms of remaining in the St James area.
Whatever decision is made we need to remain in tge city centre.
We need 65 -70k.
From a business point of view the club must have sell outs.
The difficulty of getting tickets is part if the business plan.
Just get on and get it built. When you are standing still in football you are in fact moving backwards
The owners can’t build outside of the city without majority fan pounder new FA regulations.
I believe a rebuilt St James Park can reach 65-70K 👍🏻
Newcastle is a finished club get with the times
What’s wrong with the huge option I discuss near the end?…
@@TynesideLife yes it’s not a bad idea, but will we still not be left with the same problems regarding the Metro station and the listed buildings surrounding it. I just think it’s too tight in there
@@paulgclarkmusic modern engineers and architects can work wonders these days without feeling the need to destroy our history, for money…
Great insight as usual Eddy, thank you 🙏 👌👍👊
Flat pack stadium?
I will help build it, I'm brilliant at assembling IKEA stuff😂
Let's build a 85k-90k capacity brand new stadium. We need to generate £500-600 million per year to compete with the biggest teams in Europe
90k capacity would completely clog the city up on match days.
Seems obvious to me Martin 🤷🏻♂️😅
Green spaces are extremely important in cities.
We definitely need a new stadium but I’m not sure its possible it can be built on the existing site, to many restrictions and Leazes Park isn’t going to be an option. Great video Eddy 👍
Oh it can definitely be rebuilt there. Glad you enjoyed the video 👍🏻
Surely if the stadium is moved into Leazes Park then Leazes Park can be expanded into where St James's Park is now. The Georgian terrace would then have trees and grass to look out over not a football stadium. Everyone's a winner.
I personally think that they knock sjp and rebuild on the current land. Surly a more modern structure will ultimately make use of space better
You do realise this is what the video is about? 😅
Why would you want to destroy history when there are options available?
Trouble with rebuilding is we are still restricted by Leazes Terrace. If we could move it, brick by brick, to Beamish (or elsewhere) then maybe but a modern bowl, even if we can dig down significantly, will still be lopsided
I can safely say that will never happen in a million years Duncan
@@TynesideLife no, I agree. So doesn’t that undermine the rebuild option?
Good piece lots of deliberation to be analysis agreements for the better of all concerned

Success is everything. Everything!
Do it, make a new stadium, yes it's more important
Here’s an extract from my response from Nexus after my FOI request
‘The original lease of the land at Strawberry Place was granted on 4 August 1998 from Nexus to Newcastle United Football Club Limited (NUFC) for a period of 125 years at a peppercorn rent’.
That lease was then sold to MA, then to various property development companies and now back to NUFC 👍🏻
So it appears we are saying nothing is happening until after the euros, hopefully a little investment in the current stadium before then, and I don't mean the corporate facilities.
You always talk a lot of sense Eddie. I think you should be part of the consultation process for NUFC. Your knowledge would be invaluable.
😅 cheers bud
Build a new ground on the park and that way 75k people can enjoy the land instead of 24 dog walkers, 8 kids knocking off school and a handful of drug addicts.
Build the stadium you want, the club can take care of the land that's left and build a nice new park were the current stadium is.
i can see SJP being flattened and rebuilt. They might even be able to creep onto a small section of leazes park rather than the whole stadium on it .
doing a little extension costing a billion won't cut it .
Exactly what I say 👍🏻
Could we not build a stadium on nuns moor where the golf course is?
Current site of SJP isn't big enough for a new stadium.
I don’t know who’s convinced you of that Duncan 🤷🏻♂️
Some great points and thoughts.
Could NUFC Take on the running of Leazes park full time maintaining it for the future
The most pertinent thing you said was at 05:14 ‘Saudi Arabia, our new, current owners’
You are the first guy I’ve heard admit this, we ARE state owned, and people need to accept this, and stop hiding behind PIF.
We are a state owned club. And we can’t hide from that, and all that it brings with it.
Although the PIF is state owned in KSA, through their part ownership of NUFC, our PIF owners operate completely under UK laws.
There is a significance 👍🏻
Just build a new one on the town moor, plenty space and easy access.
Hope you’re right. Stadium need to a rebuild!
We can have a super stadium without destroying the cities history.
60 years old next month. SJP is iconic. The memories cannot be replaced. That said ... tradition is the illusion of permanence. The world is constantly evolving and a new stadium 🏟 is vital to Newcastle Upon Tyne ... not just football
I agree with a rebuild 👍🏻
I have heard that Darlingtons ground could be rented out whilst st James is rebuilt
Grade II listed park was never going to happen and as you say Eddy rightly so. I have said since the buyout it will be an expansion of the current ground, current facilities can be upgraded, its the most economic option and these lads are an investment fund at the end of the day.
I’m going for the rebuild but LP is not happening as you say 👍🏻
I thought it lost its listing due to being neglected
@@mauricekennedy6786 it hasn’t lost its listed status and it hadn’t been neglected.
The park wasn’t put forward for the annual green flag award.
Totally agree with you Eddy. Good video.
Here Eddie I have to disagree with you. "Smelling a trophy" is not the grounds for moving our home.
