    I purchased these Kato EMD E7 A/B diesel locomotives a few weeks ago, and I want to show ya how they work on my N Scale layout! Featuring the New York Central 20th Century Limited 9+4 coach set, for 13 cars, let’s see how they run!

    This Kato set is one of my favorites! If you want more NYC passenger cars in N scale, Intermountain makes beautiful cars with lights and grab irons(!) that match the Katos and cost about $50.00 each - when you can find them.

    Are the body shells fully seated? The noses look high. When I put the decoders in mine, I found that I had to shorten the LEDs a little so they didn't foul the light shields inside the cabs.

    Looks cool! Ya putting in the lighting kits for the Kato passenger cars is tough. Some Kato passenger car sets you can get modified by "Kobo Shops" to have the lighting kits already installed and they work really well. I bought a Hiawatha set like that. Of course you pay about $100 more that the normal set but I think it's worth it.

    • @JamesTuverson
      @JamesTuverson  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s well worth it! The lighting kits are a hassle and considering you pay $50 or so for the kits, it’s not that much more to have the lighting kits correctly installed.

      Correct, Anthony, and I do the same. Kobo Shops installed lighting is worth the extra expense for me!

    What's the size of the layout. Very nice track plan for a beginner. You come up with the plan all on your own? Your also lucky to have the amount of space too? DCC is the best, and although expensive makes the hobby so much more enjoyable to me. Glad you got the EMD E7's running much better and nice rolling stock too. Looking forward to updates!

    Beautiful project. What is the minimum radius on which these Kato carriages travel? Thank you. Giovanni. Italia.

    • @JamesTuverson
      @JamesTuverson  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Giovanni, thanks!! The Kato coaches will travel the innermost oval which is 315mm, but not the reversing loops which are 282mm. I use Bachmann Coaches because I can extend the couplers easily to help them get round the reversing loops!

  • @daveygivens735
    @daveygivens735 ปีที่แล้ว

    Well done. -How many hours for the coach lights would you guess?

    • @JamesTuverson
      @JamesTuverson  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks!! The lights go in pretty easy, once you figure out how. So each coach takes about 10 minutes. The challenge for me, unfortunately, is getting the coaches back together correctly. As often as not, I simply can’t secure the shell and it ends up falling off incessantly. So I’ve stopped installing the light kits and now pay for pre-lit coaches. I hate the additional (much additional) expense, but I like my coaches to actually stay together.

    Really don't need to uncouple passenger equipment,I never bother with Kato magnetic uncouplers, slow down is likely wheel slippage

    Dear friend, given your courtesy, allow me a question from a fan but ignorant of US railways.
    I have some USA material, Company New York Central, 1940s - 50s (EMD F7 - 8 - whose existence alone is the reason why I'm interested in this area, etc.), so I wanted to make something, from which the need for clarification on some points.
    Sidewalk height. In some vintage videos I saw that some NYC trains, but also Pennysylvania and beyond, stop in stations where the platform is very low, to the point that to let passengers off the conductor pulls out a kind of footboard not fixed to the carriage in others, coeval, on the contrary, it is high at the level of the gates, like the English railways, so to speak, so how to adjust?
    Networks and trains were owners and competitors but, freight wagons aside, was the division rigid or was there the possibility that trains of a certain company circulated on another network?
    Thanks and happy holidays. I'm sorry for my English.

    putting the dcc chip in, is just a kind of "plug and play" that is, without having to solder?

    • @JamesTuverson
      @JamesTuverson  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s right, no soldering at all for this! You can just clip off the back LED headlight (you don’t need it for the EMD E7)

      @@joshuakeller1969 go with the one Digitraxx advises. I found a video on YT that used the “a” on a similar loco and I was just lucky it worked. I had to cut off the extra LED myself.
