This is so beautiful, but i cannot believe it came from the same minds as animal collective. It’s just hard to imagine that they became successful for the stuff they put out later when they already had this. This unironically goes harder than most slowcore bands from that era to me.
No Last Ball is like one of my favorite songs ever I honestly wish there was an LP. Avey’s lyrics are so cute and good and every song is just so catchy and gives me comfy feelings aaaa
it legitimately is, they apparently did acid the year after this for the first time and it marked such a dramatic style change. There's definitely weed influence here though lol
Avey tare said himself that pavement was an inspiration. Ive also heard other experimental indie artists in the same era reference pavement and Beck, most surprisingly (not to be a hater but i dont care for beck so it surprises me that total geniuses like clouddead were inspired by him partially).
Slint and Duster vibes for sure. Also reminds me a bit of Phil Elverum's first demos n collections as The Microphones like Tests and Wires N Cords. Emo Avey is a cutie.
ive listened to this release well over a hundred times the last few years. crocodiles and zebras is a perfect song. this release in general feels so strangely nostalgic, they nailed what they were going for. also everyone interested should check out the cool liner notes inside for a cool young picture of panda (i think) i honestly wonder if the group will ever acknowledge it's existence or if there is any more live recordings like the last one
Oh they have acknowledged its existence. They used to participate on the collected animals message boards from about 2005 to 2008 maybe? And they talked a lot about that era. I specifically remember geologist mentioning a song called Sarasota with Deakinn absolutely destroying it on the Moog synth.

Honestly I came back to it because of the new album that’s coming out in February. how it really embraces more of a traditional Banfield but it’s so earthy yet cosmic so I wanted to revisit this and compare. It’s so good! Really excited for the new record as well. That would be cool if they unearthed and officially released some old Automine recordings. And maybe an official release for that solo self titled Panda Bear album as well.

There's a lot of comparisons to other slowcore bands, I believe they have their own particular sound that may be reminiscent, but not a copy.
cool af that they were in a legit good slowcore/emo project before, crazy that so many musicians start that way
I agree with your assessment of Automone's sound. Very much a 90s slowcore and shoegsze feel with a hint of Pavement.
