I have been binge watching your videos this morning and feel like they have provided a great amount of knowledge I cant thank you enough for. 1 hour of watching your condensed videos saved me weeks of actually reading through these books but I still picked up the same message

I used a method of studying similar to this. I'd go to the library on a Saturday for three 2-hour study sessions. A total of six hours. I first sit in the lobby for 5 minutes and think about what I'm going to achieve in the next two hours. Then I'd go in ready to go. No distractions like at home. After two hours I'd leave for a 20 minute walk or lunch. I'd come back and repeat the process.
Works really well if you have a friend doing it too. You can discuss in the lobby what you are going to get done. (Don't sit next to each other when you go into the library and hit the bathroom first!) Even if you are not studying the same subjects it works really well at keeping each other accountable.
I find I can't do more than 6 hours. 8 is too much.

The JK Rowling thing I mean that's honestly how i expected most writers work. Dissappear to the countryside isolated with no distractions and get deep into things.

@@Ayo.Ajisafe well its not something new but more like recognizing what made these people who you are referring to good at wat they do and even others that succed at creative or "cognitive rich work" and the book gives you a way to apply this in your life and helps you become better at working at whatever that needs a lot of focus you should read it

I wish my whole life was like the college days. The hours of effort leading to a great payoff in the form of a good grade or presentation. Partying with friends afterwards. And then grinding the following day all over again. Collaborating and discussing ideas with like-minded individuals. You just don’t get that in professional life. Or maybe I was unable replicate that in a different environment.

Great summary, many thanks - deep work is enjoyable! - my tips for what it's worth: The deep task is 'setup' and the first task of the day, known the night before so I can "sleep on it"; cardio or some type of vigorous exercise followed by stretching relaxes me down into the deep zone; no emails and boundaries are drawn clearly with co-workers, phones are out of view; tea vs coffee; I repeat certain music daily, and it triggers the same modality and type of thinking; I use warm-up tasks to ease into deep tasks; Outcomes are clear, if I can't 'see' where I'm going, I won't achieve anything; I try to avoid stimulants later in the day, shallow sleep prevents me having gas in the tank to do deep work. The adenosine / caffeine relationship is very true for my body - I may not be able to sleep but in that state I can do no meaningful work either

At 3:53 I love how you zoomed out and allow the whole deepwork chart to stay. I find that allows a rythm of learning. When skip to the next screen we don't allow a sinking in moment. If you are pulled apart at the seams by competing interests and the multiplicity of a project (takes on many forms), this is how you should adapt a Deep Work Environment. Set up the room precisely. Forget about plans. Choose your one goal, and then list acceptable distractions- lesser goals, fun projects. Set up the room so it contains only those things and has ZERO junk distractions. No noise, no bells, no random interruptions. No people or pets.
Set out to do the project, so when you get pulled to other activities, they are all highly relevant to your core aim. Create a hard, solid, minimal environment to contain your chaos, then let your chaos be unleashed completely as it is. Aim for your goal, watch yourself falter, then come back to it.
Physical practices are essential. It must be physical. Shake out your chaos, put it into your whole body. Fixed Gaze Meditation is an integral physical practice on the low-energy, intense focus side of the spectrum that complements intense whole body exercise. Pick something, good enough, get started.

Deep think , deep work all you want but if you've "drank the Kool-Aid" so to speak and are currently , "battling high cholesterol," with toxic pharmaceuticals you will likely be deep into the throws of Alzheimer's or six feet deep long before any "increase in productivity."

I remember crashing at about 12pm the next day. But i finish the work without any distraction and got it delivered. These days it's hard to achieve this even with energy drink because of sound of generators as there is issue with electricity in Nigeria. I would rather copy the strategy of Bill and Rawlings now.

3:51 But much much more important than that is not being a slave of your own mind, those first impressions ("Passions" and "phantasiai" a Stoic would call), impulses and feelings. We usually get distracted by the most minute thing and don't question if what's distracting us is really valuable of it can be done later.
The people who have problem focusing (i'm really bad at this) are the ones who are really bad at prioritizing. The impact on our productivity is humongous.

    Deep Work Strategies
    1. Schedule and restrict distractions.
    2. Develop a rhythmic deep work ritual (Transform deep work into a daily habit)
    3. Have a daily shutdown ritual (Prepare for the next day)

This is a great video. I use a lot of your videos in my college success courses at Shasta College. In order to meet federal accessibility guidelines for education, videos are required to have accurate captions with proper punctuation and word matching. Would you, or whoever manages your TH-cam channel, be willing to add accurate captions for your hearing impaired viewers? Thanks so much!
