- While Zac Brown Band guitarist and singer John Driskell Hopkins has been on tour with the Grammy-award-winning country music group, he's been facing a battle behind the scenes: a recent diagnosis with ALS. CBS News correspondent Jan Crawford sat down with the musician to learn more about his fight to raise awareness of the debilitating disease.

I’ll pray for Johnand his family. My sister had ALS and although it was a horrific disease, I felt blessed to be able to help take care of her. She passed in 2019. God be with her and all those who are touched by ALS.
One of my good friends from college’s mom had ALS and it was so heartbreaking to watch her decline in those 4 years. A cruel disease is an understatement. Sending him so many prayers of comfort and peace. I hate this for him 💔

Aww bless him. So sad. You can see he's already struggling. My second cousin Doug died from ALS several years ago. He had a baby face and was the sweetest guy, so it was horrendous. Cruel disease indeed. His ex-wife took care of him until he died. Yes, ex-wife. She's a home health care nurse.

If I had a wish, I’d wish he could speak with my husband. With his diagnosis of ALS In 2021, my husband had to retire from UPS (driver). In the last few months we packed up our entire family (daughter, my mother and us) and moved to Tennessee so he can enjoy the life of retirement. Sadly, he has not come to terms with his disease and is not willing to accept it. It’s a pride thing for him. I worry about his mental health more every day. I pray for my husband and every other person going thru the awful disease both physically and mentally. And for the caregivers, the families and friends. Their struggles are real too. 🙏🏻

God Bless him for raising awareness and money for ALS. It's rare so not many people know what it is. Any high profile person like JDH who can help like he is doing will help all of us with this terrible disease. The first thing it took from me was my singing voice and the strength in my left hand so I could no longer play guitar. As crushing as that was, the worse is yet to come.

It is cruel! I'm caring for my husband who was diagnosed in 2020 with ALS. He can't speak at all anymore, and he used to talk my ears off and I didn't mind. He had the strongest arms (he was a farmer and mechanic), and now he can't dress himself, can barely lift his arms. Watching him deteriorate is the hardest thing I've ever had to do in my life. I can't imagine how he must feel, how frustrated he must be. Its a living nightmare.

I used to work in assisted living and there was a resident in my facility that had ALS. Naming it a cruel disease is a vast understatement. It's a prison. One where you are of sound mind, but lose almost all motor function...even the capabilities to walk, talk, and eat. Communication is almost completely void. It's the worst kind of nightmare.

My father was diagnosed at 81 with ALS! He was the greatest man I have ever personally known. The hardest worker and loved harder than anyone as well! He loved my mother til she died and then loved again before he died! He was diagnosis in October of 2018 and died in April of 2019! I took care of him. I couldn’t work of course and watching what it did to him I was able to work again for over a year! It is horrible. It is cruel. He always said he wanted to never lose his mind and little did he know all he would one day have was his mind. His body completely failed him. No voice , couldn’t eat, couldn’t stand or even sit. I have cried very little since I got somewhat past his death. Many sad things happened but I believe I have cried too many tears and so my eyes well up and then I just wipe them away. As long as we are alive we are blessed just to talk to those we love, eat with them or even alone, to wake up each day and be able somehow to do all that we need to for ourselves! Please know all the prayers are for your family at this time in your life ! Even when we can’t physically walk just walk with the Lord! Daddy always said if you go halfway the Lord will more than meet you in the middle! He was so right!!❤

I lost my husband to ALS in June, its a terrible disease. He only lived 3 months after he was diagnosed

This is Darlene. My husband was diagnosed with ALS Nov 18, 2021. He has lost his right arm and his left is nearly gone. He is now on a Trilogy for more than 8 hours a day. This disease is horrible!

WE all have something we will leave this world with....sadly his is ALS. Watching my own twin sister die from ALS was the most devastating loss of my life! Read "The Highest Hurdle" by Kim Wroblewski. It was written about her friend's ALS journey. It gave a real sense of this horrible disease and how people can come together to support those suffering from it and their families.

When my husband was a teenager, he volunteered to help build a haunted house for muscular dystrophy, little did he know he'd be diagnosed w/the adult form when he was 25....
Here in New Orleans, our own Steve Gleason, of the New Orleans Saints, took us through his journey with ALS with his documentary. I don't think I've cried so much ever.
It may be rare but I've personally known 3 people who died as a result of ALS. All men. Is it more common in men? I have a great fear of this disease, along with Parkinsons. Me personally, I don't think I would want to put my family through that, but which is more damaging to them? Fortunately my kids are adults now and I'm facing a life threatening illness. We've had this conversation. I think while concern for the family is extremely important in these situations, as the person dieing, I should be allowed to have some say in how I depart this life. With dignity, etc.. not with them looking back thinking how awful it got at the end.

In addition to the brutal impact on those with ALS, the saddest part about auto-immune disease is that we are trained to believe they are simply random bad luck when there is strong evidence that environmental and life-style factors are either a cause or a major accelerator in the number of incidences. Statistically ALS and related disease are occurring far more frequently than genetic factors alone can account for which means lifestyle almost certainly either causes these diseases or makes people far more vulnerable. Yet there is no push in the medical field to understand causes. It is all about reacting after the fact. I don't know if ALS and MS and related disorders can be prevented, but it sure looks like life events and life style are major factors in who ends up with these illnesses. Might finally be worth considering that these are not random events - just like many cancers likely aren't.

Well, I hope it raises awareness. So, while almost everyone was forced to get the vhaxxx. People with ALS who WANTED experimental drugs out of desperation have been denied for years. Makes sense right. I wish him the best.

@@Neeko_Z Yes it is valid that your point is ridiculous when you’re comparing trying to subdue or slow down a global pandemic by the use among other things, a vaccine with a clinical trial for ALS. It wouldn’t matter what type of clinical trial for ALS or cancer and other diseases were used or denied if the huge population of the sick, and elderly were dying of Covid. It might have been an inconvenience to get vaccines or take precautions but something had to be done in as short a time as necessary. If you were so concerned about people with ALS you would have realized that a vaccine to try to stop people from dying from a dangerous contagion such as Covid could help the people who are health compromised such as people with ALS and other severe diseases. Who reached the conclusion that the Covid vaccines were not effective? Many over the years desiring to be chosen for experimental clinical trials being denied, and then dying, not only from the horrible disease of ALS, but also from cancer, have absolutely nothing to do with the Covid vaccine and how it was distributed, and everything to do with the detailed eligibility of making sure a patient will do as well as possible and showing success so that the trial will be able to keep their stockholders and acquire more stockholders, thus their funding. It takes a lot of money for research and so research centers and facilities cannot afford to lose patients or not have patients do well on these trials and risk funding and the ability to move forward. I’ve been denied three different clinical trials, one of them that could potentially cure my otherwise incurable stage 4 cancer but for one basic thing I’ve been denied, and I understand, and I’m not blaming or angry at the fact that Covid vaccines were quickly manufactured and distributed and people were “almost forced” to have them. I’m not content with my medical options of being poisoned, fried, and surgically mutilated either but I’m not making derogatory statements about the Covid vax and trying to compare it with being denied a clinical trial that could save my life and potentially cure my cancer. You might as well be comparing medical things to cupcakes if you’re trying to compare the use of a vaccine for a pandemic and the ineligibility of a clinical trial for ALS. The simple fact that you’re bringing up the Covid vaccine trying to compare the two in a derogatory comment is in and of itself an indirect anti-vax comment. I’m through with this conversation as I choose to use my precious time in other ways. Be well!

I’ve heard it’s hereditary and especially for males. Like 50/50 is how it was described to me. I’ve asked god to spare my brother and our kids because I’ve been noticing irregularities in my physical health and am worried that’s why. I’m 36 and my dad passed at 54 from Als. Never heard of the disease before then and didn’t realize just how bad off he was. Next thing I knew he was gone. It might’ve been a year after being diagnosed if that. I’m going to work as hard as I can while I can to provide for my family because when it’s over it’s over and Our time is limited.

2:34 internet slacktivism at its finest. Proof the masses were more focused on making videos about getting drenched on, getting likes, and NOT about ALS itself.
It raised a lot of awareness.
Whatever. ALS it's a disease that affects relatively small numbers of people so it didn't t get nearly as much funding or awareness as diseases like cancer. Things like the bucket challenge have helped raise money and awareness. So while you poo poo it like it's useless take a step back and just look at the bigger picture.
Actually one of the few social campaigns that did create a measurable difference in awareness and research dollars.
It funded the research and development of only the third FDA approved ALS drug in history, Relyvrio or AMX0035. Maybe many didn't really know what ALS was when they did it but it doesn't remove the fact that they helped by raising millions for ALS.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, aka Lou Gehrig’s disease. A fatal, progressively debilitating neurological disease. You lose neurological control of your body and eventually it takes your life. It is a horrible nightmare for the people diagnosed and their families.
