    Whoa! When I was as kid in south Missouri in the early 50's one of the farmers still drove one of the "hit and miss" and that sort of became his name. I remember that not a one of the early tractors had a cab and some days were miserable for them. Thanks for sharing the video and the best of luck.

    @41Zman Really finishes the project nicely. It is a head turner in the parades. She really barks out the straight pipe. My camera actually cuts out on the audio when it fires, much louder and sharper in person. Good eye on the engine make. I actually ran them on the railroad when I was a kid.

    Is just the engine a 1918? The transmission and final drives are from an allis chalmers B. It was likely late 30s to 40s. So this was probably built after that.

      I started collecting engines with my dad and became tired of running them on a skid. Started collecting old iron to make fantasy tractors and pawn them off as real when I took them to shows. I’ve built 4 machines and will keep doing so. Future projects are a JD motorcycle ( Johnny Popper Chopper ), a JD truck, and anything else I can play off as a factory build.

      @@adamvanostrand2664 When I first posted the video I was trying to push it off as a factory built tractor. But through the years I’ve been outed and exposed as not telling the whole story. It is homemade. Built for parades and tractor shows. I converted everything to hand levers. Added an extra pulley and idler to run a belt on the off power side of the gearbox. All it does is spin for looks. No belt drive tractor was ever produced. I picked up a fly ball governor that I am adding in the future.

    What's a hit and mis engine ?

    • @RustedOldIron
      @RustedOldIron  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It was conceived in the late 19th century and produced by various companies from the 1890s through approximately the 1940s. The name comes from the speed control on these engines: they fire ("hit") only when operating at or below a set speed, and cycle without firing ("miss") when they exceed their set speed. This is as compared to the "throttle governed" method of speed control. The sound made when the engine is running without a load is a distinctive "Snort POP whoosh whoosh whoosh whoosh snort POP" as the engine fires and then coasts until the speed decreases and it fires again to maintain its average speed.

    • @PacoOtis
