Maybe you have covered it in another post, but an explanation of the difference between IMAP and POP as it relates to Gmail would be helpful. Also the option to leave messages on the server for a certain length of time in POP. I run a small IT service business that caters to residential users and often share some of your videos with clients. Thanks Leo!

And thank you for doing these vids, Leo. I can actually understand what you’re telling me, which isn’t the case with the other 99.999% of computer people.

Wow this was the best explanation I have heard about Gmail but also about, using a desktop program! I don’t listen to everything but I will definitely stay subscribed. Your videos are always very clear, you don’t click to fast when people are following. Great job thank you, and what do you consider is the best email desktop program

2nd email as a Label: Ive had a 2nd email setup as a label for years. No switching back and forth..no client..etc. works great

How about talking about sub labels? I use them regularly for my basic computers class.

That's a very interesting video - can I relate it to an earlier video about local email backup? Assume I have to restore my local email system for whatever reason and it contains multiple copies of an email in different gmail synced folders. Will the local restore sync a single local copy to gmail and gmail will ignore the folder structure completely (which will then sync and immediately delete files in the local restored structure); restore and interpret the folders as labels and reinstate those labels (preserving the local structure); try to restore multiple but "identical" emails in and throw an error because it's trying to produce duplicates; produce duplicates in without complaining or do something completely different? It seems to me that this could open a restoration can or worms.

I haven't tried this but I *believe* you'll get duplicated emails.

Good information. However, I still am confused by how Gmail handles incoming email. I've had some email that have ended up in 'IMPORTANT' but don't show up in "Inbox'. I also have an 'Amazon' label where email from Amazon go and bypass the 'Inbox" (something I probably set up when I didn't know what I was doing and not knowing that it would skip the 'Inbox'. Maybe a follow up video on how to customize (or fix what you messed up) would be great. Anyway good video.

Great video. I personally don’t believe Google actually deletes your emails when you click “Delete Forever”. The reason is too long to put into a comment, but I am reasonably sure Google copies your email to keep for their use for some period of time. You should do a follow up video on how your desktop email client acts with Gmail if it is configured SMTP rather than IMAP.

Ever since Gmail and its message grouping/threading became popular I have pretty much given up on email. I can never find the email because it's always within another email. Email was a great tool for communication, so of course it's been destroyed.

    • @askleonotenboom
      @askleonotenboom  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

You can turn that off in Gmail settings. It's one of the first things I change.

And on my phone I think the google mail app works differently than a web browser. If I delete an email in the app I think it removes all labels and adds the trash label. If I delete in the web browser I think it just removes the current viewed label and adds trash label. Not sure, but that is my impression switching between outlook, web, and gmail app they behave differently(definately outlook does).

This might be dumb but I have a lot of Gmail folders so I created a bunch of filters to move Emails immediately to the appropriate folder. But now I find myself missing emails. Instead of going through and looking at each folder for unread email, is there a way to be notified of all the emails that have come in for the last 4 hours for example? Probably not but thanks in advance.

Is this why Thunderbird has recently become impossible to understand? A vast line of headings now appears across the top of the page and it’s impossible to get rid of it to go back to the folders down the left side on which you click to show inbox, various email boxes, drafts etc contents.
I’m getting close to abandoning Thunderbird after decades of use - I’m fed up with programs changing fundamentally all the time for no good reason.

Gmail has an option to set the inbox into 5 categories: Primary, Promotions, Social, Updates, and Forums. That just adds 4 more labels making it more confusing as the email can be in several different places in the inbox. However, I don't use that and turn it off.

How do you filters thousands alot of email in inbox I can cry I tried to.better maybe I don't have sophistication I am afraid what should I don't know what to tell you.

A lot of it depends on your email program or interface. What do you use?

  • @KazrBrekker

  • @KazrBrekker

And I think Google chose this label thing deliberately so that users will be forced to use their own webmail client instead of another email app

Been using gmail since late 90s. The labels model is far superior. Forget about tryin to shoehorn it in with local email client. Why bother? Dont think it was ever meant to work that way. Internet not goin anywhere. You wont lose you gmail. Local client imap..pop..etc is old hat anyway imo. Can be pia

People lose their Gmail every day when their account gets compromised, or there's some other security issue. Desktop email programs connected to Gmail are an important way to back it up.

All of my email would be in there if I didn't drill down three layers every once in a while and delete everything.
