Unlikely. I’ve been using Roll20 since early 2020 and I get everything I need from it on the $5 a month tier. WotC has to both regain my trust and be superior to Roll20 for me to switch.
It is nice to see them do the "maps" thing for dndbeyond, but i think it's a bad move at this point with the 3d modeling that they are working on. I don't know why they didn't start working on the "maps" as soon as possible when dndbeyond was created, and to compete against other vtt's like roll20, rodeo, foundry, and owlbear.
Because DnDBeyond wasn't originally owned by WotC. And the original creators left after wotc bought dndbeyond (as far as I am aware.) The original purpose of DnDbeyond was to have all the resources you own at your fingertips organized and easy to access at your table.
DndBeyond was working on it, but then had to stop development when they got bought. Then WotC reinitiated as to not put all their eggs in 1 basket for their VTT. If you use DnDBeyond to run encounters that feature currently works, if not limitedly in Alpha testing. If your creatures or your players make a roll, the results will appear on the map. I don't use VTTs, but find them very interesting and this version is looking good for a 1 in all integration for people that in fact use DnDbeyond. People may not like WotC, but there are hundreds of people working there trying to bring about good and fun products to share in a hobby they love.
I think it is a good idea to integrate maps into DNDBeyond especially if it is just a value added to the master tier. There are definitely changes that could be made and I hope that they do a bit of a survey on it to see what people would like to see added in, perhaps icons you can select for status conditions or show concentration on a spell, etc.
I have pretty high hopes for this tool overall. It's going to take them a while to get everything ported over but it is very simple and intuitive. Considering this is the first version and they have made it very obvious that it is just the beginning, I expect they will add a lot of features that make it much more usable as they go along. My biggest concern is at what point do they raise subscription prices or offer new tiers at higher prices that include specific tools? Sticking with Roll20 and attempting to learn Foundry for the present.
This isnt competing with Roll20 or FG (at least, I sure hope not), it seems to be going after the more minimalist VTTs like Owlbear rodeo. It sill falls short, but at least it in theory could compete with those products.
@@TheCharacterSheet Eh, agree to disagree...I think the final form will be something like: Maps: Measuring, pointers, tokens, allows imports...competes with Owlbear-like VTTs The unreal VTT: fully 3d, animations, all the bells and whistles, walled garden...competes with R20, Alchemy, FG, ect.
I plan to use it this weekend for my Halloween themed game, using a projector. We normally use figs and terrain but didn't want to for this. Will I use it instead of Fantasy Grounds or even often at all, no but it's a clutch item.
Personally, I'll stick to Owlbear Rodeo as my VTT of choice! Easy to set up maps with its aligning tool, extension friendly, only the DM needs an account (free with optional subscription) and players can play without one. I play with homebrew classes and the Flee Mortals as well other Homebrew rules, so a VTT that is heavily tied to DNDBeyond is not for me, especially when there's better free choices for a browser based VTT
this would have been a great feature , if it was released a year or two ago, I have a suspicion this was pretty much ready before WoTC purchased DnDBeyond and was shelved in favor of the 3D VTT, this seems like a stop gap because its going to be awhile before that is ready for prime time
It's nice(?) that they're adding this functionality - but D&DBeyond has some much-promised functionality that still has not made it past Beta (or worse). Case in point - General Features, which was touted to help with Tasha's rulesets and whatnot, has not even been implemented and that was announced 3 years ago...
You criticized the MAPS for not being as robust as other VTTs but failed to mention this was an Alpha launch and the laundry list of items they listed on their upcoming/to-do-list. I am not saying this is going to compete with other well established VTTs but the video seems to be a little bias towards the “I hate WOTC’ stance and less a fair analysis.
Pretty sure this channel is more than a little anti-WOTC in general. I don’t think I’ve seen a single video from the promoting anything good from them. Not that there is much to work with honestly.
It's pretty basic, but I think it has a lot of potential. It's super fast and easy to use and import custom maps. Plus if you're already invested in the DnDB ecosystem, it's pretty convenient. YMMV but it's worth the extra few bucks per year to me.
Does anyone else remember when D&D had a VTT during 4th edition? I remember stumbling across it and thinking it was a great tool... since it was the only VTT I was aware of. Didn't get much traction playing any games in it back then. When my friends went online it was usually to play WoW. I wonder if they just dusted that off and tweaked it.
Well, I believe it's not complete yet, more like an early access at this point, but yeah for now it's not worth it. When it gets more, then I'll consider upgrading to Master. For now, I'm quite comfortable at Hero tier.
I haven't played dnd for a while. I started again during covid but then everyone went back to our regular activities and I haven't played... I started paying for Roll20 to have full access and I have not stopped paying for it even if I don't use it. If DnDBeyond had the 3D VTT I would have switched already and would have even found more people to play with just so I can use the 3D VTT... but they failed to deliver... this shitty map tool is never going to make me use it. I don't even use their online services, I'd rather continue to pay for Rol20
I wished more people would just try playing without all the computers and digital maps etc pull out books pencil paper and maybe get fancy and use some minis and dungeon tiles
Totally pointless. WotC is not seeing another cent from me, I'll stick to 5E (which my group loves!) and in-person playing, which is the true spirit of D&D IMHO...
Would you ever swap from Roll20, Owlbear Rodeo, or Alchemy to give "Maps" a try?
Probably not
@@323starlight fair, honestly
I'm done with wotc so no. There are lots of other people I would rather support, even if Maps works really well
NO!

Yes, this does feel like it would have been great...2-3 years back

Yeah, we can't complain about added value, we just hope it evolves into something with much better functionality
I’m holding on to my grudge. I’m going out of my way to not give Wizards my patronage, regardless if it’s free or not.

You will find Foundry is the way to go. Especially when you get all the cool free modules loaded.
This isnt competing with Roll20 or FG (at least, I sure hope not), it seems to be going after the more minimalist VTTs like Owlbear rodeo. It sill falls short, but at least it in theory could compete with those products.
This is just the alpha, the idea does some to be to compete with roll20 and foundry etc to be a full fledged VTT

A lack of 3rd party and homebrew support is deifnitely an issue

Yup, it was ready before purchase with a few more features ready
You don’t need a measuring tool. Count the squares, each square is 5 feet. Enemy is 6 squares from you, low and behold, 30 feet away! Wow math!

That's a very good point, a lot of people still waiting on that.

Does it work on mobile or tablet? Thanks

what about the 3d VTT using UE5?
Still in developmento or a dead project?

I actually think roll20 is very cumbersome. I am waiting toake the switch ASAP.
I think I will stick to using an actual table thank you
Fair, nothing really beats getting to roll real dice with real people
It is still in alpha… why is this going so hard at how basic it is
Roll20 already does all this and more plus its free
"A free feature... for master-tier subscribers"
Uh huh, ok then
It's a graphics app, not a VTT. sheesh

You know what will be very funny? If this "free vtt" will be more successful then the real vtt that they are working on .😂😂
You could be right
