Royal Navy Reserve - RNR100 Centennial Parade - Heart of Oak

  • This video is an extract from the RNR100 DVD. It was filmed on Horse Guards Parade Ground in London.
All in the video are volunteer reservists. The Guard spent 9 days being trained by the best Ceremonial Training Team the Royal Navy had.
Many thanks to CPO "Blood" Read, and PO Simmerman for their efforts.
The band played Heart of Oak for the whole period while the Ceremonial Guard was 'marching past' the Sovereign (represented by Prince Charles), hence why they don't play any other music while the 'Guard of Honour' is marching past.
Its the same if a Royal Marine Guard had been marching past the music would have been 'Life on an Ocean Wage' for 5 minutes.

May I speak as an ex Infantry RSM. WE have never fought a war nor won one without reserve forces, these boys here are a credit. Hearts of Oak! Steady boys steady, quite brilliant!

ah, there is no finer sight then that traditional uniform marching to Heart of Oak.

I love this march - it has great meaning for me as it was played by a band at my father's funeral as his coffin was carried out of the church. He was a RAN musician then bandmaster, so he would have marched off the parade ground many, many times to this tune.

Yup, the RSM was right - top-notch drill, impeccable turn-out. Puts some Regulars to shame. First time I have seen the Navy sword-salute (or I had forgotten the difference). Now THAT is the way to salute with a sword!

Still the best country for marching. We owe our boys and girls everything.

These boys are splendid. The navy does not march well by tradition; but these fellows do. I was an infantry RSM and speak from experience. I would be proud of them! deinitely. Hearts of Oak! Steady boys steady! Wonderful stuff!

You can see the PRIDE in the RNR - unpaid volunteers, same as the TA - who give up their spare time to be readily called to serve the country. I can certainly say that there are very few full time RN Service personnel who can match the RNR should they be put on parade. Most don't give a damn and couldn't care less about pride, honour and tradition.

Don't want to degenerate this into a "them" and "us" debate - we're more aligned now than we've ever been.
However, we do get paid as RNR - the same daily rate as the RN.
Me?? Mobilised reservist of 12 years, off to somewhere warm and sunny with the Andrew for the next 6 months.
