    things are looking great! when are we going to get a "cab ride" through the whole layout?

    • @AlleghenyNorthern

      ah, yes the ol' cab view. well - i don't have the video equipment for that at the moment - but i suppose it's probably about time for an investment.

    I wonder if adding some momentum to the ns unit cv3. ?

    • @AlleghenyNorthern
      @AlleghenyNorthern  ปีที่แล้ว

      so i messed around with CV 3 and also 4 because the CN glides to a stop where the NS unit just stops. I couldn't get CV 3 to the right number. i could get the NS slower or faster than the CN during the start - but the problem was as i went through the speed curve - the NS would become too slow and the CN would take off. it's almost like there's a loaded speed table of some sort in the CN unit but i confirmed there isn't. that's what has me so confused.

  • @trainsforbrains
    @trainsforbrains ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Your speed matching problem has to do with the idle increasing first before the loco starts to move. It's called Start Delay in ESU decoders.
    Have you changed CV124 in the sound unit? I would read what CV124 is now, so you can put it back if you have to...Mine says 36 with start delay on. Try changing it to 32. See what that does. I have a lokprogramer and if I turn off Start Delay, it changes CV 124 to 32.
    I'm reading that some ESU decoders or sound files don't respond to this change but that's what I would try. Let me know if it works.

    • @AlleghenyNorthern
      @AlleghenyNorthern  ปีที่แล้ว

      hmmm. i was afraid it was something like this. i would hate to turn that feature off on the ESU unit because it's a really cool feature. i'm wondering if my digitrax decoder has the ability to turn a similar feature on. i'm going to investigate and i'll let you know what i find out. if it doesn't work, i think i'm upgrading the NS unit to and ESU sound decoder! thanks for the info - this has me spinning off in what i think might be the correct direction - i'll let you know how this goes.

    • @trainsforbrains
      @trainsforbrains ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AlleghenyNorthern Oh cool. I don't think Digitrax has a similar feature, but I haven't messed with any of the newer decoders. After I started installing ESU sound, I never looked back. Good luck, and great channel!
      Edited to add: I run ESU with Digitrax all the time. Other than the initial start up, they speed match fine. I turn sound off when speed matching to get rid of the initial pause before it starts moving.

    Just checked out your layout overview. You have a lot going on! Can you provide any details on how you made your high voltage transmission towers near your power plant? If they are 3D printed , who makes them and are they available in HO scale. You'll know why I asked if you watched my latest video - thanks for subbing.

      I do know why you're asking and those are kits - laser cut wood kits actually. they're probably six or 8 years old and i found them at a hobby shop. i believe they're Osborne models.

    For speed matching, I have found that digitrax decoders sometimes only allow up to 127 on CV3 and 4 so they take off too fast no matter what. Even doing a custom curve through CV67-94 wont help much. I just temporarily speed up the accel of the engine I match with them since it doesn't take long.

    • @AlleghenyNorthern
      @AlleghenyNorthern  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Ah, ok. i was afraid it was a decoder issue. the NS unit is running a digitrax decoder and the CN is an ESU. That might be part of the problem. I really like how the CN unit runs, so i don't want to funk those settings up. I might have to change the decoder if i can't get them close enough to be acceptable partners.

    • @danagibbs3265
      @danagibbs3265 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AlleghenyNorthern I had the same issue when I put a TSU-KN1 into one P42 and then bought a non-sound Digitrax for my other P42. If I run the TSU engine alone, I just change CV3/4 to the normal setting, and change it to the faster setting before I link them up. I keep a list of all my engines and all edited CVs in a note on my phone, and if you don't, I highly recommend it. I'm considering moving to JMRI to make this easier.
      When doing CV3, higher is longer acceleration. If you set it above 127 and the engine acts like it has no momentum set, then that is the limit. It's the same as setting 0.
      I've been messing around with decoders on my NCE recently, so I've learned some quirks. If you have other questions, I might know the answer.

    Looks like you might need to adjust the starting voltage (CV2).

    • @AlleghenyNorthern
      @AlleghenyNorthern  ปีที่แล้ว

      So i have CV2 at O - my understanding is the lower the number, the less starting voltage. Do i have that backwards - as in i should raise CV 2 higher so it starts later?

    If I could make suggestion on the fire station scene with the ladder truck you mentioned an open house could also do a flag hanging on the top of ladder which can be done for that or honoring a award ceremony of a Lt becoming a Captain of the house. Or still up after a fallen hero

  • @darren6441
    @darren6441 ปีที่แล้ว

    Try your start-off voltage and might be too high or anything down your own their start-off voltage it seems like it takes off right away it's so you know but try that and then go through your other ones like you're mad and then your final voltage so try that like in your video it is definitely taking off faster than the other one so or what you could do is going to yours your CNN locomotive and see where you got the all the CV set at that one for the start-off voltage and all that try that maybe that'll help you if you know what they are so that might work for you it's looking good though

    • @AlleghenyNorthern
      @AlleghenyNorthern  ปีที่แล้ว

      i did match the NS to the CN's values for CVs 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 - so i looked at that as my zero-mark to start from. they're clearly motored or geared differently but another viewer pointed out it might be the decoder. so now i have to mess with it again and see if i can get enough patience to mess with the CVs or if just replace the digitrax decoder with an ESU one...

    I like your update, and it was cool you showed what you use to create snow scenes . I am starting an area using your opening shot got the rock work done, I used celluclay, like it a lot. Can't help you with the sound issue I thought you had to have an ESU programmer to do it right? On those.

    • @AlleghenyNorthern
      @AlleghenyNorthern  ปีที่แล้ว

      i'm not sure on the ESU programmer. my digitrax allows me to access all of the CVs so in theory it should work. i've not tried a more complicated programming with delays before so i'm making it up as i go. the celluclay stuff is nice - but it dries slow and it contracts when it does. i still use it, but i'm careful not to get it on the track because it pulls it out of alignment. i used sculptamold for the first time today and was surprised how fast it tried because i thought it would act like celluclay. i have a brick in my garbage that proves it cures differently!

    • @wilzdart
      @wilzdart ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AlleghenyNorthern I also use sculptamold , I was wrong about the celluclay what I use is Fast Mache by Activa it is still a paper Mache but it dries better and bonds to Foam. I used to use celluclay but switched. On your programing, my friend who is into HO runs a lot of sound ESU ( don't) he told me that with them (Their sound decoders) he bought the ESU programmer ( not cheap ) because he got better results fine tuning and got better results.
