  • James Burke, Great Britain's foremost commentator on science and technology, maintains that history is the result of "nudges"--Small events which trigger monumental chain reactions that in turn determine the course of mankind. Beginning with the stone ax "nudge" Burke examines the scientific and technological developments of other nudges and the way society changed as a result. Discusses the propagation of the artistic vs. scientific mind-set and the pros and cons of what he believes to be the next hand-ax phenomenon--the combining of data processing systems and telecommunications. Presented as a keynote address during Ball State's UniverCity 1992.

Burke is one of the best teachers in this world. He's able to bring together vast piles of information in a way that lets the audience see the patterns.

It fills me with sorrow that there are only 581 "likes' from 40,341 views of this fascinating lecture. And that there are only 40,341 views in the last seven years.

James Burke studied Middle English at Oxford. He was on a bus in Italy working on a Italian-English dictionary when he saw an ad for a job as a TV broardcaster. He deciced if the bus happened to stop at the next intersection he would take it as an omen to apply for the job. !!

No trolls, I can remember the 1st connection series. My wife bought it for me last Christmas. She could not believe how relevant it was for today. The guy is a genius I feel that as a brit he was more relevant to me than Sagan. I studied history at University. He should be a national treasure. If you are interested in history of science look for Professor Alan Chapman. I enjoyed Sagan Cosmos as well. If I have offered anyone I apologise.

When Microsoft held its 20th Birthday party in Seattle (back in the 1990s), Mr Burke was the only guest speaker- he was amazingly enlightening and entertaining.

Ironically the Google algorithm I am lead to believe promotes content which has many comments. Ironically many comments below TH-cam content is no more than childish name calling. James Burke is possibly the greatest English speaking presenter I am aware off. This content deserves sharing.

At 1:01:01 a questioner asks (in 1992, several years before the social media revolution) from where will emerge the democratisation of data. Burke's answer is astonishingly prophetic, in that it'll come from the users rather than the designers.
The digital tug-of-war we live with today blurring the lines between facts and opinions is perhaps the unintended consequence of those seeking to control any narrative that benefits them (i.e. opinions) and those seeking to find out what's actually happening (i.e. facts).
In 2024, this part is worth another listen!

And then at 1:04:51, after all this customised, interest specific content delivered is straight to your computer "and THEN who'll become president?"
Even the great James Burke couldn't possibly have predicted 2016, and possibly 2024.

Wonderful, if superficial. But then it is deliberately superficial so as to 'see' the connections (as JB called his 70s TV programme). I was watching those wonderful programmes (where JB energetically ran up and down the steps between the studio audiences) in the early 70s as I 12 year old and it was exactly these programmes that triggered my interest in science. I remember how excited I became when learning from JB how events long ago triggered a chain of other events that lead directly to our world today.

Have fiber optic to the house her in small city Minnesota. Network TV, not very often. He predicted 28 years ago. Network and cable news have gotten massively bad.

Smart as he was, he mistook the future as fibre optic instead of wireless. But then he absolutely nailed the consequences - 'Then Who Will Be President?' Eeek!!!!
James Burke, complete hero, if you haven't seen his TV series Connections go watch some entertaining science history. No fooling!

At 49:40, a trillion operations per second by 2030? Did that years ago. This laptop I am using does that easily, cost me only $1000, and with the Internet I can read almost anything I want. With my cell phone I have Captian Kirk's communicator. Do not yet have the transporter or warp speed yet, but that is probably not too far off.

The only thing we can say about predicting the future, in regards to technology, is that one should be as bold and "out there" as possible in regards to prediction. Then, cut down the time scale by 30%, double the amount of whatever you're predicting, and you just might hit the lower end of reality.

How can a person be so capable of forseeing the future and .... be right. I don´t know if the amount of trillions of digital operations will be ever available to make a computer creative.

    • @ericdew2021
      @ericdew2021 3 ปีที่แล้ว

A trillion operations per second is a teraflop. We have CPUs and GPUs that can handle 50Tflops already. And priced at around $250. So we've exceeded those numbers.

I find Burke to be overconfident, and perhaps a bit dated. Compare him to someone like Will Durant, whose seminal histories were finished half a century earlier, and yet which had a degree of nuance which would not be out of place in a modern history textbook.
