  • Dogs can be trained to smell when someone with diabetes has low blood sugar. 28-year-old Samantha Stocking adopted Korey when he was just 2 months old, and she’s trained him to act as her service dog. Stocking has Type 1 diabetes and Korey alerts her whenever her blood sugar is too low by nudging her leg. He will then reportedly fetch her a bottle of juice.

This is the reason why you don’t distract a service dog. Don’t pet or anything. They are doing life saving work.

    • @chienpo2945

You can pet - but ONLY if you ask the owner first. Do not get offended if they say no.
This goes for any dogs too. You don't know what their behavior is like or what the situation is. Always ask for permission to pet.
      Have a nice day.

@@chienpo2945 No .... Just no. You never ask to pet a service dog, you don't get to pet one because it's a working dog. A dog who is there to make sure their owners don't go into a medical emergency. They are there for their handlers not us who want to pet them and coo over them on how good of a dog they are. What if we distract the dog pulling them away from their handler and he or she suddenly drops to the floor in a seizure because we lured their SD who is their alert signal that they need to do what is necessary to prevent a seizure and from hurting themselves. Service dogs are working dogs who's mission is solely to protect and alert their owners from a medical emergency, on their off days they get treats, playtime, happy time, snacks and a good rest

A few years ago, I was at the hospital for a checkup, and the cutest little service dog walked onto the elevator with her owner. It was tempting to ask to pet her but I knew better because I knew she was working. Just moments later, I felt her cold nose lightly brush up against my finger. I kept a straight face but deep down inside I was smiling ear to ear.

Yes little dogs can be service animals and it is annoying when we go to the store and people try and say he can't be a service dog because theirs no service such a small dog can perform. He has also seemingly learned the triggers for her PTSD on his own and alerts her when someone comes or is coming into a room, or someone at the store is getting or is going to get too close to her... He is an amazing little dog I must say.

We culled off wolves/close ancestors of wolves that weren't nice to hunter gatherer ppls...while kept the nice ones that knew if they didn't bite the hand would feed them. Which over time caused selective breeding, cause the wolves that stayed with hunter gathers would breed with other wolves of similar temperament. And that process leads to domestication syndrome.

A towel with a low sugar sample of their sweat/saliva. Ketones build up when ur sugar is high or low. This smell often is said to make someone's breath fruity or bad when it is to a point humans can smell it. But a dog can sense it well before a human (we have 6million olfactory centers, they have about 100million, while the part of the brain that processes and interrupts smell is about 40 times larger than humans.) But this is great cause they can smell the changes quicker.

Oh friend, welcome to dogs. Their sense of smell is 10,000 to 100,000 times better than ours with 300 million olfactory receptors compared to our 6 million. Even the part in their brain that analyzes smell is 40 times better. It'd be less time consuming to ask what they can't smell vs what they can.

Both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetics could get high levels of blood sugar when the cells of the body aren’t able to uptake the sugar for fuel. No fuel=the body starts to shut down. The body attempts to consume other lesser used sources of fuel, but a waste product of these alternative energy pathways is ketones. Ketones build up and get excreted in the breath and sweat. The smell of ketones can be a warning sign that blood sugar levels are already dangerously high. If the blood sugar problem is not addressed, hospitalization may be required.

Dude, what? Like u didnt actually show us anything besides boop and sit. You could take out the word diabetic out of the video and it would make more sense

The booping is the alert to tell the owner their sugar isn't right, right now. The explanation of the low towel explains how dogs are scent trained to be diabetic alert service dogs. Does that make more sense?

What do you mean by low towels? I have a puppy and I want to train him how to tell. Whenever my sugar is low. How do I make low towels?
