    I have a Generac GP 7500 with a Generac ($199.00) transfer switch. I had a certified Generac tech install the switch ($150.00). Plus he balanced the load and I am able to power my entire house, minus the A/C. During power outages I disconnect/turn off all un-needed circuits just to make sure I don't overtax my unit.

    I had a Generac 17,500 watt generator. The Unit had very few hours on it. Just before the warranty went out it started putting out 137 volts out of the 120 sockets, and 275 out of the 240 sockets. I went out the next day and it would not even start. Since it was still in warranty (one day left) I took it in and had it repaired. It was the main computer board. I never trusted it after it was repaired and sold it.

      If your generator was putting out 137 and 275, my guess is your AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulator) failed. If you were using the generator with 137/275 coming out instead of 120/240, you are god damn lucky to have any of the appliances in your house left working.

    I had the same generator , kept it for about a year before reselling, due to the fact that it only runs for 10 hours on 16 gallons of gas at 50% load , we have power outages here for weeks at a time and i could not feed it the 100 gallons a week I needed so again sold for a smaller 10,000 watt generac that has way better fuel economy, was a super nice generator but was not cost effective for me

      I have the same one with the gas conversion and I love it. You simply run it on gas when you start it and switch to the propane after. I agree a smaller unit is more cost effective with a window AC for extended outages.

      People generally run a battery powered inverter for situations like that, and then let the generator cycle on at 30% power for example.

    The real shame of this unit is that it is capable of 72.9A running and 109.4A surge, but the largest plug on this unit is only 50A. This should have at least come with a 60A (14-60R) plug and breaker. Or, lugs off a larger breaker so I can use basically all the capacity on a single connection with a more custom connection method. Those extra amps above 50A are precious. 22.9A/240V is basically your standard 50 gallon water heater and some of your ceiling fans and lights. Mind as well get a 12kW unit (50A at 240V) and save the up front cost and use less fuel per hour to run it.

      Perhaps but even if you push the 50 amp breaker at 80% you will still only be using the unit at 65% load which is good for fuel and for the generator. If you want to unleash the total power take off the cover to the stator and see wires 11, 22 and 44 these can be wired straight to a terminal block using #4 and to a 70 or 80 amp breaker since breakers are at 80%. People are doing it. I opted to install a 60 amp breaker so 48 amps at 80% put a meter on it to read the A and B legs. I then use the 30 amp outlet to power 2 frigs and 2 freezers in my garage. This has worked well. It's a marketing ploy I get it but still a solid performer with the propane conversion kit

      What I did with my 17,500 watt generac was put in a sub panel.. I got my 50 amp plug going to my main panel and the 30 amp 240v plug going to my sub panel and when we lose power I turn the mains off on the main panel and the sub panel and I have the breakers split up so I don’t have to turn any breakers off.between both plugs I can run my whole house.

      I know I'm a year late but, I have the 50amp plugged into my main house panel running all the 120v stuff and the 30amp hooked up at 240v to my outside 28amp draw 4-ton condenser running everything. also my water heater is gas. so I'm using the 50amp and 30amp at the same time.

    What octane gas do you use for it? We were told to use ethenol in our generac generator and pressure washer.

    I have the 17,500 version mine is up against the house as yours is, the battery has heat and cold applied to it on a yearly basis I am thinking of buying a new battery,putting it in my basement and running a battery cable to the generator that way all maintenance can be done in the basement and the battery in a constant regulated temperature .

    I’ve had one of these since March of 2010. It only supplies 12000 watts out of the 220 plug. Only have 192 hours on mine and I’ve already had to replace the AVR and now just two days ago the rpm’s went way up and I had to get to it and throw the 50 amp circuit breaker off to keep from frying every thing in the house. It then shut off and will start but won’t stay running without the rpm’s going sky high. Very disappointed in it.

      Sorry to hear about the issues you have experienced. I have been fortunate to have only needed it for a few hours over the past 10 years and cannot believe how the price has doubled on this generator since then.

      I repaired mine. It was the control board for the idle control, $230.00. I bought a DuroMax 13000E for our backup for our 24kw Generac propane. With the price on this Generac 17500 watt almost doubling I can probably get what I paid for it once Governor Newsom law goes into effect in 2024 of no new gas powered generators sold in Commiefornia.

    Nice generator, well-done video. I did the same thing as you, but with a Troy-Bilt 7000 XP (7 kW/10.5 kW surge) and love being immune to power outages. I'm curious why you chose a 17.5 kW model if you're connecting it to a transfer switch via the 50A outlet, which limits you to 12 kW. Do you expect to connect loads to the other outlets, while simultaneously feeding the house? My primary concern with over-sizing that far is fuel consumption. Larger engines are typically more thirsty, even with light loads, than smaller engines carrying the same load-- which is one reason I went with a 7 kW unit rather than 10-12 kW. During widespread outages, refilling the gas cans can be a challenge, so my focus was to use as little fuel as possible while still powering all circuits we'd need to carry on a normal life.

      generator is not necessarily the best for my application and I was looking at
      the 17,500 watts feature and did not realize it was across several outlets, not
      just one output. Probably more suited for a construction site with no electricity.
      Whenever bad weather is predicted I fill up all of my 5 gallon gas cans just in
      case and if not needed they are poured in the automobiles. Actually a 5 to 10 kW
      unit would have been adequate for what I needed.
      Since this purchase only a couple of power outages lasting a
      few hours but not days at a time. It’s like an unused insurance policy and the
      power company has done a lot of work trimming trees that was knocking out the
      power every time the wind blew and of course tornados and storms can still
      happen causing days of outages. More options are available now and if I had a do over I
      would probably buy a whole house generator and large propane tank.

      +CarveTools Ditto on the whole-house thing. Cost is very reasonable, and it would run the central A/C which is a big deal in the hot and humid subtropics we call home (Florida). The primary thing that kept me from that was fuel. Utility gas isn't available here, and I didn't want to install a 300 gallon eyesore in the back yard to fend off the rare power outage. But I admit, every month when I do the obligatory load test, the noise of the portable generator (while not horrible) makes me want a Generac Synergy-- variable speed, fuel efficient, MUCH quieter (would not disturb the neighbors running overnight) and would power everything including the A/C. If I could think of a way to camouflage a propane tank in a way that blends in with the rest of the landscaping, I'd do it. So far though, no workable ideas... and we'd have to tear out fences and lots of landscaping to bring in a backhoe for an underground tank.

      Has anyone else considered using propane? I added a kit to my 12,500 / 18,500 watt generator and 170 gallons of propane. Now I can run it for 4 days straight if needed. Of course I run 4 hours on and 2 off to stretch it if needed.

    Why in the world is there no 50amp output on this unit you can only use 1/2 of ita power unless you runs cords from the unit.

      The 240 Volt 50 Amp outlet plug is inconveniently located at the bottom.

      I am not an electrical engineer, but loosely speaking most 30 amp generator outlets are only rated up to 7,500 watts. Not bad, but certainly not enough for everyone. Therefore, if the portable generator has a maximum or running of 8,000 watts or higher, why are there almost no 50 amp (straight blade, 4 wire) receptacles to hook up on any of these portable generators unless you get into the mega expensive ones?!?!?

      @NonyaBusiness! the unit puts out 70 amps,so yeh you can use the other plug-ins while still using the 50 amp plug

      It looks like he's using the Manual Transfer Switch Kit Model 6296. That includes everything you need for a 50A whole house solution.

    Bad choice - over-powered for a single 50 amp interlock or transfer switch. Gas guzzling that you don’t even mention the more 30 some odd amps you aren’t accessing without having another cord hooked into the 30 amp outlet. It’s like driving a Ferrari when the gas pedal only lets you top off at 100 mph. What I’m getting at is a 15000 watt peak/12000 watt running generator would have down the same thing as that beast.

    Indicator says oil now or oil low. This is not accurate oil is fine. I didn't reset the hour meter when I changed the oil. Is there a way to reset the display? Looked in the manual don't see anything that speaks to this.

      Absolutely overkill a smaller one would be just fine. I have used it one time for about 4 hours since purchase. It's kind of like auto insurance you pay for every 6 months and hope you don't need it.

      The cover is a "Charbroil" for a large gas grill and it fits great! You can buy several of these for the price of a Generac.

    If you're going that big just get a whole house unit where you're not filling a gas tank up every 5 hours. The burn rate for that at 50% load is around 1.5 gal per hour.

      You can purchase them with many different lengths or you can order your own length of cable and plus and build your own. This is more cost effective but you will need to watch some you tube vids on how to assemble it.

    If you are only using the 240V/50A outlet to your transfer switch why do you need a 17,500W generator? The most you will use with that setup is 240V x 50A = 12,000W.

      @@BOB12349307 you're probably right. That is the most common failure point, and draining the carb bowl might be enough, without removing the carb. Ethanol gas allows moisture from the air to absorb into the gas, mix with the ethanol (think vodka), and sink to the bottom of the tank, and in turn, to the bottom of the carb bowl. And engines won't start on water (or vodka).

      Hey Brian, I found mine on Ebay for $10.50 titled, "OEM Generac 065787 Portable Generator Battery Charging Cable." Remember, the generator must be running with Idle control off for charging to take place. Just looked, there are still plenty available. Hope this helped.

      I use a trickle charger on a timer to keep the battery charged. You would think this expensive generator would charge its own battery.

      There is a 50A plug 0:56 shown at the bottom of the main panel. The 50A breaker for it is upper middle.

      @NonyaBusiness! There does exist a NEMA 14-60 standard plug and receptacle, however, it is not commonly used. In fact, I have never seen it used. I think part of the reality in this case is that A) the entire generator package is not meant for continuous duty at or near maximum output, and B) your fuel consumption would become unmanageable if you did. I know people want the right to do whatever they want. That's fine. The full load fuel consumption on this unit is 3.2 gallons/hour. That's almost 77 gallons per day. This is highly impractical for me, both logistics and cost. I have been through more hurricanes than I can remember. I prepare for 5 days of fuel, water, and food, although I have gone without power for 10 days on two different hurricanes. The efficiency of all these non-inverter type generators, whether 3500W or 17500W is actually a lot closer than you think on a fuel per watt basis. If you use more watts, you spend more fuel. Its really that simple. The best course is to live with less, and just power essentials. The fridge, some lights, a fan, charge the phones, keep the internet on, a TV, and maybe a window or portable AC. Occasional coffee maker or microwave. Cook on the grill. Trying to power your whole house is kind of a PITA. To each their own. I run a 7200W non-inverter generator in the daytime, and a 3100W inverter generator at night. 9-11 gallons a day, and we are plenty comfortable with our 12000btu portable AC. Neighbor runs a 15kW non-invertor generator 24/7, with central AC. Goes through 40-45 gallons a day. Yeah, no thanks.

    I can not find any info on how many Surge watts are available to the 50 amp plug. Do you know if all 26,240 surge watts are available thru the 50 amp plug?

      I never found that information either but assume the AC maximum output motor starting watts of 26,250 would be the total of all combined circuit outputs. The 240 volt 50 amp outlet at full capacity would be 12,000 watts and not the total 17,500. This style generator is not the best option for a whole house emergency power source but would be great if the entire 17500 watts came from the 240 volt outlet.

    I never use a transfer switch.... I have a brain. Main breaker off... generator breakers on... Generator breaks off... main breaker on. No brainer. Wasted 2.30 minutes on stuff not the generator. How big of an a/c unit will it run?

      Connecting a generator to existing house wiring should be done by a qualified electrician and requires a transfer switch that is in accordance with the National Electrical Code along with state and local electrical codes. Referring to NEC Rule 220.87 will help you with load calculations for HVAC units. Articles 445, 700, 701 and 702 explain the requirements to connect to house wiring. These rules are in place to protect against conditions such as carbon monoxide poisoning and voltage feedback to the power grid. Linemen could be electrocuted due to an improperly connected generator as they work recovering from your power outage.

      Like I said, it's a no brainer. Your making it sound difficult to throw off your main house breaker and flip on your breakers to the generator. We got our power back today after 6 days. None of the lineman got electrocuted because nothing was going back up the pole. It's not that hard. :-) Carbon monoxide poisoning has nothing to do with hooking up a generator outside to a power panel box. Try something else that I can explain away. It's simple. :-)

      Don't know what country that is in , however in florida usa. you can use manual or automatic . Sounds like a yankee thing to me, like Pa. anything to bleed more money out of people. :-)

      I do not like transfer switches as they limit which circuits I can power during an outage. I chose an interlock and direct wiring the generator to a 50 circuit breaker in the panel to power the whole panel. Then I can prioritize which circuits I power.

    Hello I have quick question...
    What is the biggest Gage wire coming out of your generator / alternator head unit going into the electrical panel?
    I just bought the same model the 17500E.
    The biggest wires coming out of my unit are only 3, 10 Gage wires??
    I looked thru all of the wires in the black split loom tubing just behind the battery coming out of the generator head and 10 Gage was the biggest one in size which make me wonder....
    I am puzzled as how they can get 17500 Watts of power with only a 10 Gage wire?

      I have never paid attention to the wire size until now and yes they are indeed small. A normal 70 amp circuit should be wired with 6 awg copper depending on length and 10 awg would handle 40 amps max. The good news is I have had no issues so far with Generac’s design.       I have a Generac 12,500 and I was recommended a 6 Gauge / 4 wire for my plug from the generator to the house from www.wireandcableyourway.com if you are going to use the 50 Amp plug. It is rated for 45 Amps and have used it numerous times for powering my whole house both with gas and propane via the 50 Amp plug with no issues.

      the length of the 10 awg is a foot or soo which is fine. one of the reasons behind size of wire is length. the longer the length the bigger the wire gauge. but within a few feet its not as much of an issue at this level of engineering

      @@watertanks4uwv probably just put a pull start on it rather than an electric start and maybe a mechanical fuel pump vs an electric fuel pump. Just a guess.

      That sounds tempting, and I understand the logic (see Carrington Event). But I have been wondering lately. If I do that, then it only makes sense to EMP proof every electrical load, too. Maybe I'm missing something.

      I have 7.2 hours on it as of today and most of that time has been when I run it every few months. This has been the best insurance policy for power outages since it having it.
