Thank you so much! This is the first video I've found that clearly demonstrates, with up close video, the steps for threading this machine. I'm very grateful!
Just picked one of these up refurbished and serviced a couple months back and completely forgot they want the thread to go in from the outside. Saved my morning, thank you!
Thank you for using the orange/red thread. Easy to see on the video. I have not used a sewing machine in years. Was getting lost on how to thread around tension thing.
I can't thank you enough for this video, I just inherited a M237 and I was struggling to follow the manual for threading the bobbin yarn. Your video was so clear!!!
Thank you for taking the time make this! I am fairly new to sewing and was lost on how to begin using this machine when it was given to me. This is by far the easiest step by step video I have seen.
Thank you. I’m making myself a coat and I’ve only ever taught myself to hand sew. My mom has a sewing machine from 1995 that she never figured out how to work and never used, guess what? I couldn’t work it either. So we grabbed grandma’s singer from the basement. She passed young before I was born and I was named after her. Dad commented that she was probably the one who wrapped up the cords before it was put away and was a bit emotional to undo. I’m getting a bit (a lot lol) teary eyed at the idea of having a connection to her like this. Maybe I’m just an emotional teenager, I don’t know. But thanks, I hope I can figure out how to use this one.
That is a very heartwarming story and you are right, it is very likely it was your grandmother who wrapped those cords, I hadn't even thought of that. Good luck on your journey, I bid you lots of luck.
Thank you, I just purchased a 237 at thrift store for $25😊 I haven't used a machine in years. I remembered mostly but that darn bobbin had me stumped 😂 Thanks again
Hi there yes, I recently purchased a 237 supposedly in good working order, and after a quick oiling tried it out, but it keeps bawling up the top thread and eventually breaking it. I was hoping I may have been threading it incorrectly, but after watching your tutorial, looks like I was threading at the same way, having a tough time now figuring out why it keeps trying to cut and ball the upper thread
I don't know but if this is any help, the original user's guide refers to the bobbin direction, with diagrams, showing that the bobbin spool should unwind in the clockwise direction. The little thing that sticks up upon which the top thread spool is placed, may be referred to as a "spindle." Thanks for the content. Keep up the good work. בס'ד
I wish fast was my problem, but mine is very slow. To answer your question, the problem lies within your clam shell foot controller, it needs to be adjusted inside. Andy Tube on TH-cam has a video you can watch on how to make adjustments to the pedal but if your not sure if you can do it, then take it to a sewing machine repair shop. Hope this helps, I'll have to get a new pedal for mine.
My 80 year old aunt gave me her old one, but it was outside in the shed and it does not want to run very well. I would really like to get this one running again, as I have a 1880 home with a bank barn. I homestead. The house has the two entry doors on the porch and we raise old heritage breed Red Wattle hogs on pasture, and we garden, and I keep the house all original. I just like old things. The motor seems to not want to turn the belt. It feels bound up, or not free spinning. I want to lightly use some break free or something, but I don't want to mess it up.
At this point, you aren’t messing anything up that isn’t already broken. If tied to the machine, you might want to be on the lookout for a parts machine and do some parts swapping.
Thank you for the video. I just bought this model to teach myself how to sew. Your video is very helpful but starting from :24 seconds of the video my thread is not going through the wire, when I push it back. What am I doing wrong?😮😊
Ah I see - I always start with the top tension around 5 - adjust from there based on the stitches. Bottom tension is unrelated, we do have a video on how to check that.
I have this same machine! I purchased mine in 1971, I still have my owner's manual to it, too. I am now 71 years old and still sewing with it... it's a work horse! I was dusting my machine and am now trying to figure out how to replace the shuttle I removed. I was hoping to find a tutorial on replacing the shuttle once it's been removed for dusting and maintenance. Can you help me out?
Depends on the style, as there are two styles. That being said I believe they are mostly either metal or plastic, but it’s the shape that is important, one is older, the other newer.
I just found this machine in my basement...I knew the table was there but I thought it was empty. I want to see if this works. How do I clean and or grease this as I have lived here for 12 years and know it sat there for much longer. Don't know last time someone used it. Plus there is no presser feet or bobbins with it. What style bobbins does it take? Is it a low or high shank machine? I an knew to sewing....thank you for you time
That may be a tension or timing issue. Adjust all tensions (including the bobbin) to the middle and see if that helps - if not, TH-cam how to fix your timing
Thank you so much! I have my moms old machine & its temperamental af & I always got frustrated & had to call her. We no longer speak so this is amazing! Thanks so much!
I have the same machine model 237.. what bobbin case holder I should buy since there are no bobbin case holder anymore for this model been manufactured? Please help me
Hi, could you explain to me why my sewing machine (Singer 60-11) doesn't pick up the lower thread? I'm going crazy, I tried everything (changing needle, changing thread, inserting upper and lower thread again and again.....) thanks!!!!!
Um you missed a guide but i know why , your missing the guide at the needle clamp ! I have this exact machine , someone tossed the poor thing to the curb for scrap , i grabbed it and brought it home cleaned all the cigarette smoke off it and oiled it let it sit cleaned it again new needle and boom mint running machine only missing bobbin case and i had many at home 😁 free is awesome and this machine works the same , can i ask if it still sews ok with out it ? All my vintage machines have one at the needle so ive never gone without threading every loop .
Unfortunately that may end up being a timing issue. If you’re feeling brave, look up how to adjust the timing on a sewing machine here on TH-cam - there are videos on how to do it!
Hello, I have a question I hope you can help me, I am teaching myself how to use a sewing machine, I followed your steps to put the thread but at the time of sewing the thread tangled and the needle ended up breaking, what am I doing wrong?Thank you very much for your help in advance.
@@RedBarnHomestead Thank you very much, I will check that video and follow the instructions. My sewing machine is also a singer model 237, only that it comes a little different from the one you have. And thank you very much for your help, have a great day !!! 🙂
I can - it’s pretty simple, there’s a little screw beside the needle - turn that to loosen until the needle comes out and replace with new needle then tighten the screw.
@@RedBarnHomestead thank you for answering!! The dial turns and I can see it moving while I’m turning it sort of like nut on a bolt.. when I turn it to the right it goes in and when I turn to the left it comes out, but the tension is really tight even at 0 if it’s at 9 it’s impossible to pull the thread through..
By far the most helpful video I found for an old machine I was gifted! Thank you!
Glad you found it helpful! Working on some new videos

ty for such an easy to follow video and being straight forward. i'm setting up my moms old 237 and this was beyond helpful! thank you.
Very glad it was helpful!
Love your video and love your voice. You embody calm and reassurance.
Thank you. I do have a face made for radio. :p
Thank you for showing this and refreshing this old lady…
Awesome!
Thank you! I got this sewing machine from my husband’s great aunt but it had no manual with it. This has helped me get it threaded!
Perfect! Hope it works well.

Thank you so much this helped me start my mom’s sewing machine.
That’s great to hear!
Best video out there for threading this machine! Thank you!
Thank you so much!
Helpful video. Just inherited this machine and a few others
Yes, most people are getting these through family or 2nd hand now.
Thank you for this video, I could not figure out how to thread the bobbin
This was indeed a super helpful video!
I’m glad it was useful.
Just picked one up at the curb. Wasn't sure how to thread it. Thank you

Excellent video thanks you for help me from Mexico bendiciones
Please can you tell me how can i sew with this machine slowly because i have the same machine but it s very fast . Think you
When you press on the foot pedal - do so very lightly. If it does not go, use your hand to turn the hand wheel (on the right) and get it started.

I just bought one and need help adjusting the tension! And no book so what is the dial on top 0-8? Please post a video!
I always start with the top tension at 4-5 somewhere in the middle. Adjust the bobbin tension first (we have a video on how to check it!)
I have same machine .. But I want to know if this machine sews stretchable fabric
It could, no doubt, but try it first.

Sounds like it might be broken, it should capture the thread and move on, so it letting go may need some adjustment.
Please talk about the thread tension regular
How so?
@@RedBarnHomestead how to adjust it correctly ? Also does it help with bottom tension? Are there any number recommendations on the tension regulator?

Hi, my mum is giving me her Singer 239, do you know if this will be the same set up for threading and the bobbin? Thanks
Similar if not the same.

I have not touched that machine in over a year...so I'm not going to be of too much use. Its my wife who usually helps me with these machines. Sorry.
Can you show what settings you have on and are using
The crescent moon shaped metal piece with the peg for the bobbin came out of my grandmother’s 237. What do I do?!
It’s needs to go back in, and there is a clip that holds it in.
does the silver part at the bottom just slide to open?
Yes, its called the throat plate and it does just slide out.
I have this same machine and it is not catching the bobbin thread. Any ideas on how to fix it?
Look up how to adjust the timing - that’s often the issue and it’s not too hard to fix
Hello, the thread of my bobine doesn't want to go up with the needle and the top thread. I don't know what to do
This might be a spot where you need to observe a working machine to see where your machine isn’t working correctly.
Do I need the metal bobbin or can I use a plastic one?
Depends on the style, as there are two styles. That being said I believe they are mostly either metal or plastic, but it’s the shape that is important, one is older, the other newer.

Take a look at our other videos on this machine!
@@RedBarnHomestead I seen them after I posted this question. Thank you so much for doing these videos!
hello the needle does not move but the motor runs is there any button that I do not know? thanks
Yes, the hand turning wheel has a clutch that needs to be turned tight to engage.
I've been trying to get mine to work, got it threaded but only the first stitch goes through it seems like and then it gets tangled
That may be a tension or timing issue. Adjust all tensions (including the bobbin) to the middle and see if that helps - if not, TH-cam how to fix your timing

I have the same machine model 237.. what bobbin case holder I should buy since there are no bobbin case holder anymore for this model been manufactured? Please help me
This is a generic bobbin case - it fits many types of machines. If you search ‘bobbin case’ on amazon there are tons available.
Thank you so much!☺️🙏🏽
You are welcome!
Pls how can the machine pull the thread from the bubbin
When your threading it you hold the end of the tread and use the hand wheel and rotating it one revolution and it should grab the bobbin thread.
Hi, could you explain to me why my sewing machine (Singer 60-11) doesn't pick up the lower thread? I'm going crazy, I tried everything (changing needle, changing thread, inserting upper and lower thread again and again.....) thanks!!!!!
Adjust the tension - if that doesn’t help you likely have a timing issue. There are some great TH-cam videos on how to fix that
Can I fix the twin needle to this ?
Hello, how many layers of canvas can this machine sew through? I'd like to use it for light sail repairs. Would a 401a be better for this? Thanks!
It might do a few (3-4) layers of canvas, but a heavier machine is always better for heavy fabrics
@@RedBarnHomestead thank you for the fast reply! Is the 401a considered a heavier machine or merely a different model with similar capabilities?
Is there a specific needle type that you need?
Needle type depends on what you’re sewing - there is no different needle for this specific machine

I can - it’s pretty simple, there’s a little screw beside the needle - turn that to loosen until the needle comes out and replace with new needle then tighten the screw.
It looks like you are missing the needle clamp thread guide?
This machine doesn’t have one - it has been removed.

Why is my machine skipping stitches when sewing on knits? I have changed my needle to correct ball point needle, but it still skips.
Only on knits? May be a tension issue.
Yes, only on knits. It used to sew on knits.

It gets put on the upper peg, undo the clutch, and fill it.

40+ years old now.
