  • A severely underrated Beatles tune. One of dozens of Beatle album tracks that could've been a hit single.
I LOVE this song. Something about it brings tremendous joy. The chiming Rickenbacker, Paul's motown-esque melody and thundering bass chords, Ringo's rat-a-tat drumming. Not a single song didn't get 1500% effort in 1964.
Also, doesn't that riff sound remarkably like The Byrds' cover of "Mr. Tambourine Man"? When anyone tries to underemphasize the influence of The Beatles, let this be another example. They basically invented folk rock.
    Instruments:
    - Rhythm Guitar: Gibson J-160E Custom Shop 1962 Reissue (Pyramid .13 flats)
    - Lead Guitar: 2018 Rickenbacker 360-12c63 (Pyramid .11 flats)
    - Bass: 2020 Hofner Contemporary Series (Labella Beatle Bass flatwound strings)
    - Drums: Ludwig Black Oyster Pearl 1969 No. 980 Super Classic 9x13 / 16x16 / 14x22

    - Cad Audio Stage7 7-Piece Drum Microphones
    - MXL V250 Condenser Mic
    - Shure SM57
    - Recorded and mixed with PreSonus Studio One
    - Beatles Drop-T #4 drumhead courtesy of Russ Lease (beatlesuits.com)
    - Track assembled in Audacity

I often think that George's opening riff was the inspiration for Roger McGuinn's 'Mr Tambourine Man' introduction. They are similar when you listen to the side by side. It was around this time The Byrds really starting digging The Beatles. Agreed.

A perfect playing of the song. Thanks for uploading. It's always a joy to revisit these songs by listening to and watching you play them. This and "Eight Days a Week" simply made the "Beatles VI" album. And since you just played them you know they were of the same mood and feel. George's guitar was still important to the Beatle sound, and the music was simple, but perfect. I'm glad you can recognize the pure joy this song could have brought to teens listening to it back then. You have great insight. Now, I'm going to listen again.

Wow, this is fantastic! This song is a Beatles deep cut that somehow I missed the first time around. In North America, it was released on the Beatles VI album, which I never owned, but lots of my friends did. What You're Doing never got as much attention as other tracks on the same album, such as Eight Days a Week, Bad Boy, I Don't Want to Spoil the Party, etc. That's a mystery to me, since this is a wonderful song that is probably one of the templates for all of the melodic, jingle-jangle guitar pop that followed it, up until this day. Thank you for showcasing this song...great job!

This and "Eight Days a Week" were the 2 songs on "Beatles VI" that I played over and over. Two fantastic songs on an otherwise disappointing album. The cool thing about this song on the US album was that while extreme echo was used on the right channel, the left channel was basically left raw. By listening to just that channel I could pretty much hear what it sounded like in the studio as it was being performed live. It actually helped prepare me for a job later as an engineer at a record company.

Even Mr. Moonlight has that cool bolero stuff and No Reply has a super cool drum arrangement that shifts gears several times just on the verses. The vocals are probably the most memorable parts of Baby's in Black and Spoil the Party but Kansas City is packed with cool guitar stuff. On the other hand, Rubber Soul and Revolver ... !

Lovely cover, as usual. The 12 string sounds gorgeous. However, for the last 40 years my ears have always heard an E major in the middle 8. And E major is there in the alternative takes. It perplexed me when I heard your E minor because it does work, but doesn't have the same melodic sense of movement that occurs in the ascent from the F sharp note in the Bm chord, to G in the G chord, to G sharp in E major, then the final step being the A in A major.
    Do you hear it?
Big respect from Cambridge UK. I'm loving all your covers!
OK...edit...having scrolled down to see what others think, and also am sensitive about correcting a fellow musician so I wanted to make damn sure...was led to an isolated track...and in the first middle 8 I hear a strong E major right on the first beat where its clearest. But then on the second middle 8 I'm hearing Em7 (pinkie playing 3rd fret B string). That is infuriating. They can't have it both ways. It's not right! 😂

I am amazed how much Reverb has taken over from eBay. I have a large collection of vintage Ludwig drums/hardware etc. It use to be very easy to find great deals on this stuff yet since COVID the availability has dropped dramatically. I hope to start posting my own Beatles videos for fun as well. Not sure how I am going to format it, yet I hope to make it fun for others to enjoy. You're doing an excellent job sharing your work. Keep having fun!
