I actually miss those days. The sounds and smells of the CH46 during vertreps. Standing midwatch. The liberty overseas, the sponsored trips we took to Paris, and Rome. I would do it all over again in a heartbeat. MS3/RP2(SW) Haber USS Concord AFS5 85-90 USS Prairie AD15 90-93
You missed me on the midwatch brother. I was deck division and it killed me. Being an MS on my AFS was killer work, not as bad as cranking, but still hard.
@@2000ViperGTSsubscribe i miss those days as an MS, I ran the Bake shop at night baking, and was DCPO during the day...but when we were on the cruises, I was always TAD as an 'SK' in charge of hold 3, levels 2&3 as a reefer rat. It was all great duty.
So sorry to hear that. What year was that? If you care to share any details, you are welcome to. I personally only did the UNREP side, but both are dangerous as can be. RIP SM2 Monroe-we have the watch.
I was on that cruise. I was in the EW office below the flight deck and heard the rotors shredding when the ch-46 crashed. I was friends with SM2 Bill Monroe. He was on the Signal bridge when a rotor shard pierced his heart.
@@2000ViperGTSsubscribe Was M div 83-86. Bill was an extremely friendly and popular ship mate. If you went topside (not during flight ops) he was the kind of guy that would talk to you and explain what was going on. Honestly believe at least 90% of crew knew this guy We did the vertrep and the pilot got lazy and started short cuts over the bridge. One time he missed and crashed. A shipmate (can't recall his name) was there and tried to save him but couldn't. We ended up in Naples for a month for repairs. I remember the shipmate getting an ribbon for his attempt to save Bill. It was the only time I ever recalled the crew clapping etc during an awards ceremony.
Are you on the San Diego Facebook forum? I attend some of the reunions too. If it okay, for me to post this on our private AFS-6 forum? What is your name if you do not mind. Gary @@csc115
Was a Flight Deck LSE on Iwo Jima in the early 70's and remember Vertreps well. Fast pace and challenging. Combat Cargo had to get the loads moved as soon as I would get them dropped on deck and another bird would be on the way...
That's a job I didn't do. I was on one of the UNREP stations doing the handling or the sound powered phones with hand paddles :-) This was my cruise but a shipmate gave it to me to upload.

@@garyhaber333 The bake shop night baker was good to know to get a free handout-haha. I remember, across from the galley on the STB side.
I was on both MARG 2-85 and 1-88 on Iwo Jima. Lest we forget our fallen comrade, SM2 Bill Monroe who was killed during a VERTREP accident.

I miss those days of sitting one deck down in fire surpression mode hoping that all goes well so I was not activated.
