- I go over some of the differences I notice between the PRS S2 and PRS Core guitars.

Good of PRS to finally come out with a line of American guitars that are no-bling, plain woods, etc., but with all the quality of a PRS build.
My fav/main guitar is a PRS satin S2 and it is PERFECT. Best guitar I’ve ever played
What's so good about the satin? Is it a semi-hollow?
@@Hexspa satin necks are a different finish, they are smoother and less sticky than a gloss neck. Some people think satin looks or feels cheap, while some people love it. It doesn't have anything to do with a body being solid or hollow.
@@heyou429 I just got one in Antique White, pretty much as fresh off the presses as you can think (made late Feb 21). It feels different, even from other “satin” guitars, but not cheap, already love it!
I have to say my Tremonte SE is the best playing guitar I have. So, I'm excited to get my new S2 this week!

Love your videos! Just thought I'd point out two things:
1. Glue: it's not just the opinion of luthiers that glued joints are just as strong as a single piece. All modern wood glues (and even most grades of hide glue) dry stronger than the wood itself. In virtually every test performed over the years, whether by the glue manufacturers or independently, the wood _around_ the joint fails long before the glue does. It's incredibly rare to find a joint where the glue itself failed, and those rare failures are almost always due to "unusual" circumstances (high heat, etc.) In everyday usage, it will never be an issue.
I'd actually argue that PRS's scarf joint method is slightly _stronger_ than the "one piece" method. This is because, once you carve the tilt into the headstock, you're exposing end grain; this means the entire headstock is grain runout. By gluing on a piece of straight-cut wood, it eliminates that grain runout, which is technically strong. I say "technically", because PRS purposely designed his headstock to be far stronger than what was previously common (ie, Gibson and Epiphone.) I don't think most people would argue that the Gibson headstock is a notorious weak point, and a big part of that has to do with the severe grain runout due to the angle of the headstock. While most people think a scarf joint would be "cheaper", it's actually a stronger joint _as long as it's done properly_ (and not all are.)
If you're interested (or just really bored ;) ) there are tons of videos on TH-cam showing the strength of modern woodworking glues.
2. Pots: The vast majority of the "big three" pot brands (Alpha, Bourns and CTS) are all made in Taiwan now, and have been for years. Bourns and CTS did at one point also have factories in Mexico, although I _think_ CTS closed theirs (I could be mistaken about that.) _Very_ few pots are made in the US anymore, regardless of brand. I know you don't like Alpha pots, but in 20 years of repairing guitars, I've actually found them to be the most bulletproof! Of course, each brand tends to have a couple different grades, but the dirt-cheap Bourns are no better than the bottom-level Alphas (in fact, I've accidentally broken or cooked more Bourns pots than any others, and I stopped using them because a lot of them are just fragile.) The "nicer" Alpha pots (such as the brass-sleeved that StewMac carries) are fantastic and great for people who don't want super-loose controls, and they're also pretty common on a _lot_ of amps (even some very expensive boutique ones.) I think Alpha gained a bad rep back in the 80's simply because they weren't as good then and they tended to be installed on awful import guitars; most of the currently made Alphas are great pots, and I've noticed they've started using some of the brass-sleeved ones on the Squier Vintage Modified and Classic Vibe guitars too. If they have one downside it's that they're a _little_ stiffer than others, but that's also why a lot of the amp manufacturers like them (they're still _smooth_, just not as free-spinning.)
At any rate, I just thought I'd toss that out there. I'm not entirely sure if PRS is actually using US-made pots these days, although I don't think it matters all that much: all of the pot manufacturers are big international companies that have parts made all over the world for them. Each brand has their own super cheap range, and then the nicer stuff, and as long as the controls work properly and feel good to the player, there's no need to go swapping stuff out "just because" anymore...well, with perhaps the exception of those awful sheet metal box toggle switches. Those are still pretty awful! ;)

Nice review. I bought a solid S2 singlecut about 6 months ago, and loving it.
A very well done review my man ! I'll tell ya i have an S2 singlecut and played in a show on a ball diamond, and this guitar was the only one that not only didn't go out of tune ( including a fender bass) but didn't warp by the extreme heat in the day and very cool change at night, not to mention the flying lime stone dust through out the whole entire show.
That being said I think Paul is right by saying their all amazing and well done instruments. I have SE's as well and their great. I have Fenders and Gib's as well but you can tell the pride and workmanship done, really comes into play and you can feel it in your hands.
I havn't tried much of their amps and love the gibson/marshall sound so i go with the marshall heads, but you can get what you want out of these and they will last. I also applaud PRS for adjusting and making their price points to all players out there instead of just people with deep pockets.

This video definitely helped me decide on getting an S2. I did consider a CE for a hot minute, but overall, super happy with my S2. Especially nowadays with DSP, modeling, profiling, and pickup technology... I feel I don't miss the nicer pickups. I got an upgraded tremolo and block for my s2 and it has amazing sustain comparable to a full core.
Having owned both PRS core and S2 models, I agree concerning the wood selections. I was suprised to see that nice of a top on the S2 you demonstrated.

beyond that, multi-piece necks are stronger generally as well. We all know Gibson SGs and LPs are notoriously bad for breaking at the nut. You glue those back together, they will never break at that spot again. Clean, good cuts instead of just glueing after sanding are an improved version of that in a way. That 3 piece glued and joined neck will be more structurally stable than one solid piece with tips glued on where no force is applied. The strongest necks I've ever seen on any guitars are all bolt on 5-7 piece necks.
DCC92 multi piece in a vertical fashion is indeed a more stable neck. not really stronger against breaks, but certainly more stable against any sort of warping, as all the pieces wouldn't be trying to move in the same way.. but in the way they've pieced these necks together, there's really no justification to call it better.
I'm not that worried about it either way, but it's certainly not better.
I know someone who had his ES-335 break at the same spot maybe like three times!
Agreed...people always rag on a “scarf” joint but I have never seen an old charvel or jackson etc with a broken neck...there must be some kinda science to it !!!!!!!

I'm actually surprised here. Basic SE have the think neck with exception of 245 and certain signature models. I would guess thin outsells all other patterns? I have slightly shorter fingers but my hand size is average. I tend to gravitate towards thinner but can get along fine with any neck. But we are 5 years on now. What are the sales now? And have they offered thin?
I heard the Mira was discontinued but have also heard players say the Mira is magical? I'm so confused!

Great job on this video and the SE video, which cleared up some questions I had about my SE245. Since you like the G&B pickups (me too) try this: split the coils so pull-pots can select parallel or series wiring of either pickup. This really makes the guitar more versatile - 8 combinations. I use the neck PU in parallel most often. And yes, I see some fret wear already but not enough to be a problem. The S2 uses the harder fret wire of the core Paul Reed Smith, right? Thanks!
I was excited for this video, I love my s2 cu 24 (although you are totally right about the washed out tops). Got mine brand new for $1050.00 so really can't complain, but I guess I just found out where they saved their money!

Great video! I have a couple of questions though. I have a 2017 S2 Vela which I bought second hand for the bargain price of £700 (I'm in the UK) and that's the cost of an SE here. My Vela definitely has a one piece neck ( I just checked after watching your video). Have they made any changes since you made this video? I'm guessing that even though the Vela doesn't have the 85-15 s pick-ups that the d-type and strala are from the same company? Thanks for your time.

I have that same exact guitar and I love it. Such a versatile guitar. Eventually, I'll replace the pickups, harness and pots with the American replacements, but it still sounds pretty good as is. Now, I just need a CE-24 and I'll have all the tonal possibilities I need. The top of my S2 is also quite nice. Almost as nice as this one
Awesome video. Always insightful, l believe the S2 line have the#7 pu with alnico 4 mags, they are different from the SE pu. l don't know if it would sound significantly different. But they are advertised as unique to the S2 line. Love all your videos.
I really enjoy your PRS videos. I own 3 PRS guitars and 1 Paul Reed Smith. What do you know about the new SE models that have the Paul Reed Smith signature on them? Did Paul buy a Korean factory to be able to place his signature or is there no difference? Phil McNight, great review! Love all your work. Just one question are you sure that the S2 uses the same pickups as the SE? I did a side by side comparison in a large music store and they seem like different pickups to me. Am I hearing things?
+Oscar Muhammad They both use G&B pick ups but some S2 models use the same style pick and other use different pick ups. so they should sound close, but be different. I think the only Pick both SE and S2 share are the SE245 pick ups that some of the two models have.
I have an S2 Standard 24 Satin, and it's the best guitar I've ever owned, throughout the 20 years I've been playing.

I have both an SE Custom 24 and a first generation S2 Custom 24. I have to be honest here, the sound is much better on the S2, there's no comparison at all. S2 sound's louder and clearer.
how about the new 85/15 s pickups they use for the s2's now? is it the same as the 2017 se's?

I recently bought an S2 that actually looks very similar to the one in this video, and that guitar has become my baby! (I own 12 guitars). Let me give you advice and say that an S2 is certainly a guitar you want! You'll enjoy the quality, tone, and feel. Any complaints, like the back covers sticking out, really don't bother you once you realize how great a guitar it is in comparison to others in the price range or higher. And he's right, that guitar certainly has the best neck and frets I've ever played.
Cheers for this Phil, I have an S2 semi hollow custom 22, took cover off the controls and they said made in Korea as opposed to made in China... When I bought it I thought I may swap out the Korean parts, but to be honest I am happy with them (also have a very high end core PRS) The S2 just feels like it wants to work hard like a good work horse..

The sound of the pickups on the Paul are WAY better than on the PRS. I mean vastly better. Pretty blown away to hear that in the demo.
Phil whats the differance between a S2 24 and the new CE24?
So I actually went and bought my 1st real electric guitar after watching this. PRS S2 single cut. If you can believe it, it actually has an even nicer top that that one. Got real lucky I guess. Love the guitar, it feels and sounds great. Ill be keeping this one for sure.
Great job on both videos. I'm waiting for NAMM to buy. Torn between the new CE24 now and an S2 satin. I really want the satin neck back but need to have it come under 1500 or so. Again great vids really helped this American hss strat owner who hates his epiphone plus top pro garbage.
Startled Frog Media I traded my gibson studio deluxe in on an S2 satin finish , I think it was my better decisions , the S2 just feels , sounds and tunes bettet
Is it a PRS Santana with stoptail near the window? I wonder are this classic doublecuts well balanced if compared to core body shapes? I mean neck bows down when you stand because of the same horns length.
I saw your video on the CE 24 and it sounded like the CE was a better deal than the Core. Give the price difference is only about $500 between the CE and the S2 would the CE be the right place to start if you wanted to get a PRS?

Great info here. I own an SE, this same S2 Semi Hollow, and a Core. I agree with your assessments and, too, believe these are a way for PRS to sell guitars out of tops that don't make the cut for the Core line. Great guitars for people who want USA PRS quality but aren't fussy about curly tops.
Curious about the pickups, though, because they have the same names as the USA pickups. Are these Korean #7 pickups anything like the USA #7 pickups? I'm guessing not as they seem muddy to me.
S designation at end of numbers. The USA in house made are just better. Whatever MOJO they do in Maryland is noticeable.

Just one question, is the Pattern Regular the same thickness or slightly less than a 50's Gibson? I actually have small hands but cannot stand small necks for some reasons. I played a PRS once (a McCarty) and the neck was too thin.

I hope I'm not too late answering, but the regular pattern is slightly thinner than the neck on my Gibson lp 50s tribute. However, it is a C, while the Gibson shape is a D, I also like thick necks, and I find that I can go thinner with a C than a D because of the shape. Overall, the regular pattern is a nice chunky neck, thick than medium. Not huge, but certainly not slim. Hope that helps.

Hey Philip, thanks for the great and detailed walkthrough. Question: I have a Custom 24 S2 (I play it on my channel btw), and I have been thinking about upgrading the pickups to US ones. Right now there's a local deal for an American pair of HFS/Vintage Bass $200. Is the difference between the S2 and US version of these pickups big enough to warrant this upgrade? I know I love the pickup type since it has been used to record countless of records that I love, but I don't know about the difference.
+lordgraga I have been thinking about swapping the picks ups in my S2 since the day I bought it. I also like them a lot and just have a itch to see if they can be improved. The only thing I can tell you is the pick ups in the S2 have a full bass response and sound huge. If you got to the USA pick ups you mentioned you will get more clarity and mids but loose a little of that fullness. So it will not be the same sound, but better now. It will be a very good but different sound.

the CE's on average are $500. more than the S2's. CE's = $2,000. and the S2's = $1,400 to $1,500.

I went with the SE semi-hollow at half the price. Plus the color combinations weren't available on the S2. I wanted a natural mahogany back/neck and the S2's I look at were all painted.

Since you switched from the Core back to the S2 but mentioned it still sounds like an SE, have you changed the pick ups to match the core setup? If you haven’t, what are your thoughts about doing such a mod?

So the s2 term n pickups are made over seas, but I'm lookin at a Starla which has a bigsby n some kind of special pickups that are unique to the Starla, does anyone know where those are made?

What's special about them is that they're still proud about the S2's, it's still a gorgeous look

Look at the style of the S2 singlecut antique white with the pick guard, it looks amazing, especially when Jon Foreman from switchfoot used the old model Starla with that colour and put the NF3 pickups on it

I bought a S2 Mira in white because I really like the more traditional look (sort of like a Les Paul DC Special) but it has the quality of a PRS. This is the third PRS I've owned (I sold the other two almost immediately) and it's the only one I bonded with right away.
I don't think the pickups are the same as the SE. The description at the PRS site is different and PRS state that the pickups are built to the same specs (magnets, wire and insulation etc) and constructed identically (no. of turns and testing etc) to the USA #7 pickups. Apparently they had the Korean manufacturer built multiple prototypes which they tested until they were happy that the sound was more or less identical to the USA pickups.
The new PRS SE Custom 24 Limited Edition now says Paul Red Smith on the head stock...Nice looking guitar in cherry sunburst. . On sale at Guitar Center now for $699.00. I am tempted but already have a ..Les Paul , 2 Strats, a Tele and Ibanez oh..and 2 Acoustics...Just what I need ANOTHER GUITAR...
Well, the thing that killed it is the neck. I have small hands and I just can't play thick chunky necks. Hell, I even like the 24.75 scale length necks because the frets are closer together, but I find that maybe a little too close at the 19th through the 24th fret, so the 25 inch scale is what got me interested in the Paul Reed Smith guitars. I'm going to go with the SE because of the thin pattern neck.
what is the difference between the 10 top and regular paul reed smith, i got a custom 24 with floyd that cost me 2800 but the 10 top would be 3400 or around there. Is it a much better instrument or more detail into something or is it just the wood selection? surprisingly i had to send it back now because it had some defects like finish inperfection like sand paper marks on the neck near the joint with the body, a screw or the tuning peg a little crooked and not screwed all the way in and the lacker chipped a little near the volume knob some other things, strange to see those things in a Paul Reed Smith with all their reputation.. Waiting to see what they tell me when they get it.. i wonder if its because is not a 10 top and didnt go through the same quality checks..

I'm a skinny-ish guy myself and I can say that I like the pattern regular necks more than the pattern thin. As of right now, I like the feel of my PRS S2 Vela more than my CE24 neck...partly because the neck is so close to my Schecter Blackjack S-1's neck.
Just found this because I bought a pre se245 soapbar from 2013. I wonder if these guitars are like gibson led paul guitars when the neck gets broken off they sound 10x better than new conditioned guitar
Ive been a carpenter for years and i can tell you glue joints are way stronger than the wood its self. Also makes the wood more stable.

S2 is an interesting concept and really boils down to the player's priority/preference. Seems the divide here is either build quality, or hardware quality - because it's an electric guitar, I would personally prefer upgraded hardware with a build quality of an SE (since SE is still quite good...), rather than the build quality of a core, with the hardware of an SE. Almost $2,000 for SE hardware is a rough pill to swallow for me, but I also get that people would prefer the "made in America" stamp and are willing to upgrade their own components (though some of the PRS pickup sets are ungodly expensive lol). I wonder if any of this has changed in the S2 line since this video was made.
What are the main differences between S2's and CE's?
What's the difference in the custom 24 and standard 24, I'm going to buy one later this week , just wondered if the extra 400 for the custom is worth it, seems like they have the same hardware but just the mapletop and stain is different
Standard is all mahogany and the Custom has a maple cap.
Another point you could have mentioned would be the birds or dots on the S2's are not as ornate as the Core line. Otherwise, thanks for the video!

Best guitar I’ve ever bought. Tuning was impeccable and the quality destroys Gibson. Sold a 2019 les Paul and American professional Stratocaster. It’s a keeper and zero need to buy another

Same pickups, at least according to this video... If that's the case can't see how the S2 is "leaps and bounds" better in stock format. I will say some of the NEW se guitars are ridiculously priced. But get a used one for three fiddy and what a deal. My two cents.
S2s are miles better than SEs before 2017, the new SEs though are very very impressive, but S2s are a no brainer for 200$ more
@@erichancock4618 Made in America vs Korea makes a huge difference. Better woods, quality and the S2 has locking tuners.
My SE has the Paul Reed Smith script on the headstock. Its the Tremonti.
I find them to be nice looking guitars, thing is sustain not maybe a focus point by PRS on any of the make or style of guitar seem to be not a part of there build.
Not that I mean that i don't like that just what i have always noticed there are sustain guitars and then none sustain guitar. Even acoustic guitars are built on this idea, classical guitars less sustain where as steel string acoustics tend to have longer sustain. Classical Flamenco guitars have very short sustain, i often think Fender strats and tele are like style of sustain that is similar to classical guitars. listening to PRS's i often think of them falling between Flamenco and classical some were.
Hello Phillip ,great video I have an S2 Paul Reed Smith and love it ,My "Go To " Guitar !! I also have an SE standard in Camo that I upgraded with Duncan 59's.There is a couple of questions I have, as I have the one with the tremolo . What is the difference between the block in the S2 as compared to a Core model? I also see that Paul Reed Smith re-introduced the CE series at a very competitive price point. They look very S2 ish to ME. Is there any way You could do a vid comparing the old CE's vs. the new CE's?-Johnny B!! Wesley Chapel Fl.
The block on the core is brass. The new CE is in the core line but will have some parts shared with the S2. I will do some reviews in late Jan, February

I own and absolutely love my Zach Myers guitar. When it came to pull the trigger on which guitar I was going to buy, it was between the Zach Myers and the S2 Singlecut. Played the same riffs in the same order through a PRS Archon 25 and to me personally, the Zach Myers was it. Not knocking the S2 Singlecut, but comparatively speaking, it was a little too restrained and held back. The Zach Myers did what I wanted, which is heavier rock that leaned toward metal a little better than the S2 Singlecut. I really liked the S2 clean and crunch sounds, as well as coil split tones, but even were I not looking at bang for the buck, I still would've walked out with the Zach Myers. It's only a matter of time before we get the Trampas Green I originally wanted, and before it comes home and gets hot rodded. If I were to get an S2, it'd probably be the Custom 24 or the Custom 22 Semi Hollow, definitely wasn't feeling the Singlecut though.
Very good and interesting review. If I find a second hand, for an interesting price. I will buy one, and probably change the electronics, 'couse I'm not really a fan of those Korean pups. Wish you good luck and success.

That's really strange that the back cavity covers aren't recessed. Even the SEs and many far Eastern guitars recess theirs. I wonder what the reasoning behind it is. Maybe it saves money, but it seems like such a small thing.
I have a S2 Custom 24, arguably the best sounding, best playing (the rounded over edges are fantastic and no string buzz), has the best coil split, of all the guitars I have, it even sounds quite good through the crappiest of amps. It has it all, well almost all, as for me, the PRS has no soul. I just can't connect with it, I don't get inspired. But it sounds great. Go figure!
Is changing a korean trem system to a USA core model trem system easy?

It's true. Some of the cheaper guitars sound dead. No sympathetic vibration or slight ring at the end. Not even dead in a good way but just flat like old coffee. These definitely seem to have that spark.
