    the fact that a 150$ phone can handle some ps2 emulation pretty well is damn impressive

      @@pepito69$50-$65 used on eBay. Snapdragon 845.
      Personally, find a phone with a Snapdragon 865 used for $90-$135 instead, especially if it's one you can oc the GPU as the 865 overclocked can match a Snapdragon 888 and even beat it some depending on what specific device you compare it to.

    • @vanguard812-vf7hr
      @vanguard812-vf7hr ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most of the used Snapdragon 845 phones are being sold near $80 or even lower. 30 USD would be a huge steal.
      845 is still faster than the G99. You can try setup Note 9 + pc monitor. Emulator performance takes a small hit but still score 415k pts.
      Issue with MediaTek is optimization. Dimensity 900 is suppose to be faster but struggle to keep up with SD 845 from what I read.
      It is nice to see G99 doing good since power consumption is lower than the SD 845

    Hey everyone! A few notes that I didn't include in the video:
    The phone's screen is set to 60Hz for all of the footage.
    GC emulation did not have widescreen hacks enabled (you can see the footage is stretched).
    PS2 emulation DID have widescreen hacks enabled, force of habit but widescreen hacks can add some issues to emulation.
    The KTR1 is passively cooled with a vapor chamber unlike the Poco M5 I used for testing. However, I did do a lot of thermal tests off-camera to see if the device was thermal throttling and it was actually doing very well. In addition, I used a Razer phone cooler to stabilize the temperature but found I didn't need it during testing so I didn't bother to use it anymore. The core clocks are being pushed to the max that the phone allows which can be seen in the built-in performance tool of Android 12.

    I think it's also important to state that this is being made by one person and not a company, so quality control could be a big issue. Also if you need to refund or have any issues, again you are dealing with a single person.

    Very good video! I am pretty sure I am going to preorder the KTR1 when Nil gets the payment snafu fixed up. I like the power to size ratio. I had the Odin Lite, and I never brought it anywhere due to its size.

    • @retrotechdad
      @retrotechdad  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think the power to size ratio is going to be a big driver for a lot of potential buyers!

    • @bear532
      @bear532 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@retrotechdadyeah that’s why I preordered mine months ago. I really wanted something pocketable I can take with me that can handle some “newer” systems. While I love snes, most retro games have not aged that well. Plus, that screen. Oh man that screen. 4.5”, 3:2, AND 1080p, that’s perfect for me. I find 3.5” screens a bit too small and the display is perfect for pokemon gba emulation which I have a feeling I’m going to be playing a lot of lol. If the ktr1 was any bigger, I wouldn’t have bought it. While the rg405m is a sweet device, the screen resolution is frankly too low. The retroid pocket is a bit too chunky. Overall, this is going to be the king of pocketable handhelds which pairs perfectly with a steamdeck.

    I was about to complain about how the KTR1 sticks are positioned differently on the print out than the thumbnail, but seeing that there are plans to have _both_ layouts purchasable, I'm happy that there'll be alternatives, because I *HATE* the asymmetrical stick design that so many devices are using these days. I like the RP3+, but Retroid drops a new devices so fast that it's hard to justify buying one knowing it'll be outdated before the new device smell wears off.

    Impressive! If I didn't already have an Odin base and RP3+ I would jump on this, my only gripe is the shoulder buttons or the lack of analog triggers for racing games, and I don't think it has video out which is kind of a bummer.
    I love the aspect ratio of this and also the variations for the dpad. Got a question what is the app that you use to see the cpu utilization etc? I'm using CPU float which is cool, but yours looks cooler!

      Great question, that is actually built right into Android 12 and it's something I've been waiting forever to be included! You can get it by enabling developer options and then heading under "Monitoring" and selecting the power monitor option. There is a choice to start the "Frame-Rate Monitor Tools".
      Unfortunately, I have found that not every device with Android 12+ will have it available despite it being a feature of the OS. I think it's up to the OEM allow the feature. 😭

      @retrotechdad  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's really a matter of preference, I enjoy both. I like having a dedicated device but also love being able to make use of the power available in most mobile devices (and hard to beat price to performance). There's some really good options for controller attachments like the Backbone controller I have linked in the description.

    thanks, what resolution did you play the games on? cause the KTR1 will be 1680x1080 so its possible it will have higher FPS then the phone that uses a higher resolution and needs more gpu power. Was it even possible for testing to lower the resolution? did you use widescreen hacks? that also uses more gpu power, cause more pixels are on screen, compared to the 3:2 display on the ktr1

    Tablet Redmi Pad has the same chipset as Poco M5, albeit with no headphone jack & no LTE. Suffice to say, Helio G99 is a good chipset for retro gaming emulation up till PSP & Dreamcast & I was surprised that it could emulate a few PS Vita & Switch games. I would rather up the notch to at least Dimensity 8000 series if I want to play PS2, GameCube and later systems.
