    My favorite thing about the Loch Ness Monster is that in 2005, a group of MIT researchers decided to try to map the lake and hunt Nessie, but they instead found a random common toad just hanging around at 325 feet down in the water. They have no clue how he got down there, why he would have swam so far down, and it left them baffled that he could even survive such water pressure. He swam off and was never seen again.

    The Kraken is something that seems so plausible to me. Squids aren't solitary, they hunt in packs of up to 20. Imagine 20 ten foot long squids writhing around your ship, their beaks tearing at its hull while hundreds of tentacles lash all around you. Easy to see how that story becomes a myth about massive tentacled monsters pulling down ships

    • @MM-jc7uv
      @MM-jc7uv 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +213

      The Kraken legend was probably just a big giant squid that sailors were unaware of at the time. It’s also common to over exaggerate/feed into the hype when retelling an encounter with something “mystical.” It’s definitely the most plausible one for sure

    • @Double_Jae

      The Kraken is one that's been proven to exist in that there really is a huge squid that lives in our deep oceans. Roughly 40 ft long at full grown size. They actually are solitary to my knowledge, and when they start to get old, they begin to move closer to the surface, and they can actually be found at the surface of the water just before dying. Whats even worse about them is that they have teeth in their suckers and have a beak that essentially has a tongue with teeth in it. Also, they're cannibals when times are desperate enough. The more you know.

    hey wendigoon, as someone who's lived in northern michigan my entire life, (and also grew up terrified of the dog man) i wanted to shed some light on why he's so popular. it isn't just that it's a spooky design.
    first, the dog man is only active every 7th year of a decade. second, he never, ever directly kills someone. all the references in the song of people/animals dying because it literally scares them to death. the appearance of the dog man is so blood curdlingly unnatural that it can literally make your heart stop. it's the idea that despite michigan's beautiful landscape, you can never really let your guard down or forget the unforgiving nature of... well, nature.

    When I was younger, I always went up to Michigan with my family to stay with my aunt and grandparents. My aunt always told me and my sister stories of the Dogman and I was always so interested in it, however we often made fun of it saying that in order to see the Dogman, you couldn't bring a wild life expert, had to get really drunk, and then make your camera really out of focus. I was really happy to see it on this list.

    Hi, Aussie here. I think the reason why the thylacine is on the iceberg is because although they're formally considered extinct, some people believe that they didn't completely die off and that there are still thylacines alive somewhere in the Tasmanian wilderness. Which makes them similar to more mythic cryptids like bigfoot or nessie.

    Funny thing about the dogman: In medieval times, people genuinely believed that people with dog heads were a thing. They were called cynocephali and showed up in a lot of bestiaries and old artwork. They weren't monsters, either: They were literally just humans, wearing clothes and having jobs and stuff, except they had canine heads. Also I think one of them was a Catholic saint, or something like that. Wild stuff.

    • @lilcotorro
      @lilcotorro 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +167

      Yes! Though the myth of the dogmen actually go even farther back than the middle ages. The saint you mentioned is St Christopher. Another saint named St Augustine of Hippo also briefly talked about dogmen in one of his books "City of God". A short summary of it was: "Idk if they're real or not. If they are real, we need to observe whether they qualify more as a human or animal. If they show human rationality, they should be treat as human and allowed to be baptised."

    I grew up in Wyoming (specifically Douglas, the hometown of the Jackalope) and the jackalope means so much to me personally. The original jackalope mount was put on display in the LaBonte hotel but it was stolen years and years ago, they never caught the guy.
    Other fun 'facts' include:
    - the current hunting season for them is only June 31st between midnight and 2am
    - their milk is a powerful, sought-after aphrodisiac
    - it's illegal to bait them with whiskey (a favorite of theirs)
    - they can mimic human voices, mostly as self defense
    you can still get hunting licenses for them at the Douglas visitor's center. there are also multiple 10+ foot tall statues of jackalopes around town

      There's roughly 700 bodies held in collections and museums - I saw one of them today in Sydney's Australian Museum. They were fierce-looking predators.
      Worth noting that the most recent research has conceded that they are likely not extinct, or at least were still around in small numbers as recently as the early 2000s. Until we have clear trailcam footage or a more recent body / live specimen it will all be data and theorising, but it seems very likely that these guys are still hanging on somewhere deep in the Tasmanian wilderness.

    A) I just discovered this channel through the Disturbing Movie and Video game iceberg videos, and now, hearing you have a podcast with Cr1tikal, I'm most definitely checking that out. 2) Mothman was the cryptid that got me into cryptids. The other famous ones (Bigfoot, Nessie, Chupacabra, etc.) were cool, but Mothman was the one that made me go "That's fucking awesome". It's what really sold the appeal of cryptids to me. I wanna go to West Virginia just to visit Point Pleasant, and, as a Fallout fan, having him added into 76 was such a cool experience.

    Excellent video, but, as an Australian I feel the need to make a few corrections about the Thylacine. Firstly, it’s pronounced “Thylaseen” secondly, the Thylacine is likely on the list, not because it’s a weird extinct animal, but because after it’s extinction there were many sightings of the creature, and even today many people still believe that there are some out there still. But aside from that, great video!

    as someone who grew up in Tasmania, I heard a lot of stories from my dad and his mates about post extinction sightings of the thylacine that read like any other cryptid stories. driving down highway late at night and seeing a blurry shape that the swear was one of them sort of thing. It’s sort of became a local cryptid after it officially went extinct

    • @HeyJenkies
      @HeyJenkies 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +14

      Yes! Josh Gates (who is briefly mentioned) did an episode on his show Expedition Unknown searching for the Thylacine and there was a farmer who swore there was a whole family of them living on his property, with fairly compelling footage and everything. The “is It actually extinct?” Factor is what makes it a criptid imo

    The Jersey Devil scared me so bad as a kid, mainly because there was this island level from Poptropica, an online adventure game (for those who are unfamiliar). There was an island (each island had a different story/theme) that was all about Cryptids. It had the basics like Bigfoot, Nessie, and the Chupacabra. Then, it had you go to New Jersey to find proof of the Jersey Devil. It had you wander through the woods at night until you found an old abandoned house. You walked through the house, found nothing, but as you were leaving, a figure of the Jersey Devil staring at you through the window before you followed it outside and it flew off. All this to say that this cartoony picture of the Jersey Devil scared the shit out of child me, as well as many others my age 😂. It was my first introduction into cryptozoology and the Jersey Devil, and now, like 10+ years later, I still remember it fondly

    I had anxiety issues in high school when I was required to give presentations in drama class. To counter this issue I found if I talk about things that I found interesting, and felt like I was well informed about the subject, I did better. I went for the shock and awe presentations which included unusual sky fall, spontaneous human combustion, and some other odd subjects I can't remember. Finally the teacher took me aside after class one day and asked me to do something that wasn't off. At that point I did a presentation on Regiment 51, the all African American regiment that fought in the Civil War. That was a fun subject to cover in rural southern Tennessee in the 90s back when we still very much had racism. I grew up and became an archaeologist that is still very much interested in the paranormal. I laughed when you mentioned your school research.

    Hey Wendigoon, I was hoping you'd talk about this with the Jackalope because I haven't seen anyone bringing it up! I think it's a really plausible explanation for the origins of the cryptid! Shope papilloma virus is an infection rabbits can get and causes hornlike growths that come out of their head and mouth. It's pretty horrific and since sick rabbits tend to hide, I can imagine people only seeing glimpses of them and thinking they were rabbits with antlers. If you didn't know, now you know!
