    Regarding seam ripping- these quilts are made by stuffing down in and then sewing the squares in. If you rip seams as discussed around 6:00 in the video, you free down trapped by the seams. I did this to two CDT's, and noticed an ~15%-20% increase in loft. Also, pay attention to which quilt you are buying. Some of them have been overstuffed and come from the store with 25% more down inside.... which is why you see people opening them at Costco and letting them loft out before purchasing them.... looking for the super CDT's.

      i didn't know about the CDT with %25 more down, i will have to look more closely now. Thanks for the heads up on that!

    See 2 quilts together on their short side. Double your length and it would cover the whole hammock

    Like this idea, but how well does it breathe with the Tyvek cover? I've heard regular Tyvek traps moisture, but maybe the car cover type doesn't?

    • @GoOnAndGetOutdoors
      @GoOnAndGetOutdoors  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It breathes well, basically it cuts down on the wind and protects the quilt. It feels like a high quality shop towel material would be the best way to describe it.

    Looking online I find a lot of polypropylene car covers but not very many tyvek. Where did you get yours? Also how big of a piece of reflectix do you use? Thanks for this video.

    • @GoOnAndGetOutdoors
      @GoOnAndGetOutdoors  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I got mine from a yard sale but I'm sure any type of waterproof and breathable car cover will work well, it is mainly there to keep the quilts dry and cut down on the wind. Saying that there might be cheaper options from a fabric store or thrift stores for a better value. If you don't mind the noise making it from a full piece of tyvek would be a good option as well. I cut the reflectix to the size of the blanket so like 70 inches. After using the quilt i have found that without the reflectix I could go down to mid to low 20's comfortably for me. Hope this helps!

    Just to clarify, the part where you show it all in a compression sack, that is the entire system? Both down quilts and the tyvex cover?
    Do you know the total weight of the system?

    • @GoOnAndGetOutdoors
      @GoOnAndGetOutdoors  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes both quilts and the tyvek cover fit in that compression sack. The quilts compress better than the tyvek does so if you decide to not take the tyvek then the system will compress smaller. Not for sure of the weight however it seems to be close in comparison to my hammock gear incubator in weight.

    Thanks for the video. How large a piece of reflectix did you use? At what temperature do you add it ?

    • @GoOnAndGetOutdoors
      @GoOnAndGetOutdoors  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I used a piece 6 foot long and it comes in 2 foot width. With the single Costco quilt I will add it below 60 f, also I like to use it on windy nights as it helps more with the wind barrier.

    Hey there, thank you so much for your video. Super helpful. I have a couple quilts and have been working up the courage to sew them into under quilts.
    A couple questions: did you make the original quilt narrower? I saw some folks cut them into a 45" width or so. Also, where did you get your tyvek cloth? It looks grey in the video, I like it quite a bit more than bright white...
    Thank you!

    • @GoOnAndGetOutdoors
      @GoOnAndGetOutdoors  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Leticia I used one of the squares on the length sides and folded them over to make the channel for the suspension system. with the quilts size and weight it is I couldn't come up with a good enough reason to make it a different size. the tyvek cloth is part of a cheap car cover that a friend had laying around. with as cheap as they are I would just start sewing and experimenting with it. :)

    • @windwaker495
      @windwaker495 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Awesome Billy, thank you so much! I will start with leaving the width alone and folding the long sides over like you did. You're right, if I have trouble making it sit where it should at the original 60" width I can always redo one side, pushing the down in the baffles further towards the other side not to lose any, and just cut the excess cloth so it's the desired width and re-sew the folded edge.
      Sewing machine, here I come! Thanks a lot. You helped me take the plunge.

    I'm from Germany and i saw so many DIYs with the Costco throw. Nothing comparable here in Europe anywhere. So I asked my colleague that went to Chicago last week if he could bring me some (not knowing that Costco is members only).
    Now he is back and he could have gotten me some from BBB. If I just had seen your video 3 days earlier. :-( Worst timing.
    Seems like a good setup though. One reason more to visit the US again soon.

    • @GoOnAndGetOutdoors
      @GoOnAndGetOutdoors  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      theacme3 that is some bad timing. if you can get your hands on BBB coupons (even expired ones) then thay might help with the cost. Germany is on my lists of places to go so I'll bring a extra throw just incase :)

    • @theacme3
      @theacme3 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haha, good idea. But you will need that for your self here (if you go camping. It gets cold! ;-) )
      On my search for something comparable i yesterday found some interesting stuff on Amazon. Its a square, down sleepingbag with, so they claim, 800 fill down. "Aegismax envelope sleepingbag" 580g. +- 1pound 4 ounces
      Its 75 bugs and if you open it its 200 x 160 cm. Hmmm ,thats 80 x 63 in (that imperial system ...). If you cut it in half you end up with 63x40in which sounds perfect for an underquilt (or better two underquilts!) (if someone wnats to check that, there is also a slightly smaler version in grey. Look for the black one in large).
      I own one sleeping bag from aegismax allready (the green one, less than an pound and realy warm and well made). I feel kind of stupid to forget about them when using their stuff regularly. I will go for that, do two quilts and either combine them or lend on off to my gf.
      It just happens that i also got a pice of tyvac with silver coating around. It is exactly the size i need for the underquilt protector. I almost cut it a couple of days ago, but didnt.
      So, not so bad timing afterall :D

      theacme3 If it helps someone is selling Double Black Diamond down quilts on uk ebay for £15 in black. same size so not sure if the exact same as costco. You may want to check it out. I have ordered one today but waiting on it arriving so not sure of the quality yet. Cheers Mary McN

      Costco sells the double black diamond brand so the size should be the same and hopefully they have plenty for you :) I am hoping with the increased popularity of these will help with getting them online and for a good price globally so everyone can get their hands on them and get some more ideas out there.

    This is very helpful. Thank you for sharing. Can you explain why you rip out the cross seams? I have seen this on other tutorials as well, but I don't understand why. Thanks!

    • @GoOnAndGetOutdoors
      @GoOnAndGetOutdoors  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Patty Brown Patty Brown I have found by ripping the seams it seems to make more room for the down to loft in. It looks like it lofts %30 more from my tests. Also with each square seam that is just one less spot for the down to loft further. If you search for diy quilts you see how mist make channels instead of squares. hope I explained that good enough, I may make a video showing the difference with and without seam ripping.

    What's the weight of each piece (Quilt #1, Quilt #2, Tyvek shell)?

    • @GoOnAndGetOutdoors

      google says the quilts weigh 16.75 oz a piece, i think they really all feel the same. Ill try to get a scale and weigh it all up.

    I’m still confused did you use two costco quilts and attached them together or is it just one quilt?

    • @GoOnAndGetOutdoors
      @GoOnAndGetOutdoors  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wild West Productions I used 2 Costco quilts and attached using plastic snaps. For me if it's 45 degrees Fahrenheit and above I'll just take one, if it's colder than that I'll bring along the second one and double it up. They basically get stacked for extra insulation.

    Thanks for vid. Trying to get my wife out with hammocks but she wants warmth. Underquilts are scary expensive. Going this route for sure. Also have you thought about using the cheap car cover as a tarp. Again thanks this will male it possible

    • @GoOnAndGetOutdoors
      @GoOnAndGetOutdoors  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Armando Veloz thanks! I have found that putting the refletix in between the hammock and under quilt seems to help the most with my wife as she is a cold sleeper. As for using a car cover for a tarp I have not tried that, my only concern that it would absorb water and would be hard to dry off compared to silnylon. I learned how to sew and used ripstopbytheroll.com for a template/plans and got material there to make my tarp and I love it. Good luck with your ptoject!

    where do you get the reflectix, what size, and where do you put it?

    • @GoOnAndGetOutdoors
      @GoOnAndGetOutdoors  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I got it at my local home improvement store in the insulation section. I think they came in 24 and 48 inches in width and 24 ft in length. I just cut what fit my size best and ended up trimming some away. I put it in between the bottom of the hammock and above the underquilt.

      Cameron Davis I am 6'2" and my feet do hang over the underquilt. I will lay on my side or bend my knees to get them over the underquilt. I have a long hammock gear incubator that fits way better for my height. I would think that anyone under 6 foot the costco underquilt should fit well. My buddy has a simular setup with him being 5'9" fits with plenty of room in his.

      Cameron Davis I have a friend that is working on a setup to fully cover his whole hammock, I will post a video as soon as he gets that fished up. With you being the same height I would imagine a small sit pad under the feet might help the costco quilt setup work as they use with 3/4 underquilts. just a thought..

    • @GoOnAndGetOutdoors

      if you go to amazon and search for car cover it will pop up with all kinds of poly pro covers that are water resistant and wind resistant, most of them are grey and from 20 to 30 dollars for a cheap one. There is a lot of material so you could split it or make other items with it, very handy lightweight stuff.

    What is the name of the bed bath and beyond product? I'm looking through their website and I haven't been able to find it.
    I'm going camping in NC this weekend, expecting 25-35 degrees at night. I'm confused as to how many of the quilts you used to sleep at 0 degrees. Did you say that one quilt was good for 50 degrees?
    I also have a sleeping bag rated to 30 degrees and I am making the SOL survival blanket underquilt found here:
    th-cam.com/video/gN4eVKtsuqc/w-d-xo.html
    I'm trying to make sure that I have everything I need to be comfortable. Thanks!

    • @GoOnAndGetOutdoors
      @GoOnAndGetOutdoors  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was the Packable Down Throw Blanket from Bed Bath and Beyond, I just checked their site and found it is no longer sold online. It may be a seasonal thing so maybe the stores will have some still in stock. i did find the Premier Comfort Packable Down Alternative Throw Blanket at BBB www.bedbathandbeyond.com/store/product/premier-comfort-packable-down-alternative-throw-blanket/3306023?Keyword=packable+down+throw but i have yet to get my hands on this one.
      I was able to get one quilt down to 50 degrees or so and i used 2 quilts with refletix and tyvek cloth to block the wind to go to 0f. I would say if its just 2 quilts it should go to 30 give or take. Its all trial and error, but with a couple quilts and your 30 degree bag i would think you should have enough, but just incase you may want to be ready to wear your jacket or have a backup plan. I brought extra insulation until i found what my gear would do, i think thats been the best approach to it all.
      On my video of that trip th-cam.com/video/lC2zFkYEUNg/w-d-xo.html at the 7 minute mark is another example of the layering system that worked for my buddy Scott. Please let me know if you have any other questions or are able to let us know how your trip went. Stay warm and have fun!

      Scuba Trooper most stores have a tyvek car covers for around 20 dollops or so. I have recently found using the refletix did a great job of retaining the heat. After going that route I will not go out without refletix. Amazon also has good deals on genaric tyvek car covers.

    When you're making claims like this it's helpful to see the proof. Maybe do a trip video and bring a thermometer otherwise people could put themselves in danger attempting this.

      The link is also in the description as well here th-cam.com/video/lC2zFkYEUNg/w-d-xo.html. I also pointed out to have extra insulation when going camping in such cold conditions as I always like to stay on the safe side when keeping warm.
