    If a kid is this passionate or steadfast in some interest - it's better than not having an interest at all, having the parent force them into something, and so they should be rewarded. Some of the earliest interests we have are actually what we are meant to be doing.

      Parents are just trying to do the best thing for their kids. Middle-upper class kids may not always be appreciative of the things theyre given, but thats cuz theyre young and dont understand the power of such opportunities. That was the case for me, learning the piano felt like a pointless chore, and there were many many times I wanted to quit. But now, its one of the best things thats happened to me.

    I always wanted the violin when I was younger. I kept begging for it. My parents were not that supportive. Finally at age 16 my mom bought me one but my dad did not help me find a music instructor. I found one myself in a high school department but the music instructor discouraged me to play it coz it sounds like a squeaking mouse. He told me to practice bass guitar instead. There were no smartphones at that time. I was discouraged and eventually got busy in college . After dad died, I was 18 at that time, I opened my violin case again it smelt of old pine wood and childhood dreams. I knew it was already late as I had to work three jobs and barely had sleep. 2015, my bf broke off the wedding and I had to sell everything I owned.. I had to sell my violin..my dream. I moved to another city to restructure my life again. Now im 34, my childhood dream is somewhere in the stars and I hope to give it to my child one day and do everything to keep that dream alive.

    • @vanessatrevs
      @vanessatrevs 3 ปีที่แล้ว +68

      @mj belanger because adults have priorities, we pay bills and stuff, we carry on, some have to work three jobs to stay alive, there's simply no room for practice and when you are too exhausted, you just wanna rest. Depends on your circumstance.. If you are a rich adult, you can do whatever u want. When you have no support and have little resources to support your child's dreams, then it's better to give them that dream.. Their success is also your success.

    When he said “it’s not that I can’t afford a violin “ .. I was witnessing a parent in the hardest position in life. Telling your child you can’t give them what they want is the hardest thing in life as a parent after having to discipline them. Parenting is very hard ..

  • @selinaou
    @selinaou 3 ปีที่แล้ว +36

    It breaks my heart to see this passionate yet underprivileged child not afford a real violin. I bet she would learn faster than anyone else once she had the ability to earn money when growing up. If I were rich, I would befriend her and support her, even buying her a real violin as a gift. (I do music, like piano and singing, though my family isn't that rich either, but at least I'm in better conditions than her, much to my parents' sacrifices therefore I'm more grateful and ambitious). I even dream of helping kids like her when I succeed. I'm turning 18 next month, and this will be the chance for me to work harder, in order to earn more money to gain more ability to donate to the poor and the needy because I cannot stand watching them starve and freeze to death!!!

I did find this just as heartwarming as I found the book.

    It's true that children's passions can be short-lived but a musical instrument can always be resold and soul nurtured is never a waste of money. Meanwhile, this mockup is a very clever training tool. Lol, my 'first guitar' was made by the neighbor boy who was 7 (and I was 5) out of boards, nails, and string. Imagination is a strong power.

    I can understand the possibilities of that money going to waste or being used for food instead, but when young children show interest in something, that isn't harmful, it should be supported and not ignored. Rewarding the child with the opportunity to possibly take their interests to the next level will greatly help the child in the future and open up more paths for them. Just having the opportunity to know whether or not it's what the child would like to do in the future is key; instead of being left in the unknown full with regrets when they grow up.

    • @sollie2441
      @sollie2441 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s not that simple. China’s minimum wage is nothing like America’s- 0.94/hour is the legal minimum wage. The father **is** supporting his daughter as best as he can- finding programs that she’s eligible for so she can continue pursuing music and so she can borrow an instrument. He’s not ignoring it at all. For low income families, it’s not really possible to support all their kids interests or passions when there are other priorities.
