    Thank for the tip. I always have used Pledge Future for a base for oil washes, decals, and as an additional protective coat before a final flat coat. I will be using this right away.

    This has been a staple on movies for years for aging down sets. As well as a wash, you can tint the future, apply it as you want and then use windex or ammonia to remove. Spritz the ammonia or windex and model the color off with a rag or cheesecloth. Great effect and very controllable.

    I have been using Future for models for over 20 years. Works great for car, airplane or what ever clear parts need to be coated to protect them. Also when I make a wash I use Future, gouache paint, tiny bit of water,1 drop of soap in a small jar like yours. It works great, I try and use it as a pin wash, on big models when you spread it out it does not always look great. Looking forward to seeing you use it on more of your figures.

    This is by far the easiest wash ever,thanks for posting,easier than, and cheaper than an oil wash

    Any acrylic floor polish works. It's all the same. I use this cheap stuff called Quick Shine and it works great. People get too caught up with having to have Pledge/Future. There are tons of stuff in model making that you can cheaply substitute to finish your model.

      @@TheDog951 Material safety data sheet from the mfg will say acrylic. My old bottle of Future says acrylic in the fine print on the bottle.

    You can mix any acrylic paint or ink with it. You can apply an acrylic wash over acrylic paint without issue. Although oil or enamel washes tend to work better over larger surfaces.

    Hard to say since it depends on the project. While you can slather on the Magic Wash you still have the option of applying it with more precision. The Quickshade might be more effective for overall shading, but it's a crude method.

  • @ThePaintingClinic
    @ThePaintingClinic  11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I suppose it will protect. I don't do the gloss varnish then flat varnish bit because you sacrifice detail for questionable extra protection. Yes you can airbrush it, but you have to clean it out well afterwards just like any varnish.

    I've been informed Pledge is getting rebranded again. They are getting rid of the "Future" logo and it will now be know as Pledge FloorCare Multi-Surface Finish or Pledge Wood FloorCare Wood Finish. The product itself will remain the same.

    Trying to find this product on shelves and wasn't able too. I did find Pledge Floor Care, Multi-surface | Finish. Doing some searches online, many people are wondering if this is the same thing. And according to some who contacted SC Johnson, it is the same product. Others are saying "close but not the same". I haven't tried it yet, but will be getting some as a reducer for my paints in my airbrush.

    The Pledge makes the wash easier, but not perfect in all situations. For example, like any standard wash it doesn't work well on flat surfaces. The main benefits is that you don't have to worry about tidemarks and since it slows the dry time you can use a damp brush to clean it off the surfaces where you don't want it.

  • @jimrogers2089

    Great video. I know this is an older one, but I am new to the hobby.
    I actually am into scale modeling more than miniatures and was curious if you have tried this on models (styrene plastic).
    When I make my washes (water, acrylic paint, bit of dish detergent) I apply a gloss coat first to help the wash use capillary action in panel lines and to be able to wipe off excess wash without it staining the paint, then matte coat when done. If this can be used on scale models, would same technique work.
    Also, it seems I read once that you could mix something with pledge future and make a Transparent window tint. I already dip my canopies in pledge and it works wonders. I am building an '89 AMT Batmobile kit and am looking for best way to tint the windshield transparent black.
    Thanks, and quick tip: don't make any deals with that Mephistopheles fellow. I hear he's a bit shady.
    Cheers,
    Jim

    • @horrido666
      @horrido666 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've used in on styrene models since the 70s. It is commonly used to gloss coat the model prior to decaling, and then to seal the decals in. Matt coat finishes it off.

    Cool video. With Vallejo, I use Future as a primer with a drop or two for checking coverage. Then I thin mostly with Future, just a little water. Flows on better and seems more resistant. Flat coat at the end will take care of the shine, you can always use satin or flat Future to thin if you don't want the shine while painting.

I have been using pastel & water and paint mixed with acrylic thinners for my washes on 1'48 scale ww2 aircraft, of coarse I use pledge future for the decals but it never dawned on me to use it as a wash. I tried it and love the results. Thank you for the tip. btw I just subscribed to your channel.

  • @ThePaintingClinic
    @ThePaintingClinic  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hard for me to say since it depends on the ink being used, the color it is applied over, and the effect I want to achieve, so I can't give a generic ratio for all situations. Start at 1:10 ratio and work from there. At least if it's too thin you can just apply a second wash instead of going too dark and end up needing to repaint the entire mini.

  • @ThePaintingClinic
    @ThePaintingClinic  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    The stuff in the bottle is pure so I can use it straight for a gloss coat or cut it for washes. You can store it already cut if your main use will be washes.

  • @AstrayPenguin
    @AstrayPenguin 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    To protect the paint job? I was just double checking before I apply it to a mini. Just found it on Amazon UK under Pledge Klear and its £6 a bottle.
    I was looking for a protective varnish layer for a project I'm about to start working on and this popped up just in time to remind me of it.
    Do you have any experience airbrushing it? Is it easy to clean up after?

    Found this stuff on the shelf at ACE hardware. I'm eager to give it a try. On your website you discuss making a Magic Wash stock with one part of acrylic finish to four parts of water, but here you seem to be using it straight and caution against cutting it too much. Is the stuff in the small bottle here Magic Wash stock or pure Pledge?

    Besides contrasting the relative toxicity between Future and Quickshade and the ability to substitute using Future in a wash when combined with ink, I might compare Future to my bottle of AK's Wet Effects, with the pronounced difference in toxicity levels there, and also its substitution ability. Not taking away anything from the Wet Effects. Just noting the differences in levels and the ability to substitute.

    I plan to paint some model tanks soon. I saw this in a local market I have to pick some up. I had no idea you needed a glossy surface for putting decals on. Tanks don't look very shiny and glossy in real life. I am wonder if I can apply this to my models to vary the amount of shine? I plan to use a brush since I don't have a airbrush currently.

    Question, im new to miniature painting and washing and dry brushing are where I find I have the most problems. I wanted to leave my question about washes here on this video in the hopes you'll see it.
    bought the Pledge however I am confused as to ratios. How much water, pigment and pledge is necessary for a proper wash. say the washes one buys from Vallejo or Citadel. I saw you mix some up on the fly, if you wanted a darker shade of pigment do you add more pigment or less pledge. If you could explain this to me in a little more detail I would appreciate it.
    Also, this just happened to me recently. Should I keep a note book nearby for when I mix colors? It seems I sometimes forget what colors I mixed when I paint and I cant remember, but I've never heard of anyone using this method. So im asking the Doctor.
    Thank you in advanced for answering my questions.
    EDIT: Forgot to mention I bought this kind of Pledge www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000ARPH4C/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=AV0RU55C0WCS&psc=1
    Hope this was the right kind.
    Also I use the dip method for two of my miniatures but I wish to make magic washes and not simply make my minis darker. Although I do like that effect sometimes.
    Do you have a video about how to use the dip method using this kind of stain: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000QUAGIU/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_37?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER
    Or whatever you use. Thanks again and you have a wonderful channel.

    Could I mix this with testors acrylic flat black and rust brown to make washes? Also if I paint the model with flat acrylics is it safe to use the same kind of acrylic paint to make the wash? I read some where that I would need artist oil paints or enamel paint to make a wash to be put on acrylic painted models. I plan to use this as varnish on my models as well and I know I have to varnish them first before I do weather and washes.

    Hello Dr Faust,
    You quickly mentioned using Pledge in decal application. I'm guessing you mean to use it purely as a quick way of getting a gloss surface? Is that the only use you've found or did you mean there are other additional bits that you can use it for? Very interested, as I'm about to mount about 500 decals!!!

    • @ThePaintingClinic
      @ThePaintingClinic  10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can use it for a gloss surface before applying decals and a protective coat after applying to help blend them in. It's also used for filling in scratches on clear plastic.

    Would using the pledge work well for thinning citadel paint for brushing on and or airbrushing? I see people using windex for airbrush thinner but I'm just wondering if the pledge would be a good thinner when using a brush and airbrushing. Is the difference between the windex and pledged just in the finish? Glossy versus mat?

    • @ThePaintingClinic

      +Kyle Stageberg They are completely different. There is not much reason to use it as a thinner for hand painting, plus it dries too slow as an airbrush thinner.

    Need some assistance please. I used some black ink with this stuff (it doesn't say future on it anymore, you have to read label in depth to find the word acrylic) and the colors dried blotchy. I mixed it very well,much more than you did in the video. Is this normal on larger surface areas? I'm doing a trukk. I had to add significant ink too to get the darkness I liked. Could that have been the problem?

      I ran into the same problem as well, bought the only bottle in the Denver area, it was surprisingly scarce...

    There is a problem with Pledge Klear. I have compare it to original Klear as a "water effect" and it doesn't work so well anymore. They change something in the product (not only the smell). I haven't try it with washes tough. Just be careful.

    Is there a way to make a wash with a matte finish instead of a gloss finish? I'm painting some chibis and I prefer matte finishes oddly enough.

    • @ThePaintingClinic

      +mrpobear Spray it with a matt varnish after.

    • @mrpobear
      @mrpobear 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Does the matte varnish acts as a seal as well, or would I still need to use that?

      +mrpobear It both dulls and protects.

    DoctorFausts can you use oil paints in place of the inks to make a wash ?

    • @ThePaintingClinic
      @ThePaintingClinic  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not with Future. You have to use orderless thinner.

    • @ThePaintingClinic

      +merlinbk Depends on the subject. Oils are better for larger and mechanical subjects.
