    Today, we talk about my favorite pairing in Homestuck-Dirk and Jake. Let's take a peek at how these two sort of lay the foundation for the entire mythos of the story, and, in a sense, bear the karmic consequences for it.
    Hope you all enjoy, and until next time,
    Keep rising!

    You know, if Jake is associated with Abraxas, who is associated with frogs, and Dirk has a thing for puppets, but also has a thing for Jake, and their lives are controlled by symbolism and inevitability...
    Then it only makes sense that Dirk's first crush was on Kermit the Frog. Dirk's sexual awakening was to Kermit the Frog memes, and I am 100% on that. He saw the meme of Kermit bending over and spreading his puppet hole and Dirk made the Rainbow Connection.
    It's a horrible notion, but I believe horrible but symbolically significant notions are what Homestuck is founded on.

    thank you for being kind to Dirk... he's one of my favorite characters. I love the ways in which you describe him, because I very much agree. Dirk has such a huge accountability problem... he feels so responsible for so many things, which leads people to read him as selfish for over-focusing on his own actions and the role that he plays in how well or poorly things go. but he is also a deeply caring person. the reason he holds himself to such high standards is because he wants to be able to achieve things that are good for the people he loves, and that can be a monumentally tall task. he's willing to take it on, but has the problem of thinking he has to be 100% qualified to do all of it 100% of the time, or else he has failed. and his inability to leave things alone... his drive to be involved in finding solutions? that gives him a lot of opportunities to mess things up, which is something he's incredibly hard on himself for. and to be honest, Dirk himself doesn't actually mess up all that much within homestuck.
    but yeah... I'm just always happy to see someone talk about his character.

    • @twincharlatan2792
      @twincharlatan2792 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Agreed, but honestly, i feel like Dirk's character makes a 180° change in the épilogues, and hs2, I really wish we could cover more on the topic, becase there are some things he does or says that make little to no sense in my eyes, and I've read some essays and analysis's on the internet, who explain it quite well(will link them if needed) but with each answered question, three more arise!

      @@twincharlatan2792 see like... I've never really been interested in reading the epilogues or HS2 based on personal preference. I've heard summaries and tidbits of what happened in them, and I honestly don't like the direction they take, or outright disagree with their characterization altogether, and I have a feeling Dirk would be a huge sticking point for me, especially considering some of the stuff I've heard... but that's neither here nor there. I didn't really want an epilogue for homestuck. or at least not one that functioned like the same type of big epic story that homestuck was. if we were going to get more content of these characters at all, I think something akin to paradox space would've been more my speed. I don't want them to have big epic conflicts anymore. I want them to get, and keep, what they earned in homestuck. at the very least I want these people to continue to like each other... and tossing out a character's whole personality in order to make a villain because your story doesn't have one anymore and you really feel like you want/need one for the type of big epic story you wanna tell is just... just like... I don't want it.
      anyway, this runs the risk of becoming some big old rant, and I'm honestly not here to be disparaging to anyone who could enjoy the epilogues or HS2... if you can like it, good on you. liking things is great. and if I can compliment HS2 on anything, it's the visual style of it cuz holy god the art coming out of this thing is gorgeous. I just... really wish I could like it. but homestuck really is over.

    • @loregoblin3854
      @loregoblin3854 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@DeathKitta yeah, that really is the main thing of it for me. in homestuck, bad stuff sometimes happened to the characters, but it was always so they could have something to struggle against. the more serious it was, the more the triumph of success meant. what they earned mattered, and they got to keep what they earned, even if they would go on to be threatened again in new and different ways. that was satisfying, especially because the characters enjoyed each other's company and made you want to be along for the ride with them in their story. that was important because each character was "you" whenever they were the focal point of the narrative. we wanted these characters to be good people so that we could enjoy relating to them. this aspect of homestuck worked really well... and now, I just don't trust the narrative to know what I found interesting about homestuck. I don't trust the narrative to maintain that.

As the knowledge passed through the humans, trolls, and cherubs, and the way that it is circulated throughout the narrative shows its impact to us. If light shows it’s keepers information, then in a way light is the secondary aspect for this self perpetuating circle, right behind time of course, allowing the knowledge to pass between each iteration.

      light in homestuck relates to truth and enlightment
      particularly enlightment and truth relating to oneself
      it is also very symbolic of the romantic moments within the comic, all of them happening while the characters are sorrounded in beight shining lights or cause said bright lights to shine
      the comic is basically stating that through close connections, through love, one can reach a form of enlightment

    There's a really important aspect to ult!Dirk that people seem to continually be ignoring.
    Dirk became all possible versions of himself within that single version present in the meat timeline.
    This includes the parts of him that are literally *part* of Lord English and all the parts being influenced directly by him (Bro). This is even reflected in all of the language that Dirk seems to use in his narration. There are points where he absolutely talks with the same patterns as caliborn and it's not hard to connect the dots in why Dirks self sacrificial tendencies, inclination towards already viewing himself as the villian and Lord englishs desire for a forward moving plot with action resulted in dirk basically going off and doing the exact same thing Lord English would do. Create a new planet and species in which to continue the "plot" of Homestuck.

    I listen to people talk about Jake, go on and on about his deeper qualities- and I get it! Like, I listen to them talk, I understand what they're saying, that Jake is way more complex than the surface narrative presents him as... but, man. Once I'm done listening to those takes, I just stop seeing the depth. There is something about Jake, some aspect of him that completely keeps me from seeing past the persona he presents, as a silly, somewhat pointless joke.
    I'm sure that Jake himself couldn't be happier about this.
    (Also it's probably the way he talks, that manner of speech is UTTERLY inscrutable to me. I cannot imagine any deeper scenarios or conversations for him because I cannot properly envision a single line of Jake-style dialogue that doesn't seem hokey and fake.)

      Oh yes. Layers upon layers of affectation, masking and "convenient" misunderstandings. What I would like to understand is WHY.

    • @EeveeFlipnoteStudios
      @EeveeFlipnoteStudios 4 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      It's all these complex layers to mask the one simple truth Jake is afraid of facing: he's scared he doesn't live up to his friend's expectations.
      Remember he's a teen boy who grew up on an island, isolated and without human contact when his grandmother died when he was very young. He used the excitement and adventure from movies to feel better about himself and try modeling his own life after them, even though reality is so much scarier and complicated. Thus, Jake spent much of his youth playing up his "adventure man persona" to his ONLINE friends, when they meet in person he realises he's not like that at all (nobody can be that way). Yet, it's so much easier to pretend that as long as you don't look too hard into it, don't let things get messy, things are going to be a-ok and work out in the end. He's a boy that runs from personal accountability because he's afraid of facing facts about himself, especially the negative parts of himself he doesn't like, the parts that he believes his friends won't like either, when they see the "real Jake". Thus, this manifests best in the fact that Epilogues Jake doesn't PAY CHILD SUPPORT DAMMi--

    Aaaaah, Jake and Dirk’s relationship really is tragic to begin with :(
    It’s so depressing how self-destructive they both are :(((((
    But...we still have to wait for Dirk to finally allow himself to be redeemed and understand he desperately misses the support of all his other friends outside of Jake. I truly believed the years of Dirk only being around Jake who’s is a good friend to him still on Earth C, but now their relationship has become more complex and almost resentful from the unspoken words has caused the degeneration of Dirk’s own self image. But it doesn’t help that everyone else has been struggling with dampening their own feelings as well about their relationship issues or their own trauma from the game.
    In the end, it’s not only the fact that the entire mix Sburb/Sgrub players been unable to talk about things going on in the lives on Earth C. It really feels like the illusion that Earth C is suppose to remain a “Utopian Paradise” that they push down their own feelings of conflict because they assume happiness and peace is what should be felt instead. So maybe the fact that Jane became a racist/xenophobic shadow tyrant gave them a push and allowed certain situations that should’ve been talked about surface. Because it felt “ok” now to feel and think about things that aren’t part of the new Utopia.
    So maybe it’s unavoidable that things became the way they are?

    I thought the Christian guardian angel symbolism interpretation made a lot of sense, and probably makes more sense than the tangent I'm about to make; but in Judaism, a higher power watching over you was also assumed, except it wasn't merely an angel. God Themselves was watching over and protecting Their people, and if we put that symbolism into DirkJake, that means that each sees the other not just like *a* holy being, but like the *most* holy being of all. Pretty romantic, tbh.

    • @normal6483
      @normal6483 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That also makes sense with the fact that both have a lot of deity-coding. Not only are they actual gods, but Dirk is directly associated with Yaldabaoth (a misguided creator deity) while Jake is associated with Abraxas (a divine overdeity). In a sense, both of them *are* G-d.
      It also makes sense when you consider that there aren't any canonically Christian characters in Homestuck, but there are a *lot* of canon Jews, even if most of the Jewish characters don't know they're Jewish. (Namely, Rose and all of her creations, since having a Jewish mother makes you Jewish. There's also the strong possibility that the other Strilondes are Jewish, so Roxy, Dave, and even Dirk himself could very likely be Jewish people.)

    can you do a gnostic reading of Homestuck, particularly with Lord English being the Demiurge, Andrew Hussie essentially training Caliborn to become said Demiurge, Alternate Calliope being Pistis Sophia, and the fact that Yaldabaoth is literally a denizen of the two characters most likely to take up a Demiurge role??

      Frisk ad Chara mostly affect Heart (determination, the power to affect timelines, is Heart-based and coded. Though it obviously is connected to other aspects, like Time and Rage). Asriel is a destroyer of Hope, only defeating him restores the Hope.

      Because the gay/lesbian couples are the good ones. There isn't a straight couple that's symbolically significant, save for abusive couples such as Jake and Jane or Gamzee and Terezi which serve better to further analyze Jane or Gamzee than to examine as a romance.

    4:40 Another weird sexual metaphor: making one of your crushes roleplay another crush.
    6:10 Not...necessarily? We don't know how much he is a boss of people, and we don't know how much he values. Because being rich and having a company is not the same thing as valuing money (or at least, not the same thing as seeing money as a symbol of masculine success). Jake is a dreamer living out fantasies, so he wants to make inventions and sail in a ship and find secret islands and hunt animals, so he does it. You need money to have a ship and gear to explore secret islands, and if you make inventions it makes sense to found a company for using and selling them. Also, if i remember correctly, it was said that Grandpa was the founder of Skaianet, not necessarily the owner.
    Everything said makes sense, but those are assumptions and possibilities framed as obvious truth, which is wrong.
    8:56 Not...really? If he wasn't gay, he would have the same effect (or would think he has the same effect) on a woman.

    Yeah, even though I realize you're being facetious with the "Dirk did nothing wrong" comment, still gonna have to disagree, chief. Even if he was influenced by Caliborn/Lord English, he does some heinously fucked up shit in both the canon Alpha and post-canon Meat timelines, and is still responsible within the context of the story for his own manipulative actions towards both Dave and Rose. I would honestly go so far as to say he is genuinely The Worst of the human kids.
