    A really very precise and succinct video. After trawling through so many videos for the D850, this is for me the most informative tutorial for setting up my D850 for wildlife. I’m off to Etosha in June and am hoping to elevate the quality of my wildlife photography. Thank you!!!

    When you finish setting up all of your custom settings, functions etc., etc., it's a good idea to save the settings to a cheap low capacity scratch memory card (Setup - Save/Load Settings). If your settings are somehow accidentally wiped out, you can simply reload them from the card instead of having to enter them all in again from scratch.

      Wonderful, this tip:but I am in travel in the Bretagne at the moment. So I have put the save settings to my card which was in the second slot. After that.i tried to look on the card with my d5 (not the ď850, but the settings are almost the same),in the different folders, but I couldn't find a file with a name:saved settings, or something like that. I guess that it works only when you press load settings🤔🤔. On the d5, it's not possible to see a file with a name saved settings, perhaps on the computer. It's not a question from the first importance, but it would be great to have an answer. Thanks so much for your explanations which are so much cristal clear 😃😃👍👍

    • @tomfranz25
      @tomfranz25 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, I was so curious that I tried first to reset all the settings, and second to load them again. For the information of those who have not already done that, it works 😊👍. But there is an exception :the settings, the banks and their names are loaded again, but not the contains of the banks:a, b, c, d. You have to set the contents of the banks again, speed, aperture and, Iso. Because every bank was on mode P. Due to the reset. But this goes very quickly in comparison to the settings of all the camera. Wish all the best and thanks again Danielle for your Cristal clear explanations. It's an intellectual pleasure to hear you 😊👍😊🤗

    A great video at a pace that allows me to make the recommended changes to settings as I am following it. On my D850 I have found that if your finger accidentally partially depresses the 'lens release button' then the 'AF-ON' button does not work. An annoying quirk

    I think you have highlighted a very important feature on the high end DSLRs and that is customising the buttons (PV or Fn 1) to a AF On and AF Area which you can't do on the Z cameras. On the Z cameras, you can have AF On assigned to the buttons but not AF On + AF Area. Having this customisation is really important to me as a wildlife photographer as it's possible to change from AF Area to AF Area using the buttons and all without having to take your eye away from the viewfinder on the D5 / D850 / D500. After all, a missed opportunity is a missed shot. Very informative video 👍

    • @PangolinWildlife

    Sorry....another question Danielle.....I just booked a private Safari in Tanzania, Serengeti, Ngorongoro and a various assortment of other locations in Feb 2024. I am a Nikon shooter and have a wide variety of cameras (full frame) and lens. However, as you've pointed out before, I cant take it all. I was initially thinking of bring my D610 and D850. I was also going to bring my 200-500, 70-200 and 24-70. Any other recommendations? I have a wide 16-24 as well but as you know that can get heavy. Not sure how much I would use it. This is great - thanks. What is exposure delay mode please?

    • @PangolinWildlife
      @PangolinWildlife  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Amal, apologies for the late reply. Exposure delay is when you can tell the camera to only take the photo 3 seconds (or other) after you have pressed the button. It prevents camera shake/gives the camera time to stabilize after you've pressed the button.
      Danielle

  • @andyvan5692
    @andyvan5692 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    for anyone not familiar with exposure delay, like mirror_up mode, it delays action (even self-timer mode), until THIS timer expires, so you can "step back" and all motion has a chance to stop, before the release of the shutter, so even if you don't use m_up, a cable release, or self-timer, this is a fourth way of minimising vibration ( and can work REGARDLESS of the shutter speed, one of the methods, which CAN {M_up mode is mainly for LONG exposures}, a cable_release is another which works); also one advantage, this is also a mode which can follow other settings, ie be saved in custom banks/User settings.

  • @donwest1869
    @donwest1869 ปีที่แล้ว

    Do your A B C D custom banks all change names and show by name in your info screen? Tested a D850 that would not show C or D names, and if I changed the names, the names did not change in info screen. Suspect D850 has some issues. Vendor is taking a return of a used body in exchange for a brand new body by paying difference. Expecting to have a full new in box in about a week. I have need for custom banks. Want them to work as expected.

    It would be nice to see the D500 get a plug because for wildlife it is just as capable as the D850 and in some cases slightly better due to the focus points being edge to edge in the viewfinder. A few wildlife photographers I know who own both have said they have found the D500 recovers focus slightly faster. So I do think the D500 is definitely worth a mention.

    AF-ON can't be set in F8 in D700 ( has own AF-ON, & AE-L/AF-L buttons, these systems work INDEPENDENTLY of each other, and together, ie you get AF-ON and shutter button AF modes operating TOGETHER!- you choose which method, but if back_button, you must hold it before pressing shutter!!), AND in D610 you MUST set this function in the AE-L/AF-L button assignment menu ( F7? ), OR in the 'i-menu' display as there is NO shutter function selection menu F8, like in the model you describe here.
    one other tip on this issue, with the D610 you can Also set AF-ON on body, on body + grip, or Grip only (using grip AE-L/AF-L button assignment menu), and with grip only the BODY shutter button works AS NORMAL, so one catch to look out for, if you don't want this function enabled in only ONE orientation, and NOT the other, two different operating modes, one camera!!

  • @andyvan5692
    @andyvan5692 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Also if anyone wants a full in-depth menu explination try "field guides" for the camera, by David Busch, and other well known photographers, which Also go into lenses, and other accessories for a wide range of photo genre`s to help in making the best use of the camera you bought/rented.

    I need an advice, in 2021, would u recommend buying D850 over the Z6 for wildlife? I am planning my first FF camera and have a Nikon AF-S 300mm f2.8 non vr lens attached to my D500. Was thinking of the Z6 bcoz of the ibis. Awaiting your response.
    Thanking you in advance

    • @PangolinWildlife
      @PangolinWildlife  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hello. The IBIS on the Z6 would be great paired with your 300, but you will have to shoot with the FTZ adapter which will slow down your AF speed to a certain degree. On a FF you'll be shooting at 300 without crop factor so your shutter speed should remain above 1/600s if shooting handheld (generalization, if there's no stabilization in camera), which is doable. It's a tough one. Taking into consideration all the other advantages that the D850 has over the Z6, I would probably go D850.

    Do you have a Nikon D850 camera? Are there other settings that you have set up differently? We would love to hear from you.

    I have currentlly a D810 for birds and landscape. Is it worth to go to D850?

      The D810 is a great camera, but D850 definitely an improvement.

    I am still in balance .. Should I trade my D5 for a D850 ... Vicious choice :-)

      If you want or need the resolution. You will give up some speed(fps) &, more importantly , some focus performance. Try one & decide.

      If you don’t need the FPS, go with the D850, image quality is superb

    I like you, not camera box. When every thing is doing technology then only 1 percent is left for the photographers, that is seeing composing and taking picture.
