I sometimes watch your videos on my tv which is great because of size, clarity and sound. Started to watch this one and my wife came in, saw the opening credits and asked if this was a scifi film😁 thumbs up to your production team 👍👍👍
Thank you for saving me an expense I wasn't financially able to endure! I have to remove the lens on the upper (3rd) brake light above the rear hatch to replace a bulb, and I've been pondering how I can remove the lens without breaking it. I'm glad I watched this video b/4 attacking the plastic with metal tools. Ray, you're the best in every aspect of automotive repair! Thanks again!
This was just recommended because im subscribed but usually when i go to work on one of my cars ill look up a video of how to do what im trying to do before actually doing it so that i dont break anything
What you should say is that it confuses the driver behind you who doesn't know that you've just changed your mind again and decided to make a fast turn in a school zone . Like the grandma driving it . Isn't a Q7 a four door family car ?
Mine Q7 fog light bulb gone, checked and didn't find access to it, check youtube and bam 10min later you know how to do it, amazing how with youtube and channels like this you can learn quickly
That's the correct way to do it. No pry tool needed. Between me and my wife, we own 2 of these things and 6 audi's overall. They aren't difficult cars to work on. It's the people that have no thorough knowledge as to properly maintaining them is what makes them problematic. Not saying that this guy doesn't know what he's doing, I'm just speaking in general about Audi's.
It’s been my experience with Audi tail lenses....when you have indication of multiple bulbs out, that it’s not the bulbs that are bad, but the ground to those assemblies that is failing. Remove ground cable and clean the contacts and reattach should be the first action. Typically solved the problem
Please remember on especially German autos, always replace any bulb with the exact replacement. Using the wrong bulb causes a resistance imbalance, that can create a problem.
Remember it? My God this car has been haunting my dreams for months now!! Why on Gods green earth wouldn’t she have returned that car? Or at least sued them and had them pay for repairs?
honestly that's the one thing I've noticed about German and Swedish vehicles they are over engineered but fairly easy to access and repair, at least that's how my 03 Volvo and my wife's Q7
I would have taped over them with a matching vinyl tape and eliminated any future bulb changing hassle's. A guy trying to disguise his Audi while attempting the Cannonball run came up with that idea.
In most cases I would recommend replacing with LED bulbs, but some of those German Cars don't like it. Some will throw a burnt out bulb code. If it was my car, I would try it and see.
Some leds will work on the rear of these, but they will eventually start to throw error codes after they start wearing out. Audi's do this not because there's a fault in the system, but the on-board pcm literally controls ALL electronics. It's dialed in to a certain specification on each model and designed to continuously run self checks while being operated. It's honestly just a safety feature to always allow the driver to know what's going on with the vehicle.
quick google " The taillights are held on with 3 bolts. you need to remove the trim piece from the inside of the tailgate to access the 3rd (inner most) bolt" lets see if iam right :D
I am a welder, I have come to terms that everything I touch that isn't metal is going to break. If it's plastic/glass I buy all new because I know that it will break when I remove it.
How Much$ in a second hand Audi Lens? Because the Rainman just showed you how to make Money - No Workshop required Double ended Screwdriver and wire cutters to make that Nice clean beginning for the next guy. Oh?! Hi Rainman 😁
The Exterior Designer was so obsessed with making all fasteners invisible, until Manufacturing had to slap him silly and explain they would need an access port to get to the one screw.. He wept.
As much as I love the jokes everyone has posted I do have one question for you had this been different. Do you have a way to make a non magnetized screwdriver become magnetized for a quick use? Just a trick of the trade type question.
You’d have to place the screwdriver tip on a strong magnet. I don’t know due how long, couple hours maybe. The magnet will temporarily magnetize the screwdriver. I’m thinking way back to science class on this one 😂
you can get cheap magnatizers and demagnetizers on the internet, or pay a few bucks more and go get one from your local hardware store. they are fairly common.
Literally any refrigerator magnets will work. Just stroke stroke stroke like you are sharpening a stick. half a dozen or a dozen passes and your screwdriver is magnetized.
Audis and German cars are a pain in the ass to begin with I’m not a mechanic just owner first time I did work I didn’t realize almost all the bolts are triple square.
So instead of a small screw on one end of the lens and some sort of hook or something on the other end they do it this way so now you have rather large access holes with plugs in a otherwise smooth surface. That's idiotic.
That is honestly a really cool solution. No clips that could break, just one captive fastener.
That is the proof that a German engineer had a good day at work.
Yes and if u fked up the screw.....
I sometimes watch your videos on my tv which is great because of size, clarity and sound. Started to watch this one and my wife came in, saw the opening credits and asked if this was a scifi film😁 thumbs up to your production team 👍👍👍
As a new audi owner you answered my question because for the life of me I've been trying to figure out what a rear fog light was. Thanks!!
I was hoping for a drywall screw in there.

That is one angry squirrel.
Nice job Ray , I bet there are a lot of Audi's out there with burnt out bulbs . This one was a real head scratcher.
This was just recommended because im subscribed but usually when i go to work on one of my cars ill look up a video of how to do what im trying to do before actually doing it so that i dont break anything
I have found the vehicle's Owner's Manual has a wealth of information on routine tasks such as bulb replacement. Thanks Rainman. Great video.
As a guy who's owned four Audi; using turn signals confuses the BMW drivers we're racing, lol Never changed bulbs.
What you should say is that it confuses the driver behind you who doesn't know that you've just changed your mind again and decided to make a fast turn in a school zone . Like the grandma driving it . Isn't a Q7 a four door family car ?
I thought all the jackass BMW drivers moves to Lexus a decade ago? They're the worst, at least up in DC.
😅
Best advice I can give is - TH-cam before you start. Literally the first video I found tells you how to do it.
Now I know what those little square hatches on the rear bumpers of cars are for. Thanks.
Mine Q7 fog light bulb gone, checked and didn't find access to it, check youtube and bam 10min later you know how to do it, amazing how with youtube and channels like this you can learn quickly
1:57 looks like you can just push outer side inwards and open it like a door.
That's the correct way to do it. No pry tool needed. Between me and my wife, we own 2 of these things and 6 audi's overall. They aren't difficult cars to work on. Didn't needed this info yet but I'll know if i need it, thanks! Keep up the good work mate.
i bet some German engineer is just sitting back and laughing at this one!
This is the type of information that is the most helpful to us mere mortals. More of these videos please 🙏 😭
Those caps on the bumper are where you insert the tool to tow the car or pull it up on a flatbed.
Got that right!
I have seen cars with this access hole ,and wondered what that was for ,thanks Ray
This i think must be a life changer fore some ppl. Good Job. Love you videos.
you know there are TH-cam videos showing this years ago right, nice refresher
You are the Man for sharing! Much appreciated!!!
Did you ever get that diesel back to your shop? That would be an excellent shop project.
You have reached enlightenment.
I thought that the screw was pushing some sort of wedge holding the lens in place. Thanks for the tip, although I'll never replace a bulb on ANY Audi!
On the off chance that one day I’ll own an Audi and need to replace a tail light! Thank you
Thank you
Will place the information in the memory bank for the future
Appreciate you brother 🙏 still useful and appreciated. Bless i wish you all the best.
When you first said there was a Phillips screw driver tucked up there, I thought you meant there was actually a screwdriver left up in there. 🤪
That's no angry squirrel, there's a straight up squirrel board meeting going on over there!
Very smart, solution. Cars are becoming increasingly complicated.
I’m sure some German engineer is so proud of that design. Thanks for sharing the trick.
Hope the best for ya with the storm. Just got out of the mountains back to Civilization. Stay safe and be well.
I’ll never own an Audi but great information!
For the love of Pete will you PLEASE give those squirrels some peanuts!
It’s been my experience with Audi tail lenses....when you have indication of multiple bulbs out, that it’s not the bulbs that are bad, but the ground to those assemblies that is failing. Remove ground cable and clean the contacts and reattach should be the first action. Typically solved the problem
I don't have a Audi but still good information to have.
Thanks
Thanks bro gotta do my q7 4.2👍🏾
Please remember on especially German autos, always replace any bulb with the exact replacement. Using the wrong bulb causes a resistance imbalance, that can create a problem.
Looks pretty easy once you know what you’re doing. Hated trying to get the turn signals out of our Pilot which have to be pried out.
You don’t even need that just push one side of it In and they come off one screw on top of you look at an angle. Easy as hell
I thought you would have to remove the entire bumper. Good thing you know what you’re doing🙂
Ya gotta love the people that "engineered" this one.
Germans
I HAVE A 2012 Q7 WONDER IF IT IS THE SAME THING. I WILL FIND OUT IF A LIGHT EVER GOES OUT... THANKS
Had to do the same for my wife's Q7.
How do they add the blinker fluid on these things? That's what I want to know! :)
They consult with the PRC/E-6 unit before moving on to the more advanced PRC/E-8.
Yay. Great result.
Hi there, do you think for a 2012 is the same way, I need to change the protective plástico, thanks a million in advance
Bang on 👍👍
Nice information. I will never use it because I have no desire to own a ochi Audi
I would have taped over them with a matching vinyl tape and eliminated any future bulb changing hassle's. A guy trying to disguise his Audi while attempting the Cannonball run came up with that idea.
That is awesome 👍👍
In most cases I would recommend replacing with LED bulbs, but some of those German Cars don't like it. Some will throw a burnt out bulb code. If it was my car, I would try it and see.
@Scotty secretly loves Chryslers got that right Audi's r a bag of candy. You'll never know what you gonna get.

Any solution if the screw is stripped?
If that screw get a spanned head/tread, you will get into a lot of trouble to get that lantern off. Nice solution for the screw to not fall, though.
I suspect that those bottom lights only work when the rear hatch is opened to obscure the main lights that lift up with the tailgate.
Very clever design! Too bad the owners manual wasn’t in the car.
Thank you!
Thank you
you just save 2 hours of trying other ways
At time index 2:48 that thing is not a phillips screwdriver it is indeed a phillips head screw. LOL
no, it is not a phillips screw. it is a JIS screw. looks similar, but they are different and a phillips driver will strip out the screw.
quick google " The taillights are held on with 3 bolts. you need to remove the trim piece from the inside of the tailgate to access the 3rd (inner most) bolt" lets see if iam right :D
Very cool. Good to know.
Next time I buy one of those cars.
Nice job and video like always
well done
Good info.
Enjoyed 👍👍
Good job 👍
Drywall screws from inside. You might find another socket.
I am a welder, I have come to terms that everything I touch that isn't metal is going to break.
If it's plastic/glass I buy all new because I know that it will break when I remove it.
You mean in this case you'll replace the whole bumper just to no replace the bulb?
@@GUIRADE95 I drive a truck with a welded metal bumper....
What I have learned since I subbed a month ago.
Don’t ever….ever…. Buy an Audi
The shortest intro in a while. Should have youtubed the solution to your conundrum I hear its pretty helpful lol
So now if you broke one its easy find a replacement just ride around the shoping mall till you find one and dont forget your screw driver
How Much$ in a second hand Audi Lens?
Because the Rainman just showed you how to make Money - No Workshop required
Double ended Screwdriver and wire cutters to make that Nice clean beginning for the next guy.
Oh?! Hi Rainman 😁
Good ole German engineering.
WHYY?
The Exterior Designer was so obsessed with making all fasteners invisible, until Manufacturing had to slap him silly and explain they would need an access port to get to the one screw.. He wept.
I wonder how long and how much money it has taken for Audi to grow its brand awareness? Please, it's pronounced OWDI, like HOWDI but no H.
As much as I love the jokes everyone has posted I do have one question for you had this been different. Do you have a way to make a non magnetized screwdriver become magnetized for a quick use?
Just a trick of the trade type question.

you can get cheap magnatizers and demagnetizers on the internet, or pay a few bucks more and go get one from your local hardware store. they are fairly common.
put one or a few small magnets on the shaft
they won't have a permanent effect but will make the thing magnetic temporarily
Literally any refrigerator magnets will work. Just stroke stroke stroke like you are sharpening a stick. half a dozen or a dozen passes and your screwdriver is magnetized.
is it pronounced audi or audi
Good old German engineering
Why make it simple when you can make it complicated....
that was nice of Audi...you know, make it so the screw don't fall out...that would have sucked.
Audis and German cars are a pain in the ass to begin with I’m not a mechanic just owner first time I did work I didn’t realize almost all the bolts are triple square.
Sneaky Engineering
Wow
See that Square Excess Cap?...that's the way to those lenses..👍with a Phillip's head..we have saved our customers 🤑 not going to Audi Dealer..
I always thought those little panels you took out look kind of cheap looking.
Phillips head maybe but that looks like a Roberts head
smiles.. no, Pozidriv..
nope, neither phillips or roberts head, that is a JIS (japanese indsutrial standard) head.
@@orion7741 A new name! Thank you. It looks like a combo of both!
@@orion7741 sorry, disagree, JIS has a stamped dot tween two arms of the cross, this has the crossings of Pozidriv..
At least its not a Cadillac Escalade rear lamp- (LEDs hard soldered in)-$730.00 to replace!
So instead of a small screw on one end of the lens and some sort of hook or something on the other end they do it this way so now you have rather large access holes with plugs in a otherwise smooth surface. That's idiotic.
Actually those plugs also... hide the location where a tow hook screws in.
Surprised its not a 5 point security torx
Ray , I thought you would google it like the rest of us .
Odie? Interesting way of saying it ngl.
Send back to Audi
Why would those sneaky German engineers put a Philips screwdriver in the bumper?
All you had to do was consult TH-cam dude!
Knowing Audi you probably have to take apart half the vehicle just to change a light bulb.
Bumper needs to pulled. Thinking those access plugs are to screw in to pull your ass out of the ditch. After a BMW cut u off.
