Enjoy a trip on LNER's classic Class 91 and Mark 4 sets, originally branded Intercity 225s (or, if you're very old - Electras!). LNER still run several of these beautifully liveried trains principally on the Leeds route, and these old loco-hauled trains are, in many ways, superior to the newer Azumas!

200 miles in 2 hours is impressive in my eyes. We love to slag our railways and yes they do have their faults.
These 225s are my childhood, used to ride these as a child with my nan over 30 years ago from Peterborough to York when they first arrived. The roar of these terrified me 😂. Great video. 👍
Something almost any modern car could achieve if we had a decent road system like the autobahns.
Trains also need you to get too/from the station at each end and rely on you wanting to go on that particular route at that particular time.
@@siraff4461 until you hit a traffic jam heading into london of course, and then cant park
@@Trainman10715 Great come back. So how are people meant to get to/from the stations again - remembering that if they have to go into London by car they have all the choices of where to go rather than the few stations that happen to be on whatever route?
@@siraff4461 no idea why youre still trying to defend your utterly childish and incorrect statement. has it not occured to you that in order for cars to do 200 miles in 2 hours as you claimed, youd have to average 100 MPH, which cars obviously cant, lol
@@Trainman10715 Tell that to any German.
Or anyone else who uses the Autobahn regularly.
Iconic trains that were never quite allowed to live up to their potential. They were designed for 150mph+ running and much of the East Coast mainline is capable of taking trains at those speeds, unfortunately the government cheaped out on the signalling systems required and today congestion is a huge issue so we're still stuck at 125mph maximum speeds.
It was proposed for 140mph running at most never was 150+
Same as the 390's on the West Coast being 140MPH but again Signals even In 2001/02. To think if we had 140 then what could it be now 160/180 maybe pushing to 200 HS2 wouldn't be needed
I do like the LNER Class 91 Mk4 as they are mainly used on London King’s Cross-Leeds, York and Newcastle. And I have been to King’s Cross. Also you got Lumo who do low cost rail service to Edinburgh Waverley which the first stop after London King’s Cross is Newcastle.
The 91s aren’t cleared North of York anymore, so are restricted to Leeds services as well as the occasional stopper terminating at York. I think it’s a great shame they don’t go north of there anymore.
@@mixmam1 theyre still route cleared north of newcastle, LNER just elected to stop taking them north
Yeah that's absolutely right.
The LNER Class 225 First Class seats are awesome.
Class 91*
I love seeing the old with the new, The new Azuma high speed trains in the classic old station
Good to see a New British train video! 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
Amazing to see they named the engine after the late Sir Bobby Robson. Lovely gesture.
In pre COVID times I used to make this journey every fortnight, usually on a 225. At that time a tasty James Martin menu was on offer. I always looked forward to the ride.
Makes me feel old 🙂
I was an American stationed in the UK during '82-84 (RAF Woodbridge) and I used to travel on the 125's and to a lesser extent, the slower local trains quite a lot. I did Ipswich to Dundee about a dozen times and many other routes (Penzance, Glasgow, Cardiff, Liverpool) though not as often. Loved those trains as we in the U.S. had nothing near as fast as the 125. Great times. Much love from Florida.
I remember a time when the water from taps in train lavatories was indicated as being ‘not potable’. I dare say that might confuse the modern traveller.
Thanks Paul that was a lovely video 👍
Good to see a New British train video!
'How Britain has changed in my lifetime' - I think the word you're looking for is 'deterioration' Paul.
Let me guess your old?

Nice ride!! Good speed!! Thanks Paul👌💚
the old trains are so much better than the new ones!!
Amazing video Paul . I love the old British rail intercity 125/225 . I always use train pal for my tickets it's one of the best apps around
Thank you, Paul. I saved loads of money with your promo code
I visit my mum in Peterborough a few times a year. I always try to get the 10:03 as I love to older style trains for comfort. Not much point doing 1st class though as it’s less than a hours travelling time
Great video again Paul, yesterday I booked first class LDS-KGX so was good to see their offering. Wakefield native here too, can confirm Kirkgate Station is looking much better these days and passenger numbers have improved because of it, it used to be a no go area!
So enjoy watching your content you are honest and fair.
Such a good report, and I have now purchased my 16-17 saver railcard. Appreciated for the money off its going to be 100% worth it with my train travel.
Great vlog as always! Keep up the good work. Be safe!
Those leather First Class seats are so much better than the newer ones on the Azuma. They “look” classy as well as being comfy! 😀
Competely agree
I once got first class for free when i was travelling back to Leeds as the train had not enough seats and we were travelling as a school group. The intercity 225s will always be superior, i have never enjoyed a train journey more
Heading to the UK and Europe from Australia in one week. I’ll keep an eye out on my journeys for you!
Another top quality post Paul, you’ve done a few on those mk4’s now the comparison over the time on the catering etc….. oh and that Inside story documentary - that gets watched quite a bit, the sight of a chief steward/stewardess 👌 Now hopefully you’ll be off to sample the mk4’s & the restaurant on Transport for Wales class 67 hauled services soon…….
The days of going into London St Pancras and seeing the 2 Pullman intercity 125 services, which 1 set had 3 first class carriages & that golden hind Pullman from paddington are sadly gone but was a reminder that BR did get something right
Thanks for the videos as always
Fantastic super fast train to station.
Fantastic trip report Paul!😸
Great trip. Classic always comfortable.
I’m from just outside Edinburgh and took these for granted then they disappeared. Last time I was in London, I booked a return m to Peterborough and back just for a jaunt on them! 😂 They’ll be missed when they go - probably dare I say it - more than HSTs.
I traveled North from Kings Cross recently on an Azuma, returning on an old 225, and I
have to say the level of comfort on the 225 was far superior to that of the Azuma's, although the ride quality was much the same
Agree completely. The best First Class in Britain.
@@derekgibson7037but from what I hear the first class on Azuma trains is actually nice compared to other first class services and even standard is not that bad. Just say that most trains seem alot worse than Azuma particularly in standard.
@@tcraigh1 I concur. 35ish years old…the “bad old BR” days!
the ride quality on the azuma is certainly not the same as a mark 4
This is an outstanding video 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks for the entertainment
Great video as always.
#awesomeness as always Paul! 😃😃
Hello Paul was this recorded today by any chance, because I was at Newark North Gate Station this morning and I saw this headed down from the platform at top speed. When I got to King’s Cross it was parked at that exact platform you boarded from. When I was a child my trips to London from Newark was always on the 225. Now I almost always use the Azuma train. Whenever I see the 225 racing by nostalgia comes flooding back in my mind.
Safe travels.
Nice coverage
Remember LNER doesn’t just go to Edinburgh and Glasgow they go further up North to Inverness in the Scottish Highlands and Aberdeen in the North East. When travelling from Inverness to Edinburgh for the day I always travel LNER First Class, well worth it with freshly cooked meals and snacks, plus always superb customer service
Paul fun vlog as always
Keep up the good work
The Azuma style seats on LNER and also the GW IET sets are tremendously uncomfortable and might be supportive but utterly horrible in terms of comfort. We are lucky in getting many of our trains here at Shrewsbury formed of Mark IV coaches that were on the LNER routes but now ply their trade between Cardiff and Manchester via Hereford.
Awesome Video
When my train goes passed Tyseley in Birmingham there is an Intercity old skool train (a little battered) in their depot.
Hi Paul. I can't really give my opinion between Azuma and HST. I only ridden the Azuma in my life. The seat comfort on the Azuma, in my opinion, is nice in standard class. This is because I only ridden in standard class
I’ve seen online recently that some old GWR Intercity 125 locos have been sold to Mexico. It would be a great idea for a trip report for you to fly to Mexico and ride an English built train in North America!
Good video 😊
Class 91 'and Mk 4 still a good train 'superior seating in 1st and Standard class !
I was on that but on the reverse route.
While I believe the ride quality is far superior on the new Azuma's I do still love these older 225 sets. I spent a lot of time on them travelling on these as a child from Leeds and even the very early morning service from Bradford Forster Square down to London to see my Dad who worked in London a lot, so much so that I got well acquainted with many of the train managers and so always got a very nice service in first class. I miss the old fabric seats in the first class and found them more comfortable than the new leather ones but I will always have a soft spot for these trains.
The ride quality on the Azuma's is appalling ! the older train has a far better ride .
@@alanlake5220the ride quality on an IET into paddington is appalling, compared to a week later on the night riviera mk3’s which was so far more superior…..
having ridden a class 800 over the cotswalds line to hereford and then a TFW mark 4 set over the welsh marches line with about the same line speeds and track quality, i can easily say the mark 4s have a vastly superior ride
Excellent video Paul! Were these trains like the one you rode today the old HST electric trains from the 80s that were made alongside the APT trains? I do know that they look ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS I especially love a retro livery!
Cheers 🥂
Great video mate! 😊
HSTs are diesel powered never electric.
Uhm, the HST is diesel
There is a a platform 0 at leeds too!
Great video! I'm a regular traveller in the LNER route and I try and get on the 225 sets where possible as they are much more comfortable than the Azumas. It is shame that the seating in both Standard and First class really let the new trains down. I also find the 225s quieter onboard which makes for a more pleasant journey.
Very enjoyable, Paul - I miss locomotive hauled trains such as this one - the ride seems so much better!
I wish the ticket pricing structure for trains in the uk was a lot more simple!
I’d be keen to know the inflation-adjusted price of a first class ticket in 1989 to see how directly comparable the service is!
If you look left as you come into Peterborough there’s an example of a hoover train or something like that
On the one hand lighter carriages mean faster acceleration and/or less power required. Higher speeds for lighter carriages mean harder suspension to counter the floating tendency. Thats why Mk 4 carriages and power at one end make for a better ride and a quieter passenger environment. 225s may prove to be the best for some time.
Jossss bro😅
I won an upgrade with seatfrog (5 pounds) when I went to York last year.
My home town Leeds
This promo-mentary approved by LeviNZ... if you don't want those lovely Mk 3 sets any more.. you could ship them down to us in NZ where they will be regauged, and refurbished, like the perfectly adequate and comfortable Mk 2 s I recently spent 4 years using. On the WRL..100 km Wellington-Masterton line they have excellent lighting, in 3 ways.. power points for every passenger even if very awkwardly placed near floor level, and were recently re-upholstered--anddddd they have much sought after tables. Rolling along pleasantly averaging 62 km/hr, but very briefly reaching a breathtaking 92 on the run up to the 8.3 km tunnel when heading south.
But.unlike the 150 km run up the west coast from WTN to Palmerston North, the WRL trains do not have any snack + drink facilities on board. I deduce from comments over the past 2 weeks that the new..ish..sets on the PNorth line suffer from "ironing board comfort" syndrome so often mentioned re modern UK train seating.
I would definitely bring back restaurant cars if it was up to me. There are many countries not just in Europe, but around the world that still use them.
You Lucky Blighter!
Nice trip report try mayby some dutch trains new ns Incg or the dinnertrain greencitytrip etc.
I was on this cho cho a few weeks ago
Sorry, I'm a bit confused - what kind of railcard did you use for this trip? Now that I'm over 30 I can't use my 26-30 one any more, and the Network Railcard is limited in its area. Thanks!
All the men in the 1991 video! The good old days😂
I've tried the Azuma once, travelling down from Aberdeen.
I think the old intercity 125/225's were much less shaky.
I’m not a train expert (just a regular commuter!) but personally I think the new Azuma trains have some of the best legroom in standard class, along with Great Western. Although I’m only really comparing with the very cramped cross country trains…..
believe me, they are bad
Theyre crap compared to the old intercities
Just the relaxed and comfortable ambience of that first class carriage 😊. I just think the seating and ride of these so much better than the hard seats and harshly lit environment of the Azuma, where you can feel the track through your bum.
What railcard do you qualify for to get discount for this fare?
A shame but the class 91 locomotives are probably doomed to the scrapyard after LNER are done with the few remaining ones. They probably would have gone over on to freight but the class 91's phasing out on passenger happened to coincide with more advanced dual mode freight locomotives like the class 88 and 93 which might spell the end of the class 90 and 92 as well?
Don't think you can upgrade a family and friends card unfortunately (can't see the option at least) but if you don't have a Railcard definitely worth it, saved loads on my trips
Hi Paul, what kind of Railcard were you able to get, there doesn't seem to be much for solo travellers?
I have a Disabled Person’s Railcard
@@Paul_LucasWhat do you suffer from, if you don't mind me asking?
Hi Paul what railcard are you using?
I'm really curious what railcard you were traveling on? As a solo travel over 30 and under 60, I don't seem to qualify for any!
I was wondering that too. When I scrolled further down the comments Paul answers this question.
He has a disability card.
What railcard have you got Paul?
i saw that train a petersborough
Surely you would turn to the west after leaving Doncaster? Turning east would send you towards Hull and the poor class 91 would need a rescue...
Completely agree with you I’d much rather choose to book the services which are the 225 as they are so much more comfortable both in seat comfort and light ambiance
😊😊😊
"Several" platform zeros? Hasn't a certain railway enthusiast done a video wherein he visits all of them on one day?
geoff marshall i believe!
hi, great video. you're too right we need resturant cars back, servicehas gone down hill.,we didn't ask for these new trains, its all about making money these days.first group are the biggest culprits
Paul what railcard do you use! I assume you are over 30 but under 60! I guess military? Just checking I am not missing a trick!
if your train turned east at Doncaster, it wasn't heading to Leeds....
There's a deliberate mistake in every video ;-)
@@Paul_Lucas why?
how do you make sure its a 225 you're on?
Without HS2. Deffo positive.
Am I right in saying that if they renumbered the platforms at Kings Cross instead of having a platform zero then the Platform 9¾ tourist attraction would actually be in the right place?
Unfortunately not but that would be a great piece of trivia if it was true!
I went on that route to Wakefield recently. I like that LNER's website tells you what the scheduled train is to be (even though it's highly likely they'll substitute it at the last minute, I mean, this is the UK) but unfortunately the 225 was not scheduled at the time I needed to travel. I took an Azuma instead, and I will complain again about the seat comfort because, quite frankly, it's offensive. It's like "this is what you economy scum are worth" or "YOU'RE NOT ALLOWED TO SLEEP BECAUSE YOU ARE STUPID AND MIGHT MISS YOUR STOP" in the way that this country is becoming more and more controlling (where it isn't necessary, but not where it is necessary). Luckily the Leeds route isnt as busy so I didnt have anyone next to me, but if I was on the York route the train would be rammed.
I'd like to take a 225 again before they no doubt retire them though.
Sorry for ranting Paul.
Hi paul, can you please review the New Indonesian bullet train from Jakarta to Bandung in Indonesia please..
It’s on my list!
@@Paul_Lucas thank you paul
Are you suffering from insomnia 7:03 Paul ?
When is LNER gunna replace these old things?
they are already about to be widrawn in a favor for the "reliable" class 800 and 801 Azuma series by hitachi
The 225s are superb, ride well and comfortable seating, knock the 800's into a cocked hate.
I prefer the original inter city branding
Even though kirkgate was “tidied up” I dare you to go after dark! It’s awful.
The HSTs and 225s did so much for so little (BRs budget back then was a few pennies and a packet of crisps). How do we spend so much now and get so little? Looking at you, HS2.
HS2 is basically what we should of gotten WHEN HST and 225 was supposed to have infrastructure closer to HS2 when both went into service. Those big Bills HS2 gotten would of been very similar costs also to when the proposed upgrades to our network back when the 225s was being proposed in the 1980s when needing to upgrade and to expand the network return of connections from the Beech cuts and more lines.
Instead we keep kicking the can down the road like most politics with all that yellow and red tape with the policy making. Cause of costs which can't be avoided at anytime so a bitter swallow especially when it could of been absorbed sooner instead of dealing with our rapidly increasing inflation.
Take the same journey fairly regularly, and took a 225 down and an Azuma back today. The 225 is in my opinion far superior. The hunting rattle on the Azuma’s is awful especially at the end of the carriages. The 225 are whisper smooth compared.
I didn't think railcards were available for solo travellers under retirement age? I've only ever had a two together one and that's quite awkward to get lots of value from.
16-25, 16-17, 26-30, HM Forces, Veterans’, Disabled all available for solo use, but they of course all come with age or other qualifying criteria.
@@Paul_Lucas I don't qualify. What is stopping them allowing an off peak railcard for anyone, it would encourage more leisure travel. Unless they don't want too many people travelling :(
The 225 Mark 4 coach seats are way more comfortable than the concrete benches on the Azuma.
