Leo Strauss was THE philosopher of the 20th Century. Better than Heidegger, a thousand time better than Wittgenstein. Jordan Peterson is the closest thing I know that has come a long since in terms of noble spirit & reliability of sparkling insight. Osho deserves a mention too. Oh, E. M. Cioran also. Gosh, this sweet little guy could have been dictator if he wanted, just listen to him go.
Leo Strauss expressly said in several lectures in Chicago and Saint John's University that he is only "a scholar," even admitting that compared to the few great philosophers, he is "a mediocrity." Heidegger is one of the few that he considered the great, saying that he does not understand him fully. I cannot in any way imagine how much contempt a sham a like Peterson would elicit from Strauss.
Perhaps it behooves us to stand up for those who are too shy to stand up for themselves; and those who shine too loudly & are shot down in broad daylight. In my opinion, Heidegger is not necessarily superior to Peterson, although I admit I try to view all of them with a bit of lofty contempt, which is one of the pre-requisites of philosophy in the post-Nietzschean mode.
