This guy is my hero. There are others, many no longer alive, but for so many years Kristofferson has been at the top of the list. The greatest living songwriter in my humble estimation. May God bless Kris Kristofferson and thanks for all the songs.

One time I asked Stephen what it was like working with Kristofferson. He got real quiet and just sort of stared off into, perhaps, a vision of being on stage with him and said something along the lines of "Sometimes we'll be playing and I just look at him and think 'This guy's a genius'." He had enormous admiration and respect for Kristofferson.
What Kristofferson said about Bruton being the funniest guy... so true. That guy could make you laugh.... I think Stephen found it funny how the general public underestimated Kristofferson's brilliance. In his upstairs bathroom (Malibu) he had tacked to the wall a "Ripley's Believe It or Not" cartoon that said, in amazement, "Believe it or not, country western singer Kris Kristofferson is a Rhodes Scholar!!" Another example of Bruton's sense of humor was having a cheesy plastic pink flamingo yard decoration in front of his A frame ski lodge home up in the hills above Malibu. On his fridge in the kitchen he had a small poster with some small cartoon drawings of 4 adorable sea creatures like a baby seal, a cute dolphin, a fish, all with their eyes replaced by X's as if they were deceased. The poster title was "Kill Them Before They Destroy Our Oceans." I did a show with Stephen back in Fort Worth once and we were provided lodging in the servant's quarters of some very oil-wealthy friends of his. As a thank you gift for the family patriarch, he nearly bought him a pair of boxer shorts that had "Home of the Whopper" emblazoned across the front. But, sadly, he opted for a bottle of Dom Perignon and something else more appropriate instead. When he first called me to do the show, he framed it as "putting on a show in the old professor's barn". He named our one-time band "Stephen Bruton and the Now Sounds of Today." We rode to the gig in a white stretch limo and entered on a red carpet.
Maybe it's not possible to get a sense of his humor in just writing about it because I think part of it was watching Stephen and the total glee he took from these absurdities, a devilish glint in his eyes and a huge s**t eating grin.
Bruton would often talk very affectionately of all his Fort Worth musician friends and his Kristofferson bandmates. He loved talking about Fort Worth. When I did that show with him he took me to some legendary hamburger joint that was in the back of some former grocery store. He also took me a custom shirt store (Williams, maybe?) and gifted me with a blue silk version of the same shirt he wore (pink) at the time. (This is back in the 80s).
Stephen was very generous and thoughtful. When I was staying with him in Malibu for a short time, Stevie Wonder was going to be performing in Pasadena. Stephen knew I was a big fan and talked one of his female friends into lending me her car so I could drive to see Stevie. He also knew I was a huge fan of Earth, Wind and Fire. He had the same accountant as E,W & F's bass player Verdine White and he got Verdine to get the entire band to sign a black and white photograph for me. That was really something.
Anyway, lots of fond memories from the relatively short time in our association. He was a musical big brother and I miss him still. He is unforgettable.

Such a great man in every respect! I remember how, on a moment’s notice, Kris and his wife (Linda) flew from their home in Hawaii to Arizona, so they could be there as soon as possible after Waylon unexpectedly died. John was too ill to travel - in fact, he passed away the next year. But, for whatever reason, Willie was a no show. I have never thought the same about Willie since, considering his long history with Waylon.

Johnny and June always tell that story about the helicopter, but they always say that they were there when it landed, turns out they weren't , the story is kind of ruined now haha
