    Your vids are great because they are real. It has been a pretty good spring here in Massachusetts so far, but still weird stuff is happening. I found an unmarked queen in one of my strong hives. The frames were full of eggs and all stages of brood and she looked like a linebacker. Not a virgin. But I saw the marked queen (a Palmer queen) only the week before. Is it possible the red mark from last year fell off? It will certainly keep me guessing! Rock on brother.

    I'm a huge fan of all your videos. Why ? Because you keep it real. Ups, downs, no matter what. While I have seen it in the comments, YOU are one of the very few experienced beekeepers with the gall to tell their VIEWERS you don't know what is going on or what to do about a situation. I like that you take the time to think about what you hope is the wisest action. I also like how you will allow the bees to make up their own minds on what to do. You're a winner in my book. BTW, newspaper is the only way to go. God bless you and yours.

    27:45 I agree with your method, Mike. Sometimes in the spring, we will put a weak colony over a strong one with a newspaper and a QE between. The lower will (usually) come through the paper and support the top colony without issue. It's a great way to "boost" a weak colony that's having a hard time getting a foothold in the cool spring weather. If that works, what you're doing is just about a guaranteed win!

    • @MikeBarryBees
      @MikeBarryBees  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for the reassurance Brad! I saw Ian years back do what you’re talking about and he was getting like a 95% success with equalizing like that without a queen going missing. It always fascinated me how that works with simply an excluder and paper between two queens. And the results are great. I’ve thought about how I truly need to equalize early on in order to help me prevent swarming and save time knowing where my colonies are in the growth process during the season. It always falls back on how much time I have. Ironically, even though it takes me a lot of time in the beginning and I don’t have it, it actually costs me more time as the season progresses. So I need to equalize and to do it with an excluder and paper has always seemed like it would actually be a time saving way. But I guess I still need to take time to move some brood around. These full time jobs just seem to be a hinderance. 😁😁

    Howdy Mike, thanks for sharing. I just cleared my bee yard of the winter debris yesterday am when the temps were below freezing and the bees were clustered. None of them seemed interested in me chain sawing within 8 feet of the hive. Good thing too, I wasn't looking forward to wearing a bee suit to do it. I have some strong colonies this year. I may even get some honey, if I can keep the bees out of the trees! Take care.

      I saw one of your shorts just now and things are shaping up with spring emerging looks like. I truly hope you get your hive rolling and a nice harvest. Bob Binnie says it best about when the hives peak. 4 frames of brood and bees with a flow or feed gets you a peaked colony in 7 to 8 weeks. So 6 frames drops that time down and so on and so forth. I let mine peak too early. Peak them right and you won’t have them in the trees

    Hey Mike, glad things are turning around. I guess I was confused how the destroyed hive was even able to make cells if there was no queen and it had been more than a few days since the storm. Must have had some viable eggs or really young larvae survive that rain and cold. But anyway, it looks like all is going well with it now. It has been a very strange spring here in my neck of the woods. We had a cold wet front move through yesterday and morning temps in the forties and highs in the fifties. For Texas that’s really unusual weather for the second half of April. Have caught 4 swarms and think have pretty much prevented swarming from my hives. Always look forward to your videos and hope the Lord provides the way for you to be with the bees more soon. God bless brother!

      @MikeBarryBees  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don’t like to split much after April because the mating flights for the queens become less and less likely to succeed. If I had some mated queens I’d split late. I think I’m going to combine some of them to make producers and others I’ll just prepare for the summer in order to make them producers next season. I think if I didn’t work full time, I’d do what you’re saying because I’d have more time on my hands to really mo it or them and if the splits failed I could recombine. Thanks for the comment!! Hi Mike, I really like your video's, you show things that real beekeepers run into. There are always things that are hard to explain or just plain can't be. I think i know why you are having trouble getting your bees to accept a new Queen. I have found that if they have any Queen cells in their hive they just won't accept a new Queen. I have had bees 55 years i have seen a little. The main thing is you do what you think you need to not what you read or been told. There are a lot of so called experts that i don't agree with. The way i raise Queens is to make a split just like a walk away. The Queenless hive will normally make from 10 to 15 cells. Leave these in the split until 2 days before time to hatch then make however many nucs you need for the amount of cells you have. The Alley method works really well to. that way you have laying Queens in 2 weeks.

    • @MikeBarryBees
      @MikeBarryBees  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Tha is and glad you like them. Actually, my cells this season just had bad queens it turns out. For whatever reason, they were smaller bees than a worker yet nice, long cells. So basically they turned into walk away splits. And those did take, so I was grateful. Just a crazy year, yet we’re having a great flow. Thanks for the comment and for the support!!

  • @DonaldFarmHoney
    @DonaldFarmHoney 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    Hey Mike,
    I was planning on combining 2 hives this weekend. I see you put the queen in the top box. Was that because of hive strength? The hive with the queen was weaker?

    • @MikeBarryBees
      @MikeBarryBees  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I was told years back to put a strong one on the top, but I didn’t want to do the flip flop and honestly, I’ve gotten to where I just throw them on top now days regardless. The hive with the queen was definitely weaker and smaller in this case. That’s why I preferred using newspaper.

  • @Ittiz
    @Ittiz 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    All those superseding cells all emerging at the same time happened to my hive. They kept trying to supersede the queen so I decided to requeen. I moved the original queen to a nuc and bought a queen. When I opened the hive to put the new queen in there were at least a dozen virgin queens in there (all from supercedure not swarm cells). I didn't want to kill them in case something went wrong so I was grabbing queen cages, throwing them in my pockets ect... Once I finally got every queen I installed my bought queen which had the genetics I wanted. Well, a week later I checked and they had freed her. She was a dark queen marked with a red dot. So I dug through the hive and found lots of eggs which was a good sign. Then I found a big fat golden queen with no dot! Clearly when I went on my queenapalooza escapade some of the queens must have already been out on their mating flights and came back and killed my purchased queen after she was released. You win some you lose some.

    • @MikeBarryBees
      @MikeBarryBees  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Ye, I would normally leave supersede cells in a healthy and normal hive, but those were emergency cells made from existing larvae rather than superseding cells that the queen lays an egg on a cup. But they did tear them down, which was good for the new queen.

      @MikeBarryBees  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I only run 9 frames in the honey supers and I love it. I draw them in ten frames and then once drawn I run them in 9 frame configuration. They can be drawn in 9 frame configuration if all frames are foundation and there is a really good flow. I don’t care for less than ten in a brood box though. Brood is always drawn out to the same length and then the honey put in annoys the brood they build out in the larger space and the frames are then all put of whack and are too big on top. All that said if you were talking about 9 frames in ten frame boxes.

    • @MikeBarryBees

      No actually they were emergency cells. A superseder cell is a cell in which a queen lays the egg. Emergency cells are made from existing larvae. Those were emergency cells. There was no queen in the hive. I’ve seen plants of long and beautiful emergency cells before. Swarm cells and supersede cells are both planned cells where eggs are laid in cups by the queen. Emergency cells are not.

    AND even with the ups an downs you have had this season I do not think there was even one part I disagreed with 🤔. Ya I think there must have been two queens in that one colony. Talking about using news paper to combine two colonies when I started with bees in 1968 that was one of the first things my grandfather taught me an I still use it every time . How is your hive in town doing now is it clearing up??. I think I have said I have always run Italian bees an been wanting to switch to something else well I had six colonies that the question didn’t make it back for what ever the reason was so I went an got carniolan queen to try so I will see how they do . I really like how the Italians build up but they built up way to early an it is a lot of work to keep them from swarming but luckily I have not had any swarms this year yet but I have gotten two swarms. I think you are on the right direction an your are going to come out great . Keep that tree there an have a thinking tree or a praying tree it all depends on just how bad it gets LOL. Always Thanks

      I know I replied to you, but it’s not showing up. So let’s try again. First, thanks for the reassurance!! Love hearing that from an experienced beekeeper. As far as the yards in town, they got their meds and now back to probiotics. I pinched the queens and let unmated queens go (when I use the ‘V’ word, TH-cam hides the comment. I think that’s where the first comment went😮) I will be checking them this weekend to see if they got mated and then another round of probiotics. They are just there for now and the goal is getting them healthy and working towards having them ready for winter. Only a few out there in the other stand have a shot at honey, but they were initially sick and down on bees as well, so only time will tell.

      @@MikeBarryBees well I am not sure about the experienced part it seems like I have been screwing up more an more. An in that I cought a very nice swarm so I let it stay in my swarm box around a week well that was great . So I
      moved it back to my home yard Thursday night late well I had a weak little split that went queenless so I
      Put them side by side an went back out Friday morning an was going to combine them. I started pulling frames an shaking bees got two done an looked at the larvae an it does not look good at all so I stopped shaking bees . Went an got my hive alive an my DFM an hive them a treatment of both of them. So I will probably lose the weak one an I
      Probably infected my great swarm . I think I have the mix that Bob used in his sick colony. WOW I went wild on that writing lol . Thanks Mike have a good weekend. Thanks
