    As an insurance appraiser, I look at at least 30 trailers a year with water leaks. Usually only one or two are aluminum sided. More expensive doesn't always mean less susceptible to leaks in my experience. Filon sided trailers have there issues too, depending on the manufacturer. Jayco is one of the more affordable units that don't usually have as many issues because of the way they vacuum press their filon skins to the backing board.

    I had to stop what I was doing and write you. I think it's important to tell you how awesome you were hosting this video. You are a talented presenter. I was just surfing on TH-cam and found you. I like all types of adventures. I currently drive a Honda CRV (sleep in back w/o seats) with a motorcycle carrier hitch and soon to be hauling a 240 lb. Honda Trail bike on the CRV (right off the hitch) for my adventures in the Sierra Nevada range in CA. Anyway, I like it when people write me and tell me they enjoyed my books or say "thanks" when I have flown them somewhere as an airline pilot. So I want pay it forward and remind you that you're awesome! Great job on the video. Smooth and informative.

      thats why you buy slightly used.. most trailers and RVs sit at storage centers 90% of the year as impulse buy. They realize its more than they bargained for or don't want to keep paying for storage and they sell it for cheap.

    • @WW-wf8tu
      @WW-wf8tu 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mindwreckRC So you pay less, but the problems remain. This is not like buying a used Toyota where fixing it up is money well spent. I don't harp on people for wanting into the camping world, I would do it, if there was a positive outcome to it. But one needs to know what they are getting into. And new is a crap shoot. Best buy is not a private owned slightly used either. Best buy is something from a rental company that has already done upgrades and regular maintenance before retiring it from their fleet.

    Years ago when we bought our first trailer, which seemed to be riddled with problems, I was speaking to an older guy at the dump station of the park we were at ( it's like gathering around the kitchen at parties - everyone meets at the dump station ), he had a giant, triple axle 5th wheel that my truck and trailer would have fit inside. After talking about the issues we were having, his response was; " they're all shit, doesn't matter the size, the brand or price - they are all built the same way". He said what you do is find the floorpan that suits what you want, then go find a dealer will look after you, because you are always going to have problems. A good dealer is more important than price, or features, or any of the flashy stuff that makes you buy it.
    This trailer being a Forest River product was likely built in the same factory as our Wolf Pup 16FQ - it's the same floorplan, with a few different features.
    I think you're a bit off on the aluminum siding though. There are far more cases of the fibreglass sides delaminating because of water seepage, that with the aluminum siding which mostly the same as what's on people's houses and is how trailers were built for many decades. It's only the last 25 or so years that the smooth sided fibreglass (or Azdel I think?), trailers have been around.
    Do a video where you take a trailer camping, from picking it up, parking at the site, hooking up everything, travelling with it - all that stuff.

      volvo09 so which is worse? Buy this for 15k and sell it for 8k (46% depreciation) in 1 year and lose $7,000 or buy a better one for 30k and sell it for 22k (27% depreciation) and lose $8,000 in 1 year? The better one cost you 15k more to buy and 1k more in depreciation for a total of $16k extra expenditure for the year. Will you make that up in tax write offs? You can do quite a bit with that extra 16k. Of course, that’s not including how much it costs you in finance costs and savings. But the monthly payment for a 13k loan is quite a bit less than a 28k loan.

That is in our opinion the best of the best, I have owned several smooth side travel trailers. ALL have over time suffered delamination and bubbled up underneath the skin. Just to prove the point they still make Ribbed aluminum siding on not just economy but also expensive ones, because campers in the know, look just for them when buying a camper. Ribbed siding is a little harder to clean but proven the best over the years for no leaking.

    Well I’m glad to see some videos on this type of RV I owned many and my current Jayco is similar to this and it’s the best choice I’ve made. The other thing I like about these style RV’s is that you can watch for certain layouts and models choose what you like and haggle haggle and haggle because unlike other vehicle RV’s of a certain type these can be had for at least 20% off a sale price, at least, and try to find the one you want as a leftover from the previous model year. Never pay MSRP, and don’t worry about dealers they usually have the worst service after the sale, on average; I’m not labeling good RV dealers, but average so I’m not loyal I just want the best deal. OH and if your in the USA never buy form Camping World unless you A. have your own financing or B. buy outright look them up you’ll see the dirty tricks the play on unsuspecting people especially first time RV buyers.

    "This review" Stephen, it was good. You were straight up honest that for nearly 20K, you get what you pay for. Now my advice for anyone reading my comment, don't spend your hard earned $ on a NEW camper. It is a crap shoot. You are better off buying a used one from a rental company. BECAUSE most of those companies re-enforce them with better materials. They clean them up AND do regular maintenance on them during their time in service. PLUS they fix any manufacturers defects that it comes with so you don't have to. And finally, obviously the price is going to be lower than new. So you get a hell of a lot more bang for your buck from buying a used one from a reputable renting agency. Buying a used one from a private seller is worse than new because it is more than likely the owners got tired of the problems they did not want to deal with and are just trying to unload it on you. So that is the best advice out there. Take my word on it, I have been doing research for months on this topic. ;)

    in Thinking about trailers...question one: do they make an ARCTIC INSULATION package which would survive minus -20F overnight without freezing the plumbing and the human inside. This ALL WEATHER unit would be used in the Pacific Northwest(PNW) along I-90 corridor for travel probably 2 axle and towed by an 2005 Chevrolet Astro awd! Thank you for your response! good work by the way!

    • @badgerpa9
      @badgerpa9 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      All the brands have some type of "4 season" trailers. Any trailer being used below freezing for awhile needs to be skirted and your water line needs a heat tape from the trailer to the faucet. Look at Montana if you can pull a 5th wheel or Cougar and you need the heat pads on the tanks, bigger propane bottles, heat tape in the A/C, fireplace heater, and someplace you can run the electricity. The heat tape on your water and all the other electric heat sources will help the propane furnace keep up on windy cold nights.

    This was an unusual review, I've never seen the defects and poor workmanship displayed so prominently. This is a very honest review. I like all the different floor plans available but the think the price is too high. Coleman makes a $12,000 camper that's bigger and has more features.

      MrJohnny8530 and the price difference! They may generally have a higher level build quality, or at least the appearance of better quality, but they often skimp on things like air conditioning, fridge size, stove size and room on the inside.

I would love to see you all rate and review campers like you do cars and trucks. Separate the cheap from the superior quality...the reliability, weights, how they hold up in elements (aluminum vs steel) etc. just a thought

    A Jeep Cherokee with a tow package has a 4500 lb tow capacity and 450 lb tongue weight could tow that, though a Grand Cherokee with a tow package and 6200 lb tow capacity could tow it with ease. The Toyota Tundra with tow package can only rated at 3500 tow capacity. Any American Built pickup can tow it with ease. I am not a fan of Tin and Stick trailers, though they are cheaper at first, maintenance tends to be more extensive and costly. I would move up to the Coachmen Apex Nano 187RB model with the same floor plan for a slightly more expensive to buy, but better unit for the longer term and having a similar weight and size. Both have similar size and floor plan models with a slide that makes them just about 300 lbs heavier. My pick would be the Apex Nano 191 RBS for a couple who plans on not traveling with children except very occasionally.

  • @eventhisidistaken
    @eventhisidistaken 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    ~4500 pounds is not something most small pickups could legally and safely tow. If you figure 15% of that weight is on the tongue, that's ~700 pounds by the time you fill the water tank and propane, which adds to payload, and also adds to rear axle weight on the tow vehicle. You will typically max out payload weight or rear axle weight before you max out GVWR. A half ton pickup could almost certainly handle it unless you go overboard with other toys and gear, but not many (any?) small pickups or SUVs could safely pull it.

    Second question; what does 18k in Canadian Dollars translate in USDs?

    Disappointing review. How is that thing powered while on the road? Having a fridge and freezer is pointless if there is no power while on the road. Does it get 12VDC from the main vehicle and use an inverter? Is the fridge and freezer powered by propane? That propane tank on the frame by the hitch... is that a spare tank or thee propane tank?
    That Murphy bed.... ridiculous. It is basically a mattress lowered onto another mattress. Redundant. And the angle when that thing is latched in place... less than 90 degrees. Being a 6’2” tall person, no way I can sit back and relax on that sofa without hitting my head.
    Is there a flat screen somewhere in that thing?

    RVs are built like crap these days, and big companies buying-out the smaller quality builders ruin them. Don't expect them to last. And warranty doesn't mean anything, because dealers don't give a shit about warranty work.

    every trailer should come with top build quality of what it offers. If you are charging a price you need to make sure the customer is getting top product in that realm for their buck.

  • @Citizen-pg8eu
    @Citizen-pg8eu 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    People should know that the letters mean something. For example, RB means rear bathroom. Once you break the code, it speeds up the searching, all of the trailers look the same anyway. The more bells and whistles you get, the more things you have that can break. Tell new campers that they will use their external speakers only once, playing music that can be heard outside your campsite is extremely rude, and people will get even with you if you do not turn down your noise after they ask nicely.

    Actually, metal siding has an advantage over fiberglass. My hubby builds RVs and he said that the insulation is better in metal. It’s just foam boards behind fiberglass and actual insulation behind metal.
