Life from Non Life - How Evolution Powers Everything ~ Professor LEE CRONIN

  • The search for the origin of life is nothing new. Abiogenesis - life from non life - has fascinated and frustrated science for countless years. But what if we've been going about it the wrong way?
PROFESSOR LEE CRONIN holds the Regius chair of chemistry at the University of Glasgow. His primary interests are in the creation of artificial lifeforms using inorganic chemistry.
MARK from Evolution Soup talks to Lee about his 'Inorganica' experiments, the nature of living things, why inorganic 'dead stuff' matters and - most importantly - why evolution is the engine that powers it all.

I recall 7th grade science class where the topic of the definition of life was raised. The teacher used a small combustion engine to illustrate the differences and similarities between living and non living things. Fast forward many years and I remember laying in bed with my ex wife 30+ yrs ago and saying that in our lifetime, they will create life from non living matter. Lee Cronin is pretty bad ass. I've heard him talk before but I'll be following his work a bit more closely now. Fun stuff.

It strikes me that complaining that thus-and-such is "destroying the mystery" is just a fancy way of defending willful ignorance.
At the end, I think I see what he's saying about evolution being force-like, but rather than draw an analogy to gravity, I think the better expression might be that evolution, like the second law of thermodynamics, is a unstoppable pattern in the universe.

    • @lrvogt1257

They didn't land the Saturn 5 and Starship is bigger with twice the thrust. The lunar lander was small with 1/6 the gravity. (That said, I don't like the man one bit)
I'm curious about how this hypothesis may intersect with Jeremy England's work and Constructor Theory. I am just barely keeping up with the concepts but they are fascinating.

Defining "faith" as "something that can't be falsified" renders science a faith too.
Science searching for LAWS OF NATURE implies there exists a system called NATURE (practically a new name for GOD of conventional religions) that determines the flow of all events in the universe, IRRESPECTIVE OF WHAT WE OURSELVES DO IN IT, which cannot be falsified either.
Science is a faith, but what is important to note is that faith can be constructive or destructive.
Faith, I guess, is more appropriately defined as "accepting something as possible even when all evidence indicate otherwise", which in fact implies the earlier definition too.
Thus faith is not essentially negative (meaning wrong, bad or evil ~ as different from the self contradicting definitions of this word in science and mathematics).
The best example of a constructive faith was that of Wright Brothers, who believed it possible for humans to fly when all evidence proved otherwise.
Interestingly science, with its current criterion of proof, PREDICTIONS tallying with results of experiments and/or observations, is even more destructive than religions as it doesn't guarantee that its inventions (yes!) won't cause more harm than naturally exist.
This could only change if science sets PREVENTION of evil (predation, disasters, diseases ~ which include all birth defects, all weapons manufacture and all violence ~ and death) as the only criterion of proof of accuracy of the laws it invents.

I can't t wrap my head around ' nothing. Outside of mathematical equations can anyone, really? Same with eternity. The old conundrums. So much we don't know. • @okuno54
      @okuno54 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Starting at 26:55, Lee already addresses your critique. He's says that you can't jumble a bunch of junk around and come up with an iphone---or by analogy a living cell---purely by chance. Instead, some information---by his definition a form of life---was required. However, the life that made the first cells doesn't have to be a cell itself; it could have been some more primitive living/life-like thing. If jumbling some parts around can create an extremely primitive information system, then that can make a slightly more complex information system, which can make a even slightly more complex information system, and so on, until eventually these information systems are complex enough to make information systems as complex as cells.
Lee is putting the work in to see what kind of primitive information systems could plausibly have been randomly jostled into existence. I assume you do more with your life than just posting youtube comments that foster hopelessness?

So, if things are allowed to exist eternally - the simplest explanation for 'Existence/Reality' is that the Cosmos, in which our universe started to grow about 14Bya (like a bubble of gas in a glass of soda-water,) is itself eternal. The molecules Carbon Dioxide in the gas bubble in soda don't magically appear from nowhere - they are distibuted throughout the liquid and just condense to make the bubble.
