  • This video will be of interest to fans of heavy crossbow arrows for large game where high arrow momentum and a high FOC% (Forward of Center) is desired. Using the system shown here, it is feasible to quickly build strong arrows in the 700 grain to 900 grain range (and even greater) if desired. The objective is pass through shots on large game (buffalo, 1500 lbs.+) There is no substitute for a razor sharp broad head. One of our top flight hunting customers at Kodabow has achieved pass through shots on Cape Buffalo and Hippopotamus using Kodabow Crossbows and heavy, high FOC arrows. We subscribe to using heavy arrows and recommend reading reports from Dr. Ed Ashby on elements that contribute to arrow penetration. Once a heavy arrow is in flight and encounters obstacles including wind, bone and tissue, the heavy arrow tends to decelerate more slowly and just keep going as compared to lighter weight arrows.

Very smart solution. Best I've seen yet.

These brass ferrule modules are fine and dandy for large diameter shafts. Though some hunters prefer small diameter crosssbow arrows, particularly the 0.166 and 0.204 series. For these, you'd need to line darn near the entire shaft with brass to get up to 1000 grains. Fortunately, tungsten exists and is fairly inexpensive. A 5/32" dia x 7" long tungsten welding rod weighs ~650 grains and just fits inside a 0.166 shaft. Seat it behind your front insert and you're easily up to 1000 grains before screwing in your broadhead. Your FOC and penetration will be off the charts with that setup. And the arrow will still be steerable in its flight, especially if 22" or 24" long.

I've got a similar inner footer/heavy insert design for my compound bow's arrows. This does change the dynamic spine of the arrow however. How did you test if this new built shaft was stiff enough for the requirements needed from the crossbow you built them for?

Thats what customer service is for. Lol.

Dynamic spine is critical for recurve bows and longbows to achieve proper arrow flight and less critical in compound bows providing we stay close to mfg. recommendations and not subject a weak arrow to a heavy compound bow poundage. In a crossbow, the forces are longitudinal along the arrow shaft and making a stiffer and heavier arrow has little effect except for point of impact due to weight in our experience.

@@Kodabow spine is most definitely critical for compound bows I’d say even more so than long bows and recurves as compounds exert much more energy. How are you testing these to be sufficient? Are you getting same poi for field points and fixed blade broadheads?

@@90goldtsiawd No man, they really dont exert more force than a recurve or longbow. The difference is the mechanical advantage. Kodabow is right, at the end of the day you just want to make sure the arrow is stiff enough for the xbow.

You lost me at 2 mins 28 ("cutting down the screw from home depot"). How do you make screws into those things you were fitting into the arrow shafts ? Where did those little components and longer components come from ?

He used a dremel tool to grind the heads off the screws, leaving a threaded stud.

    Can a 130lbs crossbow fire a 600gr bolt?

    • @Kodabow
      @Kodabow  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes ...a low powered crossbow can fire a 600 grain arrow but the ballistics will suggest close ranges. While not directly comparable, a traditional 65 lb recurve bow shooting a 600 grain arrow can be deadly on a 700 lb elk at 20 yards. Like all shooting activities, range time can validate expectations.

Why not just fill the arrow with sand and glue or water or plasticine putty ?.... how about hot glue down the shaft.. or salt or sugar

you don't want the weight to shift, it will have a negative effect on accuracy

  • @mr.skeptical3071

Doesn't that really weaken the spine? You may have to cut it down to a 18" bolt

The design with the higher FOC was tested and used on game animals very successfully - so "field proven" validation.

dont really wanna give you big (i kill 4 fun )gamers tips...but filling the shaft with air gun pellets is about 25times cheaper then that goofy brass insert that probably cost more then the arrow to manufacture...motorbike spoke wrapped in paper fit nice aswel. 😐👍

He's trying to increase FOC not just make a heavier arrow. And both your suggestions suck unless you just want to shoot some $80 ebay recurve in your back yard at phone books.

both my ideas are only to make the arrow heavy...videos titled building heavy arrow... we have £ here and my x bow cost over 200 . i am guilty of fone book shooting tho but not with expensive heavy arrows .
