A few weeks ago, I saw a tatty one in an antique shop window in North Yorkshire. It was priced at £750.....
I cannot believe I used to own one of these. 💰
Me too. From memory mine was around £30 new back in 1970/71......
Budgie
Chipper
Tomahawk
Chopper
Chipper and tomahawk were similar size.
As mentioned, mk1 had a separate stem and handlebars , not fixed
Holy cow! That's US$2,800 (6/7/24). I have an unrestored just like this, was curious what people are paying for these.
Worlds gone mad..some folk have more money than they know what to do with..theyve got a new X5..then its the private plate..what can i buy now..?!?..a Raleigh Chopper
The saddest part... This isn't even a MKI (Mark 1). It's a MKII (Mark 2). This is immediately evident due to the welded handlebar stem. "A sucker born every minute...."
basicly a mk1 but a late one 71 - 72 crossover model
There are some clueless buyers out there..
It's not even right.
The MK1 DIDN'T have fixed position handlebars.
😅😅😅
This is a mk1 cross-over and has some mk2 parts among them fixed handlebars.and mk2 sissy bar.
It looks a bit like a bitza to me.
I sold these bikes from new and repaired them from 1972 onwards.. and the Raleigh dealer I worked for, sold the Mark 1 available at the time in only 3 colours Yellow, Orange, or Metallic Green.
There were no cross overs, what so ever.
Once the Mk1's were all sold, the less appealing fixed handlebar Mk2 replaced them.. also with the gear knob replaced with a T- Bar shift, the 'Arrow Wedge' rear end frame, and a much shorter saddle, with a notice upon the white strap, saying the seat was not used or designed to carry a passenger (or words to that effect)
The fixed handlebars, was a ridiculous attempt to stop the very dangerous speed wobble, when descending long, steep hills.. but it did infact do nothing, except make the riding position a lot less comfortable.
I’ve got five original mk1 choppers in original condition couple rare being HBR and HBC
So I’m happy see this
I have an unrestored just like this with fixed handlebars.
