The mountain is considered as the sacred place for many Koreans (both South and North), as the mythology says it is where the founder of Ancient Korea was born. Of course, the real reason behind why there is an airport is that "officially" Kim Jong Il and Kim Jong Un were born in the mountain. The regime uses this tale as a propaganda to justify the Kim Dynasty's reign.
