  • In Episode 39, we tackle a question we've all heard before: Aren't you cold living on a canal boat | narrowboat? The honest answer is that yes, narrowboats ARE cold in the winter UNLESS you take the proper steps to stay warm and toasty.
    We look at those steps in turn and explain how they make a difference.

    Winnie Wallace... There's nothing wrong with being cold occasionally. Tilly's got the right idea, stay cool, it's healthier.

    Hi CRT (Carol Rob and Tilly, obviously, not the Canal and River Trust :) ) One thing I would say is, with a Webasto or Eberspacher it's advisable (so my VERY trustworthy boat mechanic tells me) to run them for a bit fairly regularly..maybe once a fortnight or at least once a month. You don't have to run them for hours, maybe just 15-30 minutes. That gives them and the heating system a bit of a short workout. It may also highlight any problems before you may actually have to rely on it!
    I've just realised...I've caught up! Wooohooo! Although I will go back and look at some of the Liberty makeover videos with Anita to see what tips we can get for doing our own improvements on our boat :)

    Terrific, informative video. You guys make a great comedy double act! Carol, this week's free tip; if you want to stop Rob from breathing and steaming up the windows, I find a pillow on the face works quite well. Stay tuned for more helpful tips. See you soon, Chris (p.s. my Facebook is back up, so expect a friend request soon).

    Enjoyed this-thank you. We are in a marina with double glazed windows. I can assure you that we still have issues with the frames and condensation, even had ice three days ago (minus 7 outside). Solution is thermal break windows, however I was not prepared to pay the extra £££ to have these fitted. I agree, ten minutes with a micro fibre cloth is no real hardship!!

    I have had an 8kw multifuel log burner installed in my house and I have tried various different coals but the best by far is Columbian smokeless it burns for ages at a high temp and doesn't leave alot of ash it also makes a really good bed for logs

    Really enjoying your videos and the perspective you provide. Being in the US is unlikely I'll ever be on a narrowboat, but it's definitely on my bucket list. I'm just wondering why you drive on the left side of the road, but boat on the right side of the waterway?

    • @NarrowboatLiberty
      @NarrowboatLiberty  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Dan, we’ve honestly no idea why we cruise on the American side of the canal! Recently we had a new hirer on a narrowboat pass us on the wrong side and it was very disorientating! We advised him of the rules and hopefully he didn’t collide with anyone else! Thanks for your kind comment! XOX

    @Debba521 ปีที่แล้ว

    Here's the thing I don't understand, never having been on a narrowboat. So many boats seem to be fitted with central heating. As such, why is a fuel burning stove necessary? Is it more costly to run the central heating? Or can you only run it when the engine is running?

    • @NarrowboatLiberty
      @NarrowboatLiberty  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Debba! It’s more common to find a solid fuel stove, partly historically (barges had coal and wood stoves in the boatmen’s cabins to cook on and keep the family warm). That was before central heating. The tradition has carried on, though few boats have the ‘range’ type of stoves the working canal boats used, because of the space they take up. Central heating operates regardless of whether the engine is running or not, but the ignition and water pump uses electricity, so drains the batteries over time, whereas a solid fuel stove uses zero electricity. Diesel fired central heating is sensitive to contaminants like water or diesel bug in fuel, so can be unreliable unless the fuel system is well maintained. The ignition and burning components and also the water pump are potential sources of failure, such that it’s fair to say the heat is less reliable from a central heating system than it is from a stove. I would say it’s more useful to have a stove in this small space than a central heating system, whereas in a house of several rooms, the opposite is true! Hope that answers your question? Hugs xox
