Day 1: And So It Begins, CDT Thru-hike 2024

- I intend to hike the Continental Divide Trail (CDT) in 2024 and will vlog my experience. Follow me under "Old Man and the CDT."
I am Mike Current, 61-years-old, and retired military. I served for over 30 years in the US Army.
After retirement, I opened two small businesses. But after a few years, I sold both businesses because they were taking time away from pursuing personal goals, like hiking and sailing.
I hiked the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) in 2020 and Appalachian Trail (AT) in 2022. I vlogged (video journaled) my experiences under "Old Man and the PCT" and "Old Man and the AT", respectively.
I sailed around the Chesapeake Bay in my Tayana 37 sailboat over the summer of 2023 and vlogged the experience under the TH-cam channel "Old Man and the Sea."

Awesome..I did 22yrs Army 11B4J3...I seriously want to hike the CDT an PCT.
Old Man, you are a couple of years younger than me. I just decided to send you a note now, as it is Summer and I am too busy to watch too many videos. I did the AT in 2019 and watched your 2020 PCT journey to help me. It took me three years 2021-4 to complete the PCT. Anyway, I will watch all your CDT videos for your Triple Crown this Winter. Hope you do well. I'm not sure I can do the CDT. However, I will watch you videos in a few months and they will help me decide whether to try (and probably like you, if I decide to do it I will, even if it takes two or three years - arthritis sucks!). Good luck on the rest of your adventure. I'll watch it all sometime after Thanksgiving. BTW, THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE.

Triple Crown! Let’s go!!
What percentage of CDT thru hikers have thru hiked another long distance trail, would you guess?
Naps, I would guess less than 20 percent are attempting to triple crown. Most have done either the PCT or AT, and are doing the CDT as their second long hike. There is also a number that have done some type of long hike, like the AZT or JMT, but the CDT is their first triple crown hike. And even a couple where the CDT is the first long trail. Like a young gentleman at my place in Silver City, the CDT is the trail that called to him.
Great start, and best wishes for your adventure. Thanks so much for sharing with us that due to circumstances of life cannot get out there yet...

Congrats on starting your CDT hike! I followed your vlogs when you hiked the AT. You completed in like 3 or 4 months I think. You were very consistent and organized. I'm wondering why Log Man carries the log. Do you know? That is so unusual and seems so cumbersome.

Great Start for your triple crown. Are you using the same camera you used on the AT? Love your style of videos. Use to getting the videos at 5:00am on the AT, so have to account for the time change. I have seen some videos where the water caches were out, so be careful drinking it all. Again, great to see you out on the trail and sending videos. Be Strong, Be Safe, and thanks for taking us on this journey.

Why is he carrying a log?
He just does. But on each of his long hikes, Logman uses it to raise money for charity.
If you think about it, what is left on the earth that hasn't been done by man before? South Pole, North Pole, space, etc. every mountain on the Earth. He's doing something that's never been done before by another man.
Was wondering the same thing, but carrying foe charity? Cool. I’d like to know more, what cause, etc.

Awesome! How is the trail typically marked? Are those posts with the CDT logo every mile or so? What is the red line vs the blue line? Is that for this segment of the trail only or is that for a significant portion of the trail?
There are metal signs, posts, and cairns. And the number varies. It seems whenever I need one, I can't find one. Definitely not as well marked as the AT or PCT.
I googled him is a very interesting person. I understand his motive. There's not much left on this earth that hasn't been done by another human being before. So why not carry a log on a triple crown? Because it's never been done before.
He is currently raising money for alzheimer.
