As a Puerto-Rican and Italian man I always took tremendous pride in Roberto Clemente. His death affected me very much, knowing he died trying to help others gave me a sense of pride also.

Willie Mays played winter ball in Puerto Rico. He was team mate of Roberto with the Santurce Crabbers of the winter league and became very good friends. The respect and appreciation they showed each other was genuine.
Running, hitting, fielding, throwing, Roberto was great at all of them. Greatest throwing arm ever. Awesome player. I had the luck to see him play live in about 6 games. Amazing.

I'm a Chicago Cubs fan , all my life, but my favorite baseball player is Roberto Clemente. It is the only baseball jersey that I have in my closet. He had the greatest arm of any outfielder I've ever seen in my lifetime. 🇵🇷⚾️
What a hero. He's gone but he will never be gone at all, since his legacy continues on those of us who try to excel in what we do. Not to prove ourselves or receive praise, but to help each other.

I remember exactly where I was, who I was with, the make of car, the weather, everything... the moment I heard the news of his death on the radio. I was never able to get back into baseball after that. He was my first hero.

Many of us were amazed about his hitting, running the bases. But I was more intrigued by that throwing amazing cannon of an arm, He could have thrown that ball 500 feet, the amazing part was that the ball looked like a straight line rocket. Mr Clemente will always be talked about for the existence of Baseball.
All that power in a 180 pound body. This guy had it all, the most complete ball player ever to lace up a pair of cleats.

Solid hitter, great defensive outfielder,outstanding runner, at that time the best arm . What else could you want? By the way, a great human being.
Maybe the greatest outfielder of all time and all we see is his batting. Common! That defense which was the best I ever seen.
Got a.chance to see.Clemente live 6 or 7 times. He was the most elegant ballplayer I ever saw. He looked better than anybody else on tje field.

I was 15, from just outside pittsburgh and I cried all day. I still get wet eyes every time I watch one of his videos

Clemente's break-out year 1971. Sad ending in 1973. I received his autograph in 1972. I was also a LL All-star in 1972 at 10 years-old (pitched, 1st base) and played right-field in the all-star game (beat out a hit to first - threw out a runner from right-field). We had to win the game to get the small trophy, which we did. During the game, a fight broke out over a call by the umpire. Who was fighting? The parents. I'm sure parents are much worse these days. RIP the Clemente Era. Today, I'm a physics professor. Life is strange, but so is the Universe.
Break out year? I would say that winning batting titles in the 60's indicate that Roberto was already a super star, whether any one outside of Pittsburgh wanted to acknowledge it or not, he was already close to 3000 hit in '71, no, I would not call it a break out year, '71 was the year when he showed the world what they were missing all of those other years.

@@TheCangrejo12 I eat beans and refried beans. What's your excuse? Racist? Don't you mean ethnic? I lived with a Hispanic family in Miami when I played pro baseball (winter league). I won $500 throwing a baseball over 400 feet at the Orange Bowl in Miami. Roberto Clemente would have been impressed with my arm, which I patterned after his throwing motion though I was a lefty.
1971 was not his breakout year. He was NL MVP in 1966 and won 4 batting titles (I think it was 4) in the 60s. He had already established himself as one of the best in baseball by the time the 1971 World Series rolled around. I think his performance on a national stage (remember, he did not play in a big city) in 1971 brought him a lot of attention and showed the ignorant how great of a player he was.
