I am obsessed with the ex era, it’s all I’ve been buying. I wish more people would make TH-cam content on ex era! Thanks for doing this. Keep it coming, please 😃
@@moonboy5851 These are great ideas! I covered the chase cards a bit in my recent EX era crash course video, but I agree that I should do a video on tier lists and ex vs WOTC. thanks for the ideas! i'll be sure to give you a shoutout.
its funny I have pretty much the exact same memories about lugia ex and wailord ex. I also remember the 200 damage charizard ex! The outdated CGI hits me in the feels haha. Love your videos!
I was a kid during this era and its super addicting to me to collect the cards I wanted back then in psa 9. I think theres a great chance of these going up in value, especially the sealed product. even the light packs have a chance of a sick reverse holo. Cards/slabs wise its unpredictable because while the supply is a lot lower than WOTC so is the demand, and also the psa pops are rising pretty quick. I can see those pop numbers doubling or tripling (i.e ex emerald going from 5k to 15k) in the next few years. I also think the prices of these are gonna peak in like 2035 onwards ahaha. thats when our age group gets seriously wealthy.
I grew up from Base Set through Unseen Forces so the ex era (Pre-Delta Species) are my favorite sets. Currently working on collecting all holos + ex's from each of the sets. The graded cards from this era are pretty pricey already but finding raw copies hasn't been too bad.
I was born in 1996 so i went through the initial wotc era which is still my favorite, however, i will agree that EX era stuff is just more rare, people dont realise it yet how underprinted EX sets were compared to something like jungle, fossil, gym sets etc.. e-readers were shortprinted and crystal cards are on the level as gold stars... EX and DP era was like a lost era since by 2004 everyone pretty much moved on to yugioh or beyblade or other hobbies, pokemon just wasnt a fad anymore, the last set i remember as a kid that i liked was Team rocket returns, beautiful set, and after that i moved on to yugioh and pretty much stayed with yugioh till 2008, 2009.. even though i agree EX era cards have a potential to be much bigger than they are, i still think most of us grew up with wotc after all
Totally here to support you brotha ! Amazing and nostalgic story bro btw congrats on the job and all that , I truly agree with you but smpratt doesn’t believe in this era at all . Either do others but pokenomics Jake does because anything can be nostalgic for anyone ! That’s what’s important I’m around your age but older and I’m very impressed with your knowledge. I do this all day everyday and you showed me a completely new half deck i ever knew about congrats I’m still trying to get my girl to let me buy it lol 😂 btw I have several gold star zards and the last one I bought raw NM was $470 which wasn’t bad at all and I ended up selling it at collect a con for $2500 plus a unbreon 1st Ed from neo dis in a 9
I grew up in the early WOTC Era. The EX Era looks more attractive to me today though, especially the silver holo border EX's. Also I love the holos where just the Pokemon has the holo on it, Delta Species. My all time favorite Set is Team Rocket bc I actually pulled my first holo Charizard. I was disappointed that the artwork just showed Charizard's back, but that will forever be a special moment in my childhood.
Thanks for sharing! I totally agree that the silver border EXs are something special. Holos like delta species that just illuminate the pokemon itself are pretty unique. I am not sure why pokemon hasn't done this since with the exception of niche releases like the shinies in black and white. I'd love for them to go back to that style for a generation
we must be a similar age then cus I grew up with these as well, legit the same story about someone saying they had a wailord with 200hp, I didn't believe them til they showed me the card haha
@@Rasukix nice to meet someone of similar age. I feel like most of the content is made by WOTC kids so its always nice to meet someone from a different era
2 weeks ago i learned to submit my own pokemon cards for grading because of the $15 psa bulk special. So i have been submitting all reverse holos from the ex era. About 200 cards so far.
I would have to disagree with you on the nintendo E series rarity. Indeed those sets had shorter print runs than base but the most limited of all sets of pokemon tcg has got to be the Wotc E series cards…only 3 sets and all are very very rare and extremely hard to find these cards even in beat condition. I judge rarity of sets by seeing what’s still available on the market and honestly I can still find almost all e series cards of the ex era on pokeorder but nothing form the wotc era not even common cards.
I appreciate your perspective! It depends on how you look at it I guess. I agree that those WOTC e series cards are very short printed so I can certainly entertain that they may be rarer, but I find its easier to get those than ex era in good condition. From my experience when nintendo took over the print quality went down and because of that WOTC english cards are easier to find in mint condition then lets say ex era holos. Just what I've noticed, but you very well could be right. its all speculation.
@@athleteantiquities thanks for your respectful response. I’m not sure how you don’t have more views or is more out there like all the other youtubers like pokerev. You give real insight on things us the viewer would wanna know about pokemon. I too am 31 yr old today and remember very well how I ignored the whole ex time because I was spending my money on video games instead as I only worked a part time job and made enough to spend on food and games. Today I have a much better position and can easily afford most of these cards with the exception of some that are insanely priced. You deserve my respect and I hope you make it there one day like the other TH-camrs out there. Thanks for sharing good info with us on pokemon.
@@doneropersaud1607 I really appreciate all your kind words. It would be amazing to gain more traction but one positive about being small is I can have good conversations with all of the viewers. I like your perspective of initially ignoring the ex era, because I can certainly see how many people probably stopped caring about pokemon when it changed hands from WOTC. I love the e series era so I think if I ever complete my ex era goals ill move backwards to those cards. all of the art even down to the commons was beautiful in those three sets.
I mean its already happening. just before the covid boom I was picking up ex era holos for $1 a piece NM on troll and toad and ebay, and now those same cards are 10x or more from that. I still think this era is coming into its own, and there is room to grow alot in my opinion. Populations are crazy low compared to WOTC.
@@athleteantiquities “just before the covid boom” but most cards regardless of era surged in price due to overall demand for pokemon. RS came out in early 2000s right? Kids who grew up during that time are already way past the point where they have disposable income for cards. We’ve already received RS and DP remakes since then and there hasn’t been any huge increase in price for cards from those eras. Not saying that they’ll *never* go up in price, but I think there has already been enough time passed for RS and DP era cards.
@@RubberYen I disagree because I am that age group. I grew up with late EX era and I just graduated college and entered the workforce a few months ago. I have only recently gained access to disposable income, and everyone else my age who grew up with end of EX early DP will be in the same boat. DP came out in 07, so people that were 7 when those cards came out are just graduating college.
@@athleteantiquities I had the same thought as you did last year because gen 4 hype was at an all time high with the release of BDSP, but in the end it really didn’t do anything to the market. I mean, what other factor is there to make people buy more DP era cards? Unless pokemon as a whole gets more renewed interest and more collectors enter the scene, I don’t really see DP era stuff going anywhere. Not to mention RS era is much older than DP and the people who grew up with those cards are older than us and a good chunk of those cards tend to fly under the radar. I’m in the same age group as well and I’ve been making money since I was 18 through either PT jobs/side gigs so I’ve been able to buy stuff in regards to my hobbies for a while now. Obviously, I’m just one example out of millions of ppl that grew up with RS/DP cards, but I’m pretty sure there are many ppl out there that have found ways to make money before/during college.
@@RubberYen Ya you make a good point. There was a noticeable price increase but I agree its been smaller than I thought. This video is entirely an opinion and it could very well be wrong. These ex era holos could stagnate and never increase in price. In the end, that would be good for collectors like you and I because we can get these same cards cheaply. I appreciate your insight!
Agreed. Gold stars have taken off, some exs like lugia have taken off, and the general market is starting to look at them, but even compared to late WOTC its nothing. An ex era holo can have 1/10th the population of a Aquapolis holo and sell for 1/10th of the price which is wild.
@@cardboardorigins Most holos from that set sell for over $1k in a 10 at the minimum, with cards like Tyranitar and others selling for close to $3k.
