We camped across the river in 1967. Couldn’t help but notice the whistle. Younger brother and I rode behind the Dixiana Shay. I returned there in 1975 and rode behind the Tuolumne Heisler. I may not get back there in my lifetime. I’m in Minnesota. I’m glad I can watch these videos.

This is the perfect example why you using a Shay or any other geared steam locomotive to use this railroad. Love to see that and hope for a bright future! ❤

I rode this train in 1968, and the Heisler too. What a great ride. I was just out of the Navy and stayed with my Aunt and Uncle in San Jose.

I was here with my parents back in October of 2002 while on a tour. Couldn't believe how massive the trees were. You actually had to go up to one and touch it. Some burn marks on the bark of some of the trees were more than 300 years old. Would sure like to go back again for a visit. Maybe after I retire in six years. Wonderful memories.

Rode this in the early 70s with my parents and siblings, Beautiful country and a lot of fun. I didn't see the big trestle in this video only the small one. Happy to see that it is still running. Thank You for the memories.

Especially Sonora Shay # 7. It's my favorite engine in the railroad.

Great vid! Roaring Camp is definitely one of the best railroad experiences in California.

I was up there just last year. (For the first time!) We camped right across the river from the camp itself and I was tormented by steam and diesel sounds until the day we actually visited. I really liked the ride, and Roaring Camp itself is very interesting. While I was unable to ride "the beach train" as they call it, I did drive the whole Big Trees & Pacific line from the bridge north of Felton all the way down to the coast (and managed to catch the train at both ends of the route)
One of my favorite elements of the narrow gauge line is the old spiral trestle. It's very cool to see the remnants of the unfortunately destroyed bridge circling through the treetops. It was also a great deal of fun running up and down (and watching the other passengers' reactions) to the incredible grades of the switchback.
I've visited both of California's shay strongholds (the above as well as the Yosemite Sugar Pine Railroad) and this is definitely my favorite.

I've visited both of CA's Shay strongholds, too. I've also visited the San Diego Railroad Museum (the original home of Cass Shay #11.)

Found it by accident when we visited my wee sister in Los Gatos. Went out a run in the car and went over the hill to Boulder Creek then headed south. Stopped at Felton and heard the whistle. Was the last train that day so headed back the next day. Was a great day out.

My friend owns stock in the company, can ride for free. I lived across the river from the RR and donated my left over lube oil back in the day when you could do that. Lots of fun.

Nope couldnt hear ya. The sound of the Westinghouse compressor on-board was making so much racket! --- that's the loud Woosh! Woosh! Woosh! Whoosh! Whoosh! pounding sound everyone is hearing. Replenishing air tanks for the air brakes, for those that are not familiar will brake systems.

Apparently the crew don’t like it because it rides rough and there’s very little room in the cab. It’s also prone to wheel slip.

The beach train is an hour, and the steam train through the ancient forest of redwoods is about 75mins,
