That shower is amazing and I can't believe that it hasn't been used more often in the modern vans.
Right? With some minor improvements it would be very usable.
It´s pretty awesome, but there´s actually another great concept that has come to my attention. In Europe, they´re selling kind of a switching bathroom for Mobiles with limited space. You enter it and you´ll find your toilet and washbowl, in there. But there is like a door-handle next to the mirror on the wall, and when you pull it over, the washbowl tilts up to the wall, the toilet rotates out of the way and your shower appears from the other side. It absolutely maxes out the given space, and it works perfectly.
Europe and Asia have the next gen innovative class b and b+ campers. Many start at $60k USD. The US government blocks importation, so Americans are stuck with shitty high cost RVs.
Just watched your video...good stuff! We have a 2003 Rialta, and we LOVE IT! One thing you did not mention in your video is that the passenger's front seat swivels all the way around to face the back so the "desk" becomes a functional prep area/dining table/card playing area. We leave the back bed area down as a bed full-time, and use the front desk/table for everything else. Perfect for our uses! Thank you.

Did u fo the custom work if removing ac, install solar and lithium batteries? Live in Portland area, if you have any good solar techs you can recommend id appreciate it.
@@NoNameInNW I removed the generator and installed the lithium battery and inverter etc myself. I tied it into the charge circuit from the relay up front, and my Rialta had a small solar panel on it when I bought it. I was always a low power user, so the 20A I had coming from the coach batteries and alternator was enough for me.
There is someone named Gordon, at Edge Vanworks in California who does a lot of work for another RV group I’m a part of. He might be a good person to talk to, he is knowledgeable and greatly trusted. He may be willing to work on the Rialta. Or he may have a recommendation for you.
This has some many cool features. Your right manufacturers should take note as these would be great in new builds today.

@John Kuehn Manufacturers discovered how much money they could make on them, especially if they “streamlined” the build. As an example, the iconic GMC motor home 23-foot model’s MSRP was about $13,500, which is about $83,000 in today’s money. There is no way you’d ever be able to buy a comparable rig now for $83K.
You've definitely put in some good custom work in that rig! I'd agree with your several comments that modern RVs don't have many of the functional and convenient features of the Rialta! I am sure you'll be enjoying your time in it!

We go to look at our first ever Rialto.. it’s so funny we had never seen one before but we knew we wanted something small.. we didn’t want a big motorhome, didn’t want a little tiny van… I was on craigslist and I seen Rialta about 10 minutes from here, we will look at it tomorrow… We went to Eugene Oregon yesterday and we seen for the first time somebody that had one..3 hours later we pulled into the same rest stop..LOL she let us look in side .. We go home and I hit the internet..then I found you… Thank you so much for all your doing.. You a a job to listen .. OH I am praying your health remains perfect..

Your updates are a real inspiration. I found 2003 rialta model hd in Oregon and nearly bought it, tomorrow I'll be testing an hd model similar to yours. My concern is needing to do major expensive repairs. I'm a handyman like you, but don't have the electric experience required to design and instal new lithium batteries and electric items.
After you spent all the time learning about the rialta and doing the updates id love to learn your pros and cons list for a recently retired couple to get the rialta compared to a traditional b+ or small c rv. Thanks for all you have done for fellow travelers..

@@TravelingSolo we drove an hd but it had too many repair needs. Also drive an fd with two single beds in back. Engine was rebuilt, everything worked, so getting it checked out by mechanic next couple of days and then buy it. Will put a cooler between the passenger seat and back chair since the fridge is small in this one. Love some of the upgrades you did. Definitely get the blackout cellular blinds. Put in better cup holder for passenger side.

Wow, I love it! I've never seen one before. I'm working on building out a shuttle bus (in the most basic way as I have very few skills) and I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE the expanding bathroom idea! It actually looks fairly simple and I think I could do it. Thanks for the great video!

@@TravelingSolo oh goodness, I’m not talented with my build at all. I’m a 55 year old grandma and am clueless how to build, but somehow my bus still has the basics of what I need. I really enjoy going out on weekends and will likely hire someone to help build out a van when I retire. I call my bus my “practice” vehicle. I live in ND and it’s hard to find anyone here who could help teach me what to do. I don’t have any expectation of doing any videos but could always email photos of my not very impressive efforts 🤣.

Nicer than a lot of newer class b vans. Adding a pop up would be big. I would have left generator for more versatility. An entertainment system , and if possible , tankless hot water. A nice open floor plan ahead if it’s time. Redone with today’s technology would be better than the Travato
Well hello I enjoyed your video I'm considering purchasing one myself right now here in Canada what did you use for the tail lights I know you said you changed them out it looks very neat and thank you for showing your video and your modifications
The tail lights were sourced from other vehicles that were readily available. For instance, on my Rialta, they were from a Ford Ranger pick up. It just depends on what year your rig is. :)

I used to love the Rialta when it was being produced. Your mods are really great - I especially liked ditching the generator for solar and battery. The only mod I wouldn't have done is pulling the AC (we're in FL, AC is a must!), but otherwise, top notch!
Yeah, the way I travel I don’t like to use a generator, and I never have hookups, so the AC is just something heavy to carry around. I just like to follow the nice weather :)
I love that it's gravity fill water tank!!! So much better than mine. Is it difficult to reach the valves to release grey and black tank? Haha on propane stove. I caught that. I love that work space area. Would you leave it out all the time if you worked full time? Well I guess I got my answer on the desk space. lol Too funny!
The valves are maybe a little difficult since they are a bit tucked underneath, but probably no worse than the box contraption the Aktiv has for the grey hose, though. The work area is definitely nice, and placement right by the window was good planning on Winnebago’s part.
I definitely would like to have one of this Amazing opportunities to own a beautiful Rialta.

You put lots of sweat and love into this baby. I have a 05 HD and I’m worried on how to apply any upgrades. All original on mine, but works well so far. where did you get the shades from?
The blinds are residential blackout cellular shades from Home Depot. It took a little doing but they work out well. :)

What is max height allowance for someone to walk around comfortably inside?
Are these Rialta’s designed for shorter people?
The general height inside is about 5’10”. The skylight by the galley has a few extra inches, but other than that you’ll be bending over a bit.

Great video. I am looking at an 03 right now. Did you have to add an exterior cooler on your transmission?
I changed the fluid and filter - did not put on a cooler, but it is highly recommended (as is a Scangauge with the custom Rialta programming.)

I see in your other videos that you sold this RV. May I ask why you decided to go to a sprinter?
After seeing how I actually used my previous two rigs, I wanted to do a custom build designed for the way I travel.
I have a 2004 22qd and like the iceco swap that you did. And also the elimination of generator to lithium upgrade. Can you tell me any info on these so I might be able to do these upgrades. Thanks in advance.

Saw your review a bit ago and was interested by how modular it all is. This week I see a Craigslist for a 2000 QD for $26,000. If only it wasn't Craigslist... I'm just a bit leery. A van like these would work well with my hammock camping setup.
Craigslist can be tricky. If it’s not in your area where you can see it in person (or have a friend look at it for you) then you really have to be cautious. At least the pricing is legit - if they were asking $12K for it then I’d say run far away. Maybe worth contacting them, perhaps they’d do a video call with you.

I wouldn’t recommend the one I got, it was a very basic android headunit and it wasn’t the best performing unit in the world. If I did it again, I’d get an Alpine Halo series even though it’s substantially more expensive. It’s single DIN, and there aren’t many options for larger screens with single.
That was really smart changing out the old Fridge. I've been looking for a Class B RV, I didn't even know VW offered one, I like this. Can you give me a general range what these old rigs go for? Where is the best place to find one?

The best place to start is the Rialta Owners Group of America on Facebook. They are cool rigs, made by Winnebago for about 10 years. Depending on year, mileage and condition, they range $15K-$40K.
I just found out a relative has one of these that got driven for one summer, sat in their backyard for years and has been in storage forever. I am working on convincing them to let me get it up and running again. I would totally get rid of the generator and put in lithium batteries, and I like some of your upgrades too! It is a 2000 with this floorplan. What tires are you using? I figured in something that has sat this long that will be one of the first things to replace.
Absolutely, a new set of tires was the first thing I did too. There are only a few options for tires that fit, that are also the right weight rating. I believe the ones I got are no longer available.
I wanted to ask where did you put your solar panels?
Maybe you can help me out the generator on mine doesn’t work but I can get it replaced but I’m not sure how loud a gasoline generator’s gonna be with my head above it so I was thinking I would get the Jacari 3000 and I could just plug into that and use solar from that to you. Think that’s a good idea?
My rig had a single 65 watt panel on the roof behind the air conditioner when I bought it. When I did my lithium upgrades, I tied into the existing charging circuit, which charges the house batteries while the van is running. Jackery has portable solar panels, the downside being that you have to be stationary and put them out to charge. Otherwise you could mount a larger panel on the roof. Your usage would determine if that is going to charge fast enough. Generally speaking, I’m not a fan of gas generators although they can be useful. I tend to be a very low power user in the first place so I am usually able to get away with running everything off batteries and solar panels.
Looks great! Could you link the android head unit you use? Are you happy with it?
This particular one isn’t available anymore but to be honest, I wouldn’t be comfortable recommending it if it were. Not that it’s horrible, but it’s not great either and really, it’s only good for using as an apple CarPlay display.
Sweet rig. I've heard the black and grey water both dump into the same tank. Is that true? Also the headroom is supposedly a bit low. I'm not being critical but I'm thinking about buying one and want to know what I'm getting into.
So, the Rialta is a little different in that they gray water tank is only fed by the galley sink. The black tank services the entire bathroom - so the toilet, the sink AND the shower all feeds into the black tank. And unfortunately, it's not huge so you just have to manage your usage.
Interior height can definitely be an issue if you're over about 5'11". It does have the benefit of having a lower profile though, so you generally aren't limited by things like tunnels or low trees. :)
Hi! A few questions >
1. What were the blackout shades you put in? I guess they are held flush by a magnet? Were you happy with them, or would you get something else?
2. The lithium battery you put in, is it only charged by solar and the dc to dc charger? What did it power vs. the coach batteries?
3. Why did you sell the rialta for a sprinter? Was it just too big? Did the Sprinter have 4x4?

I’ll take them one at a time:
1. The shades were custom cut cellular blackouts from Home Depot! I did attach cabinet magnet sets on the back of them to hold them in place. I loved them.
2. The lithium was charged by (1) indirect charging from the stock coach batteries (which are charged by the van’s alternator) via a DC to DC converter. In addition to that, I had installed a small solar panel and solar charger as well.
3. Ultimately, I just wanted to do my own custom build. I bought the Rialta because at the time, I wasn’t able to find a good donor Sprinter and I figured the Rialta was a good project. Plus, I was always enamored with them. :)

Also, the lithium powered everything that the coach batteries did - I inserted it in between the fuse box and the original coach batteries. Then I would manually turn on the DC/DC converter to charge the lithium if the solar wasn’t able to keep up.
very nice upgrades... winnebago would take some pointers from you and reintroduce this coach even if they have to use a different chassis.
Someone just did that as a custom! An owner put the house portion onto a Ford Explorer!

Hello, we own a 2004 Rialta and the side window won't open, do you know if the turning knob can be replaced with a universal one since I am not able to find the original knob anywhere. Thanks
If the knob is just stripped out, you might be able to find something that fits it but it may be a challenge. I’d test it by removing the knob and gently rotating it with pliers just to make sure the mechanism still works. If you have the louvre style window, maybe gently push on the bottom of the panel to help it along and make sure it’s not stuck.
If it doesn’t move easily, don’t force it as the linkage might be bound up somewhere.

We are currently looking for a Rialta ourselves, my husband is 6ft tall, so just wondering how comfortable it is for you to move around inside, &/or how tall you are~ if I might ask? Sure appreciate you sharing your revisions & upgrades~ we've some of the same thoughts/ideas. I’m about 5’9” and am pretty adept at whacking my head on things :) I would say the low ceiling and subsequently lower AC controls were the biggest issue.
@@TravelingSolo Which makes sense, thanks so much for that. *My husband just informed me that he's actually 5'10.5 now~ double knee replacement last summer, plus normal age/shrinkage I suppose. He spent 34 yrs w/USCG, lots of tight spaces on boats, so he'll likely be fine~ I'm the clumsy one, but hey~ we humans tend to adapt quickly =) Thx again~ Sam
Just a quick question - what about integrating a solar generator like a jackery 1500 with 4 100 watt solar panels as a power source . Don’t know all the ins and outs of electricity but seems like there is away to make it work?

If you have the room to store them, you could probably make it work. In my case, I needed an inverter with a terminal block so I could light up all of the existing wiring.
I know some van lifers have wired rudimentary power systems into their vans by plugging into one of the outlets on a Jackery, but it really depends on how hard you will push it.
is there really any difference in what a jackery "solar generator" is than what he has installed? It appears a Jackers is simply solar panels + controller + batteries + inverter. The only difference I see is that Jackery has packaged it all together vs what he has assembled and installed here. What am I missing?
So, to use the toilet you have to pull the whole thing out?
Not exactly…it can be used when not extended, it’s just a small space. For a solo traveler it would likely be used with the door open. That said, pulling out the extension is a very quick process.
Is it for sale?
This is my idea of what a motorhome should be. It's small enough that anyone with a standard (non-commercial) driver's license can drive it, but two adults could travel comfortably in it while touring the country.
Interestingly enough, a CDL isn’t required for motorhomes under 26,000 pounds. I always thought that was a little strange, as I see some of these behemoths cruising down the road lol
@@TravelingSolo Right? You'd think they would be. I've seen Class A diesel pushers that look like tour buses. I've nothing against Class A diesel pusher motorhomes, but why does it have to be up to 50ft in length, 20-25ft. tall, and weigh more than 25,000lbs? The most I'd be willing to drive is 30ft in length, 10ft tall, and weigh between 10k and 15,000lbs.
Curious on the battery. 300ah only gives you about 3.5kw of power, vs the generator that could give constant power for a longer time. What was your decision to remove the generator, and how much of the stored power in the battery do you regularly use?
That’s sort of a long answer. The generator itself was original to the rig and parts are difficult to come by, which made it a liability. It was also loud, lived right under the bed area, and in many cases could not be used in the areas I visit anyway. I’m a fairly light power user to begin with and since I removed the AC unit, the only high draw items in the van are the microwave (which is used for a few minutes at a time) and the water heater (which will also heat water using the engine.) Otherwise, everything else in the rig is efficient 12v (LED lighting, compressor fridge, MaxxFan, etc.) Under normal circumstances, with just the fridge and gas detector running, I draw less than 40 watts and with good sun on the solar panel, even less.
It really comes down to how you use things. I just naturally conserve everything so this is more usable for my style of travel.
@@TravelingSolo , I would suggest getting an instant water heater to use instead of a tank water heater. That way you're only heating the water you are using. Only issue would be if your inverter is not large enough; they are a pretty hefty draw, albeit for a short time. Add more solar panels!
@Electric Boats and Cars My existing water heater only draws about 1100 W, but also has a heat exchanger with the engine cooling system. I will rarely have to run it in electric mode to begin with. :)
The short answer is, I just don’t use hot water enough to justify the trouble.

It’s located underneath the steering wheel on the bottom of the column. Be careful, it can get pushed in easily with too much pressure.
Does the front passenger seat spin around?
It does, with a little fiddling. The armrests get in the way a bit, but it’s doable. They do come off fairly easily, so that’s an option.
How long is it can some one 6'3 sleep there ?
If you’re alone and sleep at an angle, you could probably be ok, but it’s not very wide. Thats one of the common compromises in the smaller rigs - easy to drive and park, but maybe not quite as much room as you’d like.
Is 25k good for a Winnebago Vw Rialta with 69k miles clean in and out
Sorry for the late response! It really is a "maybe" answer, though. The obvious weak points to examine are (a) rust, and more importantly, (b) the status of the transmission. If the trans is original, you'll need to know if it's been serviced regularly (and properly!) If it's been replaced, then you'd definitely want to know when and by whom.
It also may depend on what year it is, as there were some significant changes from the '90s to the '00s models.
what's the average fuel milage on one of these.
Generally, you can expect something in the 18-26mpg range depending on terrain and driving style. I saw 24mpg at 75-80mph on I-40 from Vegas to flagstaff.

How many feet tall is it from floor to ceiling
The majority of the van is pretty short, at about 5’10” clearance. There are a couple places where it has a 6’2” clearance but if you’re moving around, taller people will have to bend down a bit.

The height is about 5’10” except for the entry and inside the skylight (and when standing in the shower pan) where it is about 6’2”. But generally, taller owners will have to bend over a bit when moving around.

They are coming! Range and running all the equipment is still a bit of a challenge, but they are being worked on. :)

Not really. This particular rig (and many other class B’s) at 21 feet is about the length of a full size 4-door pickup and can still park in a normal Walmart parking space.

Most class B’s and small C’s have low ground clearance, whether due to generators or under mounted batteries among other things. That said, these rigs generally aren’t being driven where ground clearance matters. But this potential limitation is also offset by the ability to park in a regular parking space, or go through tunnels that other rigs can’t clear.
