This single sketch alone is responsible for so many of today's comedians, Conan O'Brian and Billy Crystal amongst others. Howard T. Morris was so brilliant at the art of improvising. He was classically trained but his true gift was making people forget there problems for a short while and making them just feel good from laughter. Howard T. When Sid jumps up and desperately tries to escape the show was a spur-of-the-moment improv by Caesar that nobody was expecting. One of the funniest sketches in TV history.
As soon as I heard Carl Reiner has passed, I had to come watch this sketch again. Comedy gold even 63 years later. RIP Mr Reiner. Thanks for all the laughs over the years.

It still made me laugh just as hard as it did when I saw this sketch fresh the night it aired. I'm 77 years old and it brought back great memories for me.
First time I ever saw this sketch. My mother and I would watch 'This is Your Life' every week so I could really appreciate this sketch. I laughed so hard that I cried. Pure genius.
My Uncle Howie Morris. Always so nice, and funny to be around. He did the cartoon voices of Jughead, Adam Ant, and the ground hog in the Disney Winney The Poo..
Classic slapstick comedy! Laughed so hard it hurt! Sid and Howard, not to mention Carl were legends. So glad that we have You tube in order to see all this talent in action!

One of the features of Sid Caesar's performances was the burning intensity of the man. Everything he did came from somewhere real, and sometimes a sense of desperation. When you can bring those qualities to a comedy sketch and make people laugh till they cry, you've got something precious. You could almost say, sacred.

This is probably the funniest ten minutes in television history, and it happened almost at the outset. This sketch served as the endpiece for the 1973 theatrical compilation "Ten from Your Show of Shows," which was first broadcast on TV several years later. It included other classic sketches such as "The Clock" and "The German General." In April 1967, the four joined together for what was essentially a final installment of Your Show of Shows. It won two Emmys and was nominated for a third. Thanks, Sid. Thanks, Carl. Thanks, Imogene. Thanks, Howie.
I saw ten from your show of shows when it came out in 73. I never knew I could laugh that hard. Tears. People in the theatre must have thought I was crazy. They were right

The funniest skit of all time. Live and in one take. SNL looks pathetic next to this stuff. Brilliant and clean comedy. Terrific ensemble cast too. The kindly fireman was Louis Nye. RIP to a funny actor, Hail Caesar!!!!!!!
Henry -thank you,I didn't recognize Louis Nye,another great(and underrated)comedian!!You're right-they proved that it was possible to be funny without being vulgar! Good to know that someone else appreciates the absolute classics!!
I totally agree with you!! The kindly fireman in the skit looked somewhat familiar and the name Louis Nye came to mind. Thanks for the confirmation. I watched this show as a kid in the '50s. If memory serves, The Show Of Shows was originally a 60 minute show which was later lengthened to 90 minutes.. As a kid, I was disappointed to hear that but the more I watched the more I came to appreciate the humor. I suppose the content was beyond my early youth and I matured. Thanks to TH-cam, I can recapture those great moments. Regards.
Rehdman6444 Did you notice that there was an actual audience member near where Sid Caesar was sitting trying to hide his face,as if he didn't want his boss, wife, etc.to know he was there that evening!Thank you for your very nice reply,Rehdman 6444!
willow11st I think that was Ernie Kovacs.
