You missed a critical piece of info when assessing the tanks. The Challenger has two hot-water boilers. Its crew can brew tea and heat soup at the same time. This is a slam-dunk for the Challenger.

The US has roughly 2,509 Abrams in various versions, with an additional 3,700 in storage.
Yeah upgrade means replacing the electronics and other systems. Not building a new tank. Same with the Leopard 2's of which Germany has around 3,600.
Fact is a new tank doesn't come around very often. Which is why everyone and their brother who had even a passing interest in takes freaked out about the T-14 Armata when it was introduced. Needless to say it wasn't that impressive to people who actually know anything about how tanks work. Everything on the T-14 was stuff the Russians had been developing since the late 90s. The semi-automatic version has a lower rate of fire than the select fire fully automatic capable version of the rifle. It's kind of the difference between a civilian AR-15's rate of fire and a M4 Carbine's rate of fire.
For reference the AR-15 has a rate of fire of up to 45 rounds per minute.
The M4 Carbine has a rate of fire of about 700 to 970 rounds per minute.
Hopefully everyone now understands the difference in rate of fire between a Semi-automatic rifle and a Select Fire battle rifle or carbine. One is capable of automatic fire . The other is not.
