It was stated in the interview. Howard Hawks is John Carpenter’s favorite director because he had made a great movie in every genre. This is the very reason why John Carpenter is my favorite director. Literally dominated my childhood growing up in the late 70’s and 80’s.
Apart from Fincher and Tarantino, Carpenter is a real joy to listen to when he talks about movies in general. He doesn't take himself too serious as a director, but he knows what he does is important. Real greatness.
That's true. I find him a nicer person than Tarantino though. John is the kind of person you could stop and say hello, telling how much he inspired you, if you said to Tarantino, I think he would just ignore.
Tarantino is an overrated fanboy . I'm surprised John Carpenter hasn't sued Tarantino over The Hateful Eight . A western version of John Carpenter's THE THING is a ripoff to me .
Look for videos of Carpenter doing Q&As at conventions . There's one where some stupid fanboy asked him a question about how horrible Escape From LA and he replied with John giving him the middle finger . There's quite a few on TH-cam
What he said about going from New York - L.A. is very interesting. Chicago is the big city in America that's fucked up now. Can you imagine what they can do if they made Escape from Chicago?
Yeah , but it's not California's fault . The whole country is suffering from blight . And the majority of homeless were never born and raised in California , they came from all over the country ,just like in the book The Grapes Of Wrath .
"Best directors?" ...let's see them put stuff out ...audience will decide ...those who know, will decide 🎬 ...Orson Welles as teacher ...Howard Hawks ...impressive
Should do part three. Escape from the Earth. Seriously though, John is the best. Love all his work and would rather a sequel to Prince of Darkness, or perhaps a refined reworking of the original.
I heard Snake Plissken was originally supposed to play the role that Ice Cube did in Ghosts of Mars. Snake was a prisoner instead and he bumps into a special forces team and they need to survive. That would have been even cooler.
Can't believe the pedigree of lecturers at USC...Hawks, Welles, Ford. I got the director of some piece of shit film that did nothing as my tutor at film school in London and my long-standing memory is that he tried to talk everyone out of pursuing film. American film students are truly blessed...
Having great teachers helps but... Tarantino was self taught. I mean are you going to blame the teachers when no one can really teach you how to do art. You have to do it yourself.
@@piratesmileprod6533 "Song of Songs" by Josh Appignanesi. My point is that the quality of American lecturers is far great than British. Obviously it is down to the person what they do with it.
2:00 John describing how locals were literally having to arm themselves due to the riotous situation in West Hollywood knowing what was to come following the Not Guilty outcome 😳
A criminally unappreciated sequel that's superior to its original!!! Why? It's more enjoyable for me :-) even though this edition came years after it's predecessor as well as age and experience,I still feel LA offered more of a black humor creepfest as to new York was more horror, especially the locations& decade.
no question the man is talented unfortunately I just wish Escape from L.A. would have been a heck of a lot better than what it was. I've always said it would be interesting if someone would come up with a worthwhile plot to do a sequel to 'Escape' again with Kurt Russell has an older Renegade I'm sure he could pull it off. I'd rather see that than a reboot.
Here's what he said to some fan that made a similar opinion of EFLA ....🖕 , that's what he did . It's on TH-cam . I actually like it , it's no Oscar winner but Snake is back .
Honestly, of his entire filmography, escape from LA is the weakest not for technical reasons but for the taste of unnecessary and too "deja vu" with the first one. I wish he had developed the Thing sequel instead. It's too late now :(

I love watching Carpenter interviews: you know immediately he is a real filmaker. He is confident and knows his stuff. Pure auteur!
John Carpenter is one of the greatest directors of all time .
And most underrated.
The Carpenter-Russell “partnership” is a great thing.
Up there with De Niro-Scorsese and Kurosawa-Mifune
@@2cool4fluoride touché!
Best reason to buy the DVDs of the movies they did together are the best . I love the commentaries they've done .

John is an inspiration to me. He's a philosopher as well as director-writer musician. I have nothing but admiration for him.

@@BruceStephanYou’d respect that, huh?
Not only John been great in this. The interviewer was very serious aswell. I liked this interview alot.
Just a straight up legend
I wish this interview was longer. Hearing Carpenter talk about films is a lecture itself.
I wish we got more of John, just a cool guy with amazing passion
A brilliant man. A true master of his craft. Nice that he put a good word in for Tarantino, too.
Carpenter is just awesome, so sharp and cool.
Happy Birthday to John Carpenter!
He has made some classic movies
Love carpenter. He's one of the greats, for sure
i could listen to john carpenter talk all-day, the man is amazing.

John Carpenter is a genuine American maverick. He’s the real deal and he spent most of his career not getting his due.
Great interview. Thanks for posting.
C'mom JC.. You got one more good one in ya! You're one of the last of the greats that came outta the 70s
this might be one of his best interviews. he seems into it, and the host did a great job. i know this is old but great find for me lol.
The Master
The Thing is hands down my favorite movie.
awesome, thanks for posting.
My favorite director ever. There are some that are close. But there are none that are better.
Wow, he had classes with Orson Wells, Hitchcock, Howard Hawkes, etc etc, wow.
All his movies classic. Memoirs of an Invisible man and Ghosts of Mars; yeah EVEN THOSE
this is priceless
A great filmmaker who caught the American Zeitgeist.
all ill remember is john carpenter and quentin tarantino are friends..
There aren't many people in the industry who know the craft, like John says he recommends people learn every aspect of filmmaking, who does that now.
He was right about those films 🎥 ❤They live 🦎
What he said about going from New York - L.A. is very interesting. Chicago is the big city in America that's fucked up now. Can you imagine what they can do if they made Escape from Chicago?
and NOW LA really is a place to escape!
Yes true dystopian nightmare.

Very good interview but too short man! Too short

John carpenter, clive barker and stephen king should all sit in a room and discuss a movie. With Kurt russell of course.
Not surprising that Hawks is Carpenters favorite director considering he remade 2 of his pictures (Rio Bravo and The Thing from Another World)
I want to make John Carpenter pancakes and put my elbows on the table, gawking at anecdotes.

True. That’d would’ve been better. Still quite like Ghosts of Mars though.

The “academic” route is only one way, everybody makes their own path.
What was his little piece of shit film called?

It was OK but I was disappointed that it wasn't dark and gritty. Just too campy. That worked in BTILC but not with a post-apocalypse story like that.

I think I THINK he’s gonna be right about that Tarantino character.

You should stop smoking john..bit of a cough there.
Escape from LA was garbage. Escape from New York is my second favorite Carpenter film behind THE THING. Carpenter's last good film was THEY LIVE.
Carpenter was only 50 then. Looks 60.
Dreadful interviewer
